Matt couldn't see, but he had superhuman senses.
He built an image in his mind and "saw" the levitation that defied all reason.
He grew increasingly curious about John's identity. Was he really a magician?
As a lawyer, Matt leaned toward science, but his own intelligence told him that nothing in this world was impossible.
Gripped by fear, the priest couldn't hide anything from John.
"We wanted to replace him and become the rulers of this world's underworld!"
The priest spilled everything at once, trembling uncontrollably.
That terror struck straight at the soul. It was a frightening ability.
"Someone at the High Table was unhappy with how he did things. That person joined forces with us to make the attack!"
He revealed everything. Besides the Ten Rings, others were involved.
As for who that person at the High Table was, he didn't know.
John released his grip, and the priest fell.
"The High Table?" John sank into thought.
The High Table consisted of the original twelve Underworld Forces his dad had brought together when he founded the Underground Alliance.
The High Table they formed held supreme authority over the entire Underground Alliance.
Its member organizations operated in different countries, and the alliance had made them stronger.
It could arguably be called the most powerful organization among the Underworld Forces in the world.
This alliance valued rules. If someone wanted his dad dead, they had probably already prepared to become its next leader.
"I've told you everything I know." The priest lay prostrate on the floor.
They were a terrorist organization, but the group here was merely a team that had infiltrated the area.
They had once kidnapped Tony Stark to make weapons for them. Unfortunately for them, Tony had hammered out a suit of Iron Man Armor and escaped.
Still, that showed just how bold and powerful they were.
Tony's kidnapping had even brought in the military.
As terrorists, assassination clearly wasn't their specialty.
John raised his eyes. A wand slid into his left palm, and he gripped it and waved it.
"Imperio."
A flash of light passed, and the priest's expression turned blank.
"I'll let you go, but you'll have to do something for me."
John looked down at the priest, his expression cold. "Go back and take care of the mastermind for me."
He whispered in the priest's ear, "Tell him Wick sends his regards."
A gold coin dropped into the priest's pocket, and John lightly patted his chest.
"Go. Get back to his side by any means necessary and deliver my message."
The priest nodded numbly, as though John were his master.
The Imperius Curse.
An evil spell that could control people.
It had one flaw, however. Someone with a sufficiently strong will might break free of its control.
But that also depended on who had cast the Imperius Curse.
The priest had been broken by fear. In his current mental state, he couldn't possibly escape its control.
Like a walking corpse, he rose and headed outside.
Matt asked curiously, "What did you do to him?"
"A kind of magic," John said calmly. "It can make him do something for me."
"You really are a magician?"
"A wizard, to be precise."
John glanced at Matt. "Don't you think you'd be better off with a different combat outfit?"
Dressed entirely in black, with a felt cap covering his eyes, Matt said matter-of-factly, "This is more convenient."
"As far as I know, superheroes wear tights." John spread his hands. "Maybe you'd look more like Daredevil that way."
"That's them." Matt remained noncommittal as he tapped his cane against the floor. "How are we handling these people?"
"You're a good partner, Matt."
The fact that Matt still hadn't dwelled on his killing made John think he might be a decent partner.
"We leave them to the professionals, of course." John held out his hand. "Lend me your phone."
"You should buy one yourself." Matt found it absurd that John didn't have a phone.
He tossed his phone over, and it landed squarely in John's hand.
Although he was curious about John's identity, judging by his actions, he only targeted bad people.
"You're calling that group from earlier?" Matt assumed John meant the Cleaners.
John shook his head and said matter-of-factly, "No. For something like this, you call the police, of course."
He called the police station.
"Hello, I'm in Hell's Kitchen. I've discovered a group of terrorists armed with heavy weapons hiding in a church. There are ten of them. Oh, one left. You'd better get here quickly."
Matt listened expressionlessly as John made the call.
After hanging up, John tossed the phone back and said softly, "See? It's handled now."
"There's just one thing. The FBI will probably come too. I hope you can handle that for me."
John headed farther into the church. He couldn't tell whether the people who belonged here had been killed or whether the intruders had simply taken over.
He reached the confessional inside the church and blew the wooden booth apart with a flick of his wand.
Gold was exposed on the floor. He casually picked up a bar and weighed it in his hand.
"There's probably over a hundred million worth of gold here. Who knows whether it belongs to the local gangs?"
Smiling, he tossed a bar to Matt. "How about we split it?"
Matt caught the gold bar flying toward him. That single bar weighed about half a kilogram and was worth a considerable amount.
It weighed heavily in his palm.
Without hesitation, he tossed it back to John.
John caught it and said regretfully, "Three bars would buy your law firm."
"Thanks for the offer."
Matt remained unmoved. If he were after money, he wouldn't have chosen this path.
Ever since childhood, he had known that rules were needed to restrain people's behavior.
If he accepted this wealth, he would be no different from the thugs of Hell's Kitchen.
Seeing that he didn't want it, John grinned, stood up, and casually tossed the bar down.
The gold bars clinked sharply together. John raised his wand and gave it a casual wave.
The gold jumped into his pocket, and before long, all of it was inside.
Walking toward Matt, John said, "We need to find somewhere to pay you."
"I won't use this money either, but there's a good place for it."
The two left the church. The Ten Rings members inside wouldn't be waking up anytime soon.
Outside, Ferdinand was anxious and restless.
When he saw John and Matt emerge, he breathed a sigh of relief and hurried out to open the car door.
John accepted without protest and got into the car.
"To your law firm?"
"No need." Matt got in and said evenly, "I don't want anyone else dragged into this."
"You make me sound far too sinister." John took a gold bar from his pocket and tossed it onto the front passenger seat.
A flash caught Ferdinand's eye, and he glanced over.
The sight of the gleaming gold made his foot slip on the pedal, nearly sending the car into a streetlamp.
"Th-this..." He couldn't get the words out.
"Your pay for today," John said casually.
Ferdinand had never imagined he would actually be paid today.
"You drove me here, so I pay you," John said nonchalantly. "An equal exchange."
Watching Ferdinand pick up the gold as though it were a priceless treasure, John urged him, "Unless you want the police to treat you as a suspect, you'd better start driving."
"Oh, right away. Hold on tight, boss." Ferdinand nodded hastily.
He stepped on the accelerator.
After they left, police cars headed to the church.
Two FBI agents led the way.
"This is the place." An agent walked in, took one look at the nine people hanging there, then looked at the weapons lying quietly on the floor.
The police officers sucked in sharp breaths. There was even a rocket launcher.
If the police had stumbled upon them unprepared, that firepower would have been enough to slaughter them.
"Who did this?" The agent's brow furrowed.
They had just received a call about Hell Paradise, only to find it completely deserted.
Now terrorists had been strung up here.
An entire underworld organization had vanished, while a group of terrorists had suddenly appeared elsewhere.
These events were full of mysteries, leaving them baffled.
"John Wick has entered Hell's Kitchen." The agent recalled the tip he had received.
Coincidentally, just after the FBI learned that Hell Paradise was connected to the attack on Wick, everyone there had disappeared.
And then there was the tip.
Could John Wick have done this to these people?
Wick's son-the person they knew next to nothing about.
They had even met him at the police station earlier that day.
In fact, before today, they had thought Wick's son was a bookworm who never went outside.
Now it seemed the FBI had been completely wrong.
"All his records are in the United Kingdom. This is going to be tricky."
While the FBI was brainstorming, John had already returned home.
Matt had come back with him.
Ferdinand had now become John's dedicated chauffeur in every sense.
He was sitting in the car, hugging the gold and kissing it.
Who knew whether those gangsters had disinfected the gold while handling it?
Hopefully, he wouldn't catch anything.
"You're finally back, John Wick."
In the Wick family's living room, a bald head faced away from him.
Nick Fury.
