Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Banished and stripped of divine power | 32 33 | Retains combat experience and physical strength sufficient to defeat trained S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, but cannot lift Mjolnir. |
| Worthiness regained | 37 38 | Offers his life to protect innocent people. Odin’s enchantment recognizes his willingness to sacrifice himself, and Mjolnir responds to his call. John revives him with magic and electrical stimulation. |
| Divine power restored | 38 39 | Travels to the crater to reclaim Mjolnir and returns wearing his armor. Regains lightning attacks, hammer-assisted flight, and storm manipulation, overwhelming the Destroyer. |
| Restored strength demonstrated against Iron Man | 94 | Crushes the titanium-alloy armor on Tony’s arm with his bare hand. His lightning unexpectedly charges Tony’s armor to 400% power rather than disabling it. |
| Nine Realms campaign | 177 | Leads Asgardian forces against rebellions and shatters a massive armored stone opponent with one blow from Mjolnir. |
| Rapid growth during the campaign against Ragnarok | 403 423 | Defeats Surtur and takes his crown. John observes that Thor’s strength is improving rapidly rather than merely following the normal Asgardian pattern of increasing with age. |
| Loss of Mjolnir | 424 | Hela crushes his hammer, depriving him of his familiar weapon. Thor is subsequently stranded on Sakaar and forced into arena combat. |
| Hammer-independent mastery of thunder | 427 430 | Accepts that he is the God of Thunder rather than the God of Hammers. Months of arena combat deepen his control of his innate power; he defeats the Red War God barehanded with lightning-enhanced strikes and earns freedom through an unprecedented hundred-win streak. |
| Full-power battle with Hela | 438 439 | Fights with Gungnir and then his fists, displaying white lightning in his eyes and summoning a massive bolt against the Golden Palace. His strength briefly draws Asgard’s favor, but Hela’s support from Asgard prevents him from defeating her. |
| Stormbreaker forged | 518 | Restarts Nidavellir’s neutron star and forges Stormbreaker with Eitri. The new weapon allows him to summon the Bifrost independently of Asgard’s former transport infrastructure. |
| Mature God King | 536 | Spars with Odyssey, leaving the new ruler visibly strained while showing little strain himself. His increased strength and maturity are attributed to the setbacks he has endured. |
Background / History
As a child, Thor admired legends of strength and enjoyed hearing Odin recount his battles. He grew into a warrior, while his father wanted him to become a king who would defend his country and protect its people 38.
When Jotunheim intruded during his coronation, Thor defied Odin’s orders and sought to destroy the Frost Giants’ realm without first understanding the circumstances. Banished to Midgard and stripped of divine power, he eventually recognized this decision as reckless and irresponsible 32 37.
Thor fought numerous wars for Odin and maintained peace by suppressing rebellions throughout the Nine Realms. After unrest spread during the period in which Asgard’s Bifrost was damaged, Odin assigned him to pacify the realms and demonstrate his suitability as the next king 177 426.
Odin raised Thor with compassion and a sense of royal responsibility while concealing his earlier career as a conqueror. Thor and Loki did not know that they had an elder sister, Hela, or that she had served as Odin’s executioner before being banished with her army. Learning this history forced Thor to reconcile his loving father with the ruler remembered by other realms 401 427 438.
Following the conflict with Hela and Surtur, Thor led the displaced Asgardians through space. He accepted leaving the old territory to Hela, regarding the people aboard his ship—not the land itself—as the true Asgard. After Thanos killed half of the surviving population, the refugees settled in Norway, where Thor reunited with Frigga and Loki to rebuild their community 504 536 545.
Appearance
- Hair: Blond 32.
- Build: Tall and heavily muscular 32 39.
- Restored attire: Armor and a red cape, with Mjolnir in hand 38 39.
- During the crater raid: Wears a raincoat taken from a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and reaches the hammer soaked in rain and covered in mud 32.
- During arena training: His hair grows long and is subsequently cut short over the months he experiences on Sakaar 430.
- Eye injury: Hela destroys one of his eyes during their duel in the Golden Palace 438.
- Awakened power: White lightning fills his eyes when he unleashes his innate thunder power 430 438.
- Later divine attire: Can transform into his godly attire as lightning descends, preparing to fight with Stormbreaker 551.
Personality
Thor begins as an arrogant, impulsive warrior who considers Midgard weak. Mjolnir’s rejection forces him to confront his rashness, while John’s magic challenges his assumptions about humans. Believing himself permanently exiled, he accepts the prospect of living as a mortal with Jane and even prepares breakfast for her household 33 35 36.
His loyalty to Loki initially makes him easy to deceive: he refuses to suspect that his brother would lie about Odin’s death. Nevertheless, his experiences on Earth make him more restrained and protective. He prevents his friends from attacking John, rejects Sif’s proposed heroic death, and offers his own life rather than let innocent people suffer for his family’s conflict 33 35 37.
Despite his rugged appearance and love of combat, Thor has good manners and is described as a gentleman. He enjoys drinking, the exchange of Christmas gifts, and companionship, but remains capable of setting personal pleasures aside for his duties as an Avenger 233 427.
His understanding of kingship develops into a firm refusal to involve civilians in his family’s disputes. After learning Hela’s history, he feels pity as well as resentment toward her and asks that she protect Asgard’s people if he dies. He abandons the wealth and prestige available to him on Sakaar to return to an uncertain confrontation, placing his subjects above his own safety 427 430.
By the time he rebuilds Asgard, Thor has become noticeably more humble. Rather than mocking Odyssey after their spar, he recognizes the younger ruler’s uncertainty and advises him to consider his people before starting wars. He would like to travel with the Guardians of the Galaxy, but postpones the journey until New Asgard is settled 536 545.
Abilities & Skills
Divine Power
Thor’s divine power exists within him rather than originating in Mjolnir. John interprets it as a manipulation of chaos particles comparable to wizard magic, with the hammer acting as a channel and amplifier 39.
- Produces lightning alongside attacks substantially stronger than those of Sif and the Warriors Three 39.
- Knocks the Destroyer away with a single hammer blow after regaining his power 39.
- Is unavailable during his banishment until he becomes worthy again 32 38.
- His strength derives from both Asgardian physiology and magic rather than being treated as an ordinary human superpower 229.
- Develops direct control over lightning without Mjolnir through repeated arena battles 430.
- Channels thunder into his fists strongly enough to tear through the Red War God’s otherwise weapon-resistant skin 430.
- Summons immense lightning strikes against Hela and the Golden Palace. His awakened power compensates for much of the strength lost with Mjolnir, though it does not overcome Hela while Asgard sustains her 438 439 507.
Storm Manipulation and Flight
Thor uses Mjolnir to fly and generate powerful weather effects 39.
- Summons dark clouds and a hurricane strong enough to lift the Destroyer into the air 39.
- Flies while carrying Jane to the Bifrost site 39.
- Drives Mjolnir against the Destroyer’s energy beam, forcing the blast back into its body and disabling it 39.
- Cannot return to Asgard by flight alone; during his initial return, he and his companions still require the Bifrost 39 40.
- Later summons the Bifrost through Stormbreaker, traveling from Nidavellir to Midgard and transporting himself, Frigga, and Loki from Vanaheim to rebuild Asgard 518 536.
Combat Training
Even without divine power, Thor remains a battle-hardened warrior capable of defeating numerous trained human opponents 32 33.
- Breaks through S.H.I.E.L.D.’s secured perimeter and fights his way to Mjolnir 32.
- Retains evasive instincts against the Destroyer, rolling away from attacks and using a discarded shield against rubble 37.
- Remains vulnerable while depowered: a single blow from the Destroyer leaves him unconscious and near death 37 38.
- Fights Iron Man across the air, cliffs, and woods, crushing part of Tony’s titanium-alloy armor with his bare hand 94.
- Shatters a giant armored stone combatant with a single hammer strike during the Nine Realms campaign 177.
- Wins a hundred consecutive arena battles on Sakaar, adapting to fighting without Mjolnir and defeating the Red War God barehanded 430.
- Wields Gungnir skillfully against Hela despite being unable to access its full power without Asgard’s recognition 438.
- Combines attacks with Valkyrie to delay Hela while the Asgardians evacuate 439.
- Splits a minotaur from Hell in two with one swing of Stormbreaker while protecting Norway 551.
Asgardian Physiology and Limitations
- Strength and resilience: His restored body can withstand exchanges with Iron Man and exert enough force to crush titanium alloy 94.
- Healing: Possesses Asgardian healing ability, though gem energy can inhibit it; his wounds remain troublesome after the Sokovia conflict 264.
- Long-term growth: Asgardians generally become stronger as they age. John nevertheless notes Thor’s unusually rapid improvement during his pursuit of Ragnarok 401 403.
- Magical intoxication: Can be overcome by sufficiently concentrated magical alcohol. John’s aged Stars drink makes him fall asleep despite his divine constitution 232.
- Sustenance: Even gods become weak without food, making the supplies aboard the refugee ship important to Thor’s people 504.
- Powerful opponents: His awakened thunder does not make him invincible. Hela defeats him while sustained by Asgard, and Thanos later overpowers him and his allies aboard their ship 438 439 504 507.
Practical Skills and Leadership
- Cooking: Makes breakfast for Jane, Selvig, and Daisy; regards cooking as an essential warrior’s skill 35.
- Evacuation: Prioritizes removing civilians when the Destroyer approaches Old Bridge Town 36.
- Command: Persuades his injured companions to withdraw, protect the humans, and return to Asgard to stop Loki 37.
- Military leadership: Leads Asgardian forces through the Nine Realms to quell unrest and arrest rebels 177.
- Instruction: Personally coaches Bertram in using his electrical powers and considers several of John’s students promising future warriors 233.
- Civilian protection: Seeks to move the Dark Elf conflict away from Asgard and later organizes the evacuation during Hela’s rule 191 437 439.
- Royal mentorship: Advises Odyssey that a good ruler does not start wars lightly and should think of his people 536.
- Reconstruction: Works to settle the surviving Asgardians in Norway and consults John about land, legal status, and a sustainable economy 537 545.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Mjolnir: A magical hammer bearing Odin’s worthiness enchantment. It channels and amplifies Thor’s divine power and contains enough power to grant a worthy mortal godlike abilities. It initially refuses Thor, then becomes usable after his self-sacrifice. Vision later demonstrates his worthiness by lifting it. Hela eventually crushes the hammer when she emerges from the Underworld 32 38 39 251 424.
- Asgardian armor and red cape: Reappear with Thor’s restored divine power. He later transforms into his godly attire through lightning while wielding Stormbreaker 38 39 551.
- Borrowed shield: Briefly uses a shield dropped by the Warriors Three to block debris during the Destroyer battle 37.
- Destroyer Armor: Gives the defeated armor to John as payment for their agreement. Although disabled in battle, it survives Thor’s full-power attack without lasting damage beyond the two pieces John cut away 39 49.
- Sakaar Control Disc: A coercive device fitted to him after his arrival on Sakaar, restricting his freedom and contributing to his frustration with arena combat 424 426.
- Arena hammer: Obtains a replacement hammer using arena points but sets it aside before facing the Red War God, recognizing that it cannot penetrate his opponent’s defenses 430.
- Gungnir: Odin’s divine spear and a symbol of Asgard’s throne. Thor uses it against Hela, but without Asgard’s recognition he cannot wield its full power; Hela eventually knocks it from his hands 438.
- Surtur’s crown: Brings it back after defeating Surtur. During the evacuation, Thor directs Loki to restore Surtur through the Eternal Flame to set Ragnarok in motion 439.
- Stormbreaker: An intelligent axe forged on Nidavellir with Eitri after Thor restarts the neutron star. Can summon the Bifrost. Thor is strongly attached to it and coaxes it into accepting a temporary loan to John in exchange for assistance with New Asgard’s land and legal status 518 536 537.
- Mobile phone: Obtains a phone with Valkyrie’s assistance to become more familiar with Midgard 543.
Relationships
- Odin — Father and king of Asgard. Banishes Thor and places the worthiness enchantment on Mjolnir; Thor ultimately begins to understand his distinction between a warrior and a responsible king. Odin later sends him to pacify the Nine Realms as preparation for succession. Thor defends Jane and apologizes for Odin’s hostility toward John. After Odin dies and passes to Valhalla, Thor learns the concealed history of his conquests and Hela’s banishment, but continues to value the compassion his father taught him 37 38 177 183 190 424 427 438.
- Frigga — Mother. Loki falsely claims that she has forbidden Thor’s return, deepening his despair. Her reverence for the Wizard King encourages Thor to address John respectfully. She survives the later conflicts, reunites with her sons in Vanaheim, and joins them in rebuilding Asgard 33 190 504 536.
- Loki — Younger brother. Exploits Thor’s trust with lies about Odin’s death and sends the Destroyer after him. Thor returns to Asgard intending to confront him. Loki continues to manipulate Thor, feigning remorse before stabbing and freezing him during the Chitauri invasion, and later impersonating Odin after faking his own death. Despite their conflicts, Loki worries about Thor’s planned duel with Hela, assists the evacuation, and risks attacking Thanos while Thor is being tortured. The brothers subsequently reunite and work with Frigga to rebuild Asgard 33 36 39 40 100 424 427 439 504 518 536.
- Jane Foster — Former romantic partner. Thor chooses to remain with her while believing his exile permanent, secures the return of her research equipment, and promises to come back before departing Asgard-bound. He later brings her to Asgard for treatment when the Aether threatens her life, defending her presence against Odin’s objections. Their relationship ends because their work keeps them apart, leaving Thor heartbroken 35 39 40 183 184 232.
- John Wick — Wizard ally and bargaining partner. Warns Thor about Loki, encourages his sense of responsibility, revives him, and helps restore access to the Bifrost. Thor thanks him and gives him the Destroyer Armor. Their friendship continues through the Avengers’ battles, Jane’s treatment, and Thor’s heartbreak. John guides him toward a private duel with Hela, helps him leave Sakaar, and later assists New Asgard’s settlement and economy. Thor continues to trust John despite having been blasted aside by him during the Sokovia crisis 33 37 38 39 40 94 184 232 258 427 437 537 543 545.
- Sif — Close friend and fellow warrior. Reveals that Odin is alive; Thor persuades her to survive rather than die fighting the Destroyer. She shows affection for him and trusts his judgment. She continues to support his campaigns across the Nine Realms and discusses routes to Svartalfheim with him 35 37 177 191.
- Fandral, Hogun, and Volstagg — The Warriors Three, his trusted comrades from Asgard. Come to bring him home and are prepared to risk their lives for him. They later support his efforts to suppress unrest across the Nine Realms 35 37 177.
- Erik Selvig — Human companion. Secures Thor’s release using forged identification, drinks with him, and is carried home by Thor afterward. Helps Jane during the conflict with Malekith; Thor entrusts Jane’s safety to him when preparing to face the Aether again 34 35 196 197.
- Phil Coulson — S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who detains and questions him. Thor later offers an alliance on condition that Jane’s confiscated equipment be returned 33 39.
- Heimdall — Asgard’s gatekeeper. Answers Thor’s call and opens the Bifrost after John helps free him from Loki’s icy imprisonment. Monitors Jane at Thor’s request, protects Asgardians resisting Hela, and calls on Thor to help evacuate them. During Thanos’s attack, he summons the Bifrost in an effort to send Thor away 39 40 177 437 504.
- Hela — Elder sister and rival claimant to Asgard’s throne. Destroys Mjolnir and drives Thor from Asgard. Learning her history gives Thor some sympathy for her, but he opposes the wars her ambition threatens to bring. He attempts to settle their dispute through a duel, then evacuates his people and accepts leaving the old territory to her. He later expresses conflicted admiration for her attachment to Asgard 424 427 438 439 440 504.
- Tony Stark and Steve Rogers — Fellow Avengers. Their first confrontation over Loki escalates into a fight before John reunites with Thor and introduces the group. Thor later fights alongside them, contributes to Vision’s creation, and remains on friendly terms with Tony in New Asgard 94 251 553.
- Vision — Fellow Avenger whose creation Thor completes by powering the Regeneration Cradle with Mjolnir. Vision proves worthy of lifting the hammer. During the later Sokovia conflict, Thor strikes Vision away to help John escape the Mind Stone’s mental intrusion 251 258.
- Valkyrie — Asgardian warrior Thor admired as a child. Initially associated with his captivity on Sakaar, she later pilots his return to Asgard, fights Hela alongside him, and pulls him aboard the evacuation ship. She becomes a pillar of support for the refugees, leads survivors to Norway, and helps Thor adapt to Midgard 437 439 440 504 536 543.
- Korg — Rock-man friend made during arena training on Sakaar. Accompanies the Asgardian refugees and explains the limitations of their sightseeing ship 430 504.
- Grandmaster — Overseer of Thor’s captivity and arena career on Sakaar. Favors Thor for his strength and promises him freedom after a hundred victories, a promise he ultimately honors 424 427 430 437.
- Rocket, Groot, and the Guardians of the Galaxy — Spacefaring allies. Rocket and Groot accompany Thor to Nidavellir and return with him to Wakanda after Stormbreaker is forged. Thor later arranges to travel with the Guardians once New Asgard is settled 518 545.
- Odyssey — New God King of Vanaheim. Thor spars with him and offers guidance on governing after Freyr’s death, recognizing similarities to his own younger self 536.
- Thanos — Enemy who defeats Thor and attacks the refugee ship, killing half of the Asgardians. Thor later swings Stormbreaker at his head during the allied assault 504 507 527 545.

- Temporarily lends Stormbreaker to John in exchange for assistance with land and legal status, then retrieves it after John’s research 537 543.
