Background / History

From Street Thug to Chauffeur

Ferdinand initially made money through petty street intimidation. Although he could frighten children elsewhere, he was terrified of Hell’s Kitchen. When he drove John there, he tried to leave immediately after dropping him off, but John ordered him to wait—and startled him by knowing his name despite never having been told it 14.

While waiting, Ferdinand was robbed of sixteen dollars and twenty cents, beaten, and nearly deprived of his pickup. Matt Murdock defeated the robbers, and John returned Ferdinand’s keys. His bleeding forehead subsequently healed without him understanding how. He then drove Matt home to change and discovered that the lawyer was Daredevil before taking both men to a church 18.

After the church operation, John paid him with a gold bar. The unexpected reward transformed Ferdinand’s attitude toward him. Ferdinand pawned the gold, bought an expensive suit, and approached John about becoming his regular driver. John hired him for ten thousand a month, without meals or lodging, on the condition that he remain reachable and ready to work at all hours 19 20 21.

Early Work for John

Ferdinand drove John to the New York Continental Hotel and carried the heavy bag of gold used for John’s bounty announcement. Later that night, he drove through the Stark Expo emergency and took John to the New York Ecological Park. Although he promised to keep the sports car unscratched, flying glass from an explosion pierced its roof and embedded itself in the driver’s seat 21 22.

Believing the damage had cost him his job, Ferdinand failed to report for work the next day. John called him to collect him from outside the police station and did not punish him for the damaged car. Ferdinand subsequently accompanied John and Ivan Vanko to Taran Industries, where he was astonished by the Wick family’s ownership stake and briefly held Ivan’s reactor after John tossed it to him 25 26.

Ferdinand later asked John to make him a manager. John dismissed the request as daydreaming and gave him two hundred dollars to buy a better pillow 28.

Roman and the Death Race

While John was in New Mexico, Ferdinand took an employer-owned luxury car home and showed it off to his family and neighbors. He refused Roman’s request to borrow it for the Brooklyn Street Racing Championship, fearing damage and dismissal. Roman nevertheless stole the keys from Ferdinand’s room 35.

When John returned, Ferdinand admitted what had happened. He drove John and Foggy Nelson to his family home, where they learned that Roman had entered the Death Race in Hell’s Kitchen. Ferdinand accompanied them to Satan’s Mansion and later carried the stolen contraband John used to confront Corey. He witnessed John command Corey’s pet snake to kill its owner 41 42 43 44.

Inside Corey’s hidden room, Ferdinand resisted taking more money than John authorized. John allowed him to collect Roman’s two-hundred-thousand-dollar race prize, praising his growing professionalism. Ferdinand also interrupted Roman’s fight with Daredevil, preventing his brother from charging into a concealed stun baton. The prize money ultimately went to John as compensation for damage to the borrowed car 45.

Assassination Attempt and Further Education

During a drive through Brooklyn and Manhattan, Ferdinand failed to notice a silver car following them until John pointed it out. Its occupants fired a rocket at their luxury car. John escaped with Ferdinand through Apparition before the attackers finished shooting up the wreck. The transportation left Ferdinand vomiting and unable to remember how he had escaped; John sent him home in a taxi 47 48.

John encouraged Ferdinand to read and made clear that becoming a manager required improving his education. When given half a month off, Ferdinand began visiting a library rather than simply returning to his former lifestyle. His younger brother found the change surprising, while his mother began trying to improve her own habits in response 47 50.

At the New York Public Library, Ferdinand became engrossed in a translated Eastern novel, but struggled to stay awake while reading a financial-management book. He attempted to rouse himself by inhaling pepper spray and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Alarmed by the expense of medical care, he left in his pickup, abandoning Roman. Shortly afterward, while trying unsuccessfully to telephone John as his leave approached its end, he was attacked at his truck’s window and knocked unconscious 59.

Kidnapping by Dax

Ferdinand awoke blindfolded, gagged, and bound to a chair. Initially believing he had been kidnapped for money, he offered the five hundred dollars in his pocket and pleaded to be released. His captor instead demanded information about John and the means by which he had disappeared. After being forced to open his eyes at gunpoint, Ferdinand recognized the FBI agent Dax and briefly threatened to have his lawyer file a complaint 61.

Dax’s threats quickly silenced him. Ferdinand insisted that he was only a driver and had not seen John for two weeks. He ultimately refused to betray his employer, reasoning that Dax might kill him, whereas selling out John could endanger his entire family. John then called Ferdinand’s phone and ordered Dax to bring him to the Wick home. There, John recruited Dax to locate Shang-Chi, leaving Ferdinand bewildered that the man who had nearly beaten him to death had become one of their allies 61.

Continued Service and First Raise

After returning to driving duties, Ferdinand became familiar with John’s preferred destinations. When John redirected him to Stark Industries for an appointment, Ferdinand initially assumed his employer intended to kill Tony Stark to eliminate a competitor 65.

Ferdinand remained ready to work even during his family’s Christmas celebrations. When John telephoned, he immediately offered to collect him, but John had called only to wish him a merry Christmas 72.

His salary was still ten thousand a month when he overheard John raise Hattie’s pay to sixty thousand. Ferdinand lamented the disparity, only for John to say that Roman’s outstanding fifty-thousand-dollar debt would be deducted from his wages. Ferdinand promptly protested that he and Roman were not close 76.

After a year of service, John paid Ferdinand early and added three thousand to his monthly salary. Ferdinand initially feared that the payment meant he was being dismissed, then enthusiastically accepted it as a raise. John also granted him a week off, which again made him worry about losing his job until John responded in his usual brusque manner 89.

Chitauri Salvage and the Toomes Crew

After the Battle of New York, John assigned Ferdinand to oversee Taran Industries’ recovery of Chitauri weapons. His team worked in designated areas alongside Adrian Toomes’s independent cleanup crew. Adrian’s wife was Ferdinand’s distant cousin, and the two men already got along well 112.

When Damage Control invoked Administrative Order 396B to take over the cleanup and demand the alien salvage, Ferdinand called John and handed the phone to the white-haired woman directing the takeover. John identified Ferdinand as his representative and warned her not to obstruct Taran Industries. Her change in attitude reinforced Ferdinand’s appreciation of the influence attached to being John’s driver, though John immediately docked him two hundred dollars for an earlier careless remark 112.

Adrian then appealed to Ferdinand for help, explaining that he had mortgaged his house and could not afford to leave his wife and daughter without a home. Ferdinand proposed hiring Adrian’s entire crew, arguing that their expertise would fill a personnel shortage at Taran Industries. John approved and left Ferdinand to arrange the details. The crew became Taran personnel, and their wreckage became company property, saving Adrian’s livelihood 112.

Adrian’s wife subsequently thanked Ferdinand in person, an occasion described as the Pierce family’s proudest moment. Ferdinand later drove John from New York to Pym Technologies in San Francisco, spending a week on the road and gradually becoming numb to the road dust accumulating on the luxury car 116. After the trip, Roman washed the travel-worn vehicle but charged Ferdinand one hundred dollars 117.

Despite undertaking company-related assignments, Ferdinand was still explicitly John’s private driver rather than a formal Taran Industries employee at this stage. He had neither an employee badge nor an office and waited for John on a sofa in the company lobby 125.

Extremis Attacks and the Theater Explosion

While waiting at Taran Industries, Ferdinand encountered Savin accompanying Aldrich Killian. He looked down on Savin as a social parasite and briefly noticed an orange-red glow on his face, which he dismissed as a trick of his eyes. He then drove John to the Wick home while Savin followed them 125.

During the subsequent ambush in Hell’s Kitchen, Ferdinand traded insults and collisions with the driver of Savin’s blue car before Savin leaped onto his hood. John ordered Ferdinand to ram through the attackers. Although Ferdinand instinctively objected that killing people was illegal, he obeyed; the resulting crash knocked him unconscious while the Extremis-enhanced attackers survived 126.

John later woke him on a couch while dealing with a captive Extremis-enhanced woman. Ferdinand’s nose hurt, and he could not account for what had happened. John told him that he had crashed and instructed him to claim insurance compensation for the car 127.

Near Christmas, Ferdinand encountered Happy Hogan at a theater while Happy was investigating an exchange involving Extremis. Recognizing the orange-red glow of an enhanced soldier, Ferdinand warned Happy that he and John had previously encountered a man who survived being hit by a car and could regrow a severed hand. The pair tried to leave, but another Extremis soldier intercepted them. They punched him together and attempted to run, only to be thrown aside 132.

When a retired soldier’s Extremis treatment became unstable, Ferdinand dragged Happy behind a pillar and shouted for everyone to take cover. The ensuing explosion killed members of the crowd. Ferdinand and Happy survived but were injured 132.

Ferdinand’s injuries required hospitalization. His medical bills were fully covered, and he received a bonus worth three months’ wages. Afterward, he began training seriously and developed noticeably larger arms 151. He later recalled breaking bones and spending two weeks in the hospital while listing his service to John 171.

Rescues and Promotion to Security

When Peter Parker and May disappeared, Ferdinand collected John and drove according to the direction indicated by a magically guided drop of blood hung from the rearview mirror. By this point, he understood that John was a wizard. The trail brought them to the unfinished building where the captives were being held 151.

Ferdinand later drove John and Ariana home after Ariana’s rescue from Agnes. He questioned John’s explanation that Ariana was his sister because their appearances differed, but immediately accepted both her identity and her authority as another boss when John threatened a pay cut 165.

By the time John offered him a promotion, Ferdinand was much more composed than the petty thug he had once been. He wore a watch he had saved to buy and opened John’s car door without prompting 170. Ferdinand enthusiastically accepted the prospect of advancement, and John told him that the Security Department needed someone and that he could try the position 171. He subsequently became Taran Industries’ Security Chief, with his own office and security personnel responding to his instructions 371 377.

Liz’s Party and the Attack on Peter

As Security Chief, Ferdinand continued to see Adrian frequently at Taran Industries. Adrian asked him to attend Liz’s party and keep the boys away from her, lending him his car keys. Ferdinand arrived in a blue sports car, greeted Liz affectionately as his niece, and took over the party music from Flash 371.

During the party, Adrian informed him that Damage Control had been robbed. Ferdinand promised to investigate, then followed Peter outside, initially suspecting that the boy had stolen something. He instead encountered armed attackers carrying weapons from the batch he had seen at the salvage yard. Believing they might be trying to silence Adrian over the company’s investigation of black-market weapons, Ferdinand used the sports car to intervene and drove Peter away 373.

Peter began changing into his Spider-Man suit inside the moving car. Ferdinand saw the red-and-blue costume and continued driving while Peter used a cornering maneuver to leave the vehicle and confront the pursuing Flying Soldier 373.

Ferdinand subsequently crashed the sports car into the Flying Soldier, knocking him unconscious. After climbing out, he struck the attacker’s faceplate and hurt his hand. Peter removed the faceplate, revealing a green-skinned Skrull. Ferdinand answered the attacker’s ringing phone, cursed at the caller, and handed it to Peter when the man demanded Spider-Man. The caller, Lies, detonated a bomb concealed in the phone, but Peter’s Spider-Sense enabled him to evade it 374.

The Skrull then activated his weapons in a suicidal blast. Peter lunged toward Ferdinand, and both survived, though the blue sports car and the surrounding ground and walls were destroyed. After returning to the party, Ferdinand told Peter that John had acted as his godfather when confronting an abusive family on his behalf. Peter then left to pursue Lies 374.

Investigation of the Black-Market Weapons

The following day, Ferdinand still suffered from a sore nose caused by the car’s airbag and wore adhesive bandages over facial cuts from the phone bomb. At the salvage yard, Adrian explained that the weapons combined intense heat beams with Magic Crystals, but their materials could not sustain operation. Overheating caused them to explode. Ferdinand recognized the crystal Adrian handed him as a Magic Crystal 376.

When Peter later visited Taran Industries for information, Ferdinand brought him into his office but initially dismissed his involvement as a teenager’s overconfidence. Peter appealed to John’s role as his godfather, prompting Ferdinand to share the investigation’s findings. He had a security guard bring a sample weapon and explained that Magic Crystals originated in the Wizarding Kingdom and were held in the United States at Taran Industries and Damage Control. He also warned Peter that overloading the weapons caused them to explode 377.

Appearance

  • Build and complexion: A large Black man 18 22.
  • Hair: Bald; John repeatedly taps or looks at his head when correcting him 22 31.
  • Professional clothing: Purchases an expensive gray suit and wears a tie and sunglasses when seeking permanent employment 21.
  • Later wardrobe: By the Death Race incident, the expensive suit generally remains in his wardrobe rather than being worn regularly 42.
  • Muscular development: After his hospitalization, his arms become noticeably larger through training. He rolls up his short sleeves to display his muscles 151.
  • Watch: Wears a watch he saved up to buy as his circumstances improve 170.
  • Security Chief attire: By his time as Security Chief, his suits fit his more mature professional bearing. At Liz’s party, he wears a flashy leopard-print suit, a thick gold chain, and sunglasses despite the darkness 371.
  • Temporary injuries: After the Skrull attack, he has a sore nose from the airbag and bandaged facial cuts from the phone bomb’s shrapnel 374 376.

Personality

Ferdinand is ambitious, status-conscious, and eager to impress. He enjoys the admiration that comes with driving luxury cars and spends much of his initial gold payment showing off to his former underlings. His desire for a managerial position reflects his hope of entering the middle class rather than remaining a street thug 21 28 35 42.

His loyalty to John combines financial opportunity with fear. He frequently worries that damaged or missing cars will cost him his job, and memories of John piercing his hand make him especially cautious around his employer. Even after witnessing John’s manipulation of the Viper Gang, he defends staying with him because he sees the job as his chance to escape his old life 25 41 42 43 44.

Over time, Ferdinand becomes more willing to exercise restraint. In Corey’s hidden room, he takes only the authorized prize money despite wanting more, choosing his future employment over immediate wealth. He later follows John’s advice to pursue reading and education 45 50.

His loyalty survives direct interrogation by Dax, though his refusal to betray John is also shaped by fear for his family’s safety 61. He remains conscientious about his driving duties, offering to work during Christmas, yet is so accustomed to John’s brusque treatment that unexpected kindness, an early payment, or additional leave makes him suspect dismissal 72 89.

Ferdinand becomes increasingly capable of taking initiative. His proposal to recruit Adrian’s crew balances concern for his relatives with an argument about the company’s staffing needs. His later composure and promotion mark a substantial departure from his former street behavior 112 170 171 371.

He retains a flashy, teasing manner and a tendency toward insults and road rage. Nevertheless, he acts protectively in emergencies, dragging Happy to cover during the theater explosion and intervening when Peter is attacked outside Liz’s party 126 132 371 373. As Security Chief, he can also be dismissive of Peter’s superhero role because of his age, although invoking John’s concern for Peter persuades him to share useful intelligence 377.
