No one currently knew where the Soul Stone was.
Gamora had entrusted that secret to John, and he was a Wizard. If Thanos missed this opportunity, he might never find this Wizard again in his lifetime.

John chanted an ancient incantation.
Lightning flashed and thunder roared. Thor summoned a thunderbolt that crashed down, forcing Thanos to bend at the waist.
Steve swung his shield, only for Thanos to slap him away.
Bucky swung his vibranium arm, smashing a
