Background / History

Tony Stark’s Disappearance

During Tony’s captivity, Pepper contacted every connection she could in an unsuccessful effort to locate him. She also kept Stark Industries’ daily affairs running, leaving her exhausted and unable to sleep properly. Even then, she recognized that her feelings for Tony went beyond their professional relationship 21.

S.H.I.E.L.D. brought Pepper to Hermione because the girl claimed she could foresee the future of someone close to Tony. Pepper initially offered full cooperation, but tried to leave when Fury explained that their proposed method was magic. Hermione shut the door magically and immobilized her with the Full Body-Bind Curse 21.

After Hermione released her, Pepper eagerly cooperated. The crystal ball displayed scenes of Pepper meeting an injured but surviving Tony at an airport. Hermione presented these remembered images as a prophecy and assured her that Tony would be rescued, while warning that the future was not fixed. Becoming Close to Hermione

Pepper comforted Hermione when the girl pretended to suffer a physical backlash from the prophecy. Believing Hermione had harmed herself to help Tony, Pepper resolved to make him thank and compensate her personally 23.

After Tony’s rescue, Pepper worried when Hermione stopped answering her messages. She asked S.H.I.E.L.D. about her whereabouts and searched New York schools for her name. When Hermione finally visited Stark Tower by broomstick, Pepper opened the office window, hugged her, and scolded her for the apparently dangerous arrival 27.

Pepper initially understood Hermione’s abilities as superpowers rather than actual wizardry. Further spell demonstrations and an explanation of Hogwarts persuaded her otherwise. She also apologized that Tony had not yet thanked Hermione, explaining his disbelief in predictions and preoccupation with developing his armor 28.

The Weapons Investigation

Tony’s return did not reduce Pepper’s workload: he shut down the weapons development division, concentrated on his armor, and left her to handle the resulting business problems. His decision to return to the Middle East also renewed her fears for his safety 28.

Pepper initially remained with Coulson and S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, but asked Hermione to take her closer to the battle. Riding a broomstick for the first time, she briefly enjoyed the flight before returning her attention to Tony. When he was defeated, she appealed to Hermione for help and then hurried to his side 35 36.

Obadiah targeted Pepper with missiles, prompting Coulson to shield her and Tony to demand her evacuation. Hermione froze Iron Monger’s launch ports before the missiles could strike. Following Obadiah’s defeat, Pepper supported Tony as they approached his body 36 37.

Relationship with Tony and the Avengers Proposal

By the celebration following Tony’s public declaration that he was Iron Man, Pepper and Tony were officially a couple. Pepper invited Hermione to live with her; because of her relationship with Tony, Hermione also stayed at his house 38.

Although displeased by Fury entering the house without permission, Pepper persuaded Tony to hear his Avengers proposal.
