|---|---|---|
| Magic level 1 | 1 | Initial recorded level. Practicing spells increases both spell proficiency and personal magical power. |

Forms of the Title
| Form | Usage and Meaning |
|---|---|
| Library Witch | Originates among Hogwarts students because Hermione is solitary, difficult to approach, and spends hours reading school histories in the library 6. |
| Gryffindor Witch / Witch of Gryffindor | Associates the nickname with her house. Students recognize her library seat and fear her temper; her classroom presence reinforces the title 75 83. |
| Witch / Miss Witch | The shortened public form. Justin Finch-Fletchley’s “Miss Witch” is the first time someone addresses her that way publicly 83. |
| Kale Witch / Cabbage Witch | Interstellar nicknames linked to reports that she defeated the Chitauri head-on while summoning terrifying “cabbages.” Hermione strongly dislikes both names 219 221. |
| Dark Witch | Used in predictions of universal destruction and by the anti-Witch faction in the Marvel world. Agatha also recognizes Hermione under this name 135 252 256. |
| Supreme Witch | Her leadership title within the Witch Cult. The Seven Sin Archbishops rank immediately below her 275 278. |
| Lady Witch | A respectful address used by followers, including Ava, Sitwell, Kaecilius, Agatha, and Wanda 277 376. |
| Witch of Light | An improvised compliment from an Auror praising her defeat of the Dark Lord. Hermione privately considers it absurd 363. |
Background / History
Origin at Hogwarts
Hermione’s aloof manner, mysterious behavior, and prolonged library visits earn her the nickname “Library Witch.” The familiar student grouping around Harry consequently becomes known as “the Library Witch and her two sidekicks” 6.
By her meeting with Luna Lovegood, students treat Hermione’s usual library table as reserved territory. They expect trouble when Luna occupies it, but Hermione instead sits beside her and helps her attempt the Patronus Charm 75. During a Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson, Justin addresses her as “Miss Witch,” bringing the nickname into direct public use 83.
Her reputation eventually disrupts Quidditch. Opponents fear retaliation and restrain their play; in a later season, the other houses withdraw when they learn she intends to participate. Hermione becomes a spectator so the tournament can continue 154.
From School Nickname to Public Threat
Hermione’s confrontation with the Ministry strengthens the title’s association with overwhelming force. After Umbridge attempts to torture her into confessing, Hermione devastates the Ministry; Tom fails to stop her, and Lockhart persuades her to lower her magic while the Aurors confirm Umbridge’s actions 160 162.
In the Marvel world, a Ministry operation explicitly identifies her as “Dark Wizard codename: Witch” 203. Tony challenges the logic behind the accompanying world-destruction prophecy, arguing that being powerful does not establish that Hermione is its supposed Dark Witch 208.
The campaign is not simply an outside attack on her reputation. Tom constructs both the Marvel-world Ministry of Magic and its opposing Witch Cult under Hermione’s instructions, using artificial Wizards to publicize Wizardkind. Their competing messages—order and control against power and freedom—both direct public attention toward Hermione 256.
Interstellar Recognition
Reports of Hermione’s destruction of the Chitauri spread the names “Kale Witch” and “Cabbage Witch” among extraterrestrial peoples 219. General Roman identifies her by the latter name on Xandar, provoking her irritation 221. Quill also calls her the Cabbage Witch and is slapped into a flower bed 225.
After she defeats Ronan and destroys his army, Yondu leads Ravagers, Nova Corps personnel, and Xandarian civilians in cheering for her as the Witch. Nova Prime thanks her for saving Xandar and entrusts her with keeping the Power Stone out of evil hands 232. Carol Danvers subsequently recognizes the Kale Witch as the figure who thwarted the Chitauri invasion 250.
Supreme Witch in the Wizarding World
During Hermione’s journey into the past, Grindelwald announces his allegiance to the Witch Cult and presents her as its Supreme Witch. He renames the Pure-Blood Party the Witch Cult, and the surviving followers kneel and acclaim her. Hermione’s first command is to “betray Grindelwald,” allowing his escape and their surrender to appear genuine to the Ministry 320 321.
Decades later, Grindelwald reports that more than half the Wizarding World is under the cult’s control. Its members include senior Ministry officials and ancient pure-blood families, but Hermione’s standing orders require them to remain undercover until the Witch authorizes the final operation 369.
Return to Hogwarts
When Hermione returns during Fudge’s attempt to arrest Dumbledore, students from all four houses celebrate the Witch’s arrival. To them, she represents invincibility after defeating Voldemort and defying the Ministry; the visiting Aurors instead react with fear 358.
Her subsequent Disarming Charm defeats the stronger Auror force Fudge has spent three years assembling 360. Following Fudge’s downfall, Aurors flatter her as “Lady Witch” and even “the Witch of Light” 363.
Authority and Organization
Leadership of the Witch Cult
- Supreme authority: Hermione leads the cult; Tom explicitly describes himself as an employee and identifies her as the boss 268.
- Appointments: She appoints Agatha as Archbishop of Greed and Wanda as Archbishop of Wrath in the name of the Supreme Witch 275.
- Command structure: The Seven Sin Archbishops hold positions second only to hers 278.
- Strategic objective: Grindelwald presents her program as ending magical secrecy, cooperating with Muggles, and infiltrating the Wizarding World 320.
- Public following: Ordinary people form supportive spiritual Witch Cult groups, while opponents establish anti-Witch organizations 256.
Witch Mark and Summons
- The Witch Mark is a small apple-shaped magical mark that transmits messages and summons, serving a function similar to the Dark Mark 269.
- Hermione replaces Barty Crouch Jr.’s Dark Mark with it and designates Malfoy Manor as a gathering place 269.
- Activating her own wrist mark sends a command across space to Tom, Agatha, Wanda, and Kaecilius 375.
- At the archbishops’ first gathering, she supplies personalized crimson robes with protective enchantments, including vacuum protection and magical resistance 376.
Relationships
- Tom Marvolo Riddle — Archbishop of Pride and Hermione’s subordinate. He builds the opposing Marvel-world factions and redirects Barty Crouch Jr.’s allegiance toward the Supreme Witch 256 268.
- Luna Lovegood — Archbishop of Sloth. Their relationship begins with shared library reading and Patronus guidance; she later assists Hermione’s alchemy and stands beside her at the archbishops’ gathering 75 375 376.
- Agatha Harkness — Archbishop of Greed. She joins after Hermione offers access to the masterless Dark Dimension and formally accepts her authority as Lady Witch 254 255 275.
- Wanda Maximoff — Archbishop of Wrath. She initially regards Hermione with fear, but later finds belonging in the cult and discovers that its leader puts on few airs in everyday life 255 275.
- Kaecilius — Archbishop of Gluttony. He answers Hermione’s summons and kneels before her as Lady Witch 376.
- Gellert Grindelwald — Cult organizer and subordinate. He brings his surviving followers under the Supreme Witch and oversees decades of covert expansion 320 369.
- Ava and Jasper Sitwell — Secret agents loyal to Lady Witch. Their attempted confrontation at a Hydra base reveals that both serve Hermione 277 278.
- Hogwarts students — The source of her original nickname and, later, an enthusiastic following that celebrates her return across house divisions 6 358.
- Tony Stark — Defends Hermione against claims that her power alone proves she is a prophesied world-destroying Witch 208.
Alternate-Future Interpretation
- A future Strange reports that Hermione preserves universal order while unaware of an unnamed entity or object; every future in which she discovers it ends 135.
- In that reported future, the Witch Cult’s Seven Sin Archbishops have destroyed all life beyond Earth, and Strange describes Hermione as a terrifying Dark Witch whom they cannot defeat directly 135.
- This account concerns a future presented by Strange, not the established outcome of Hermione’s current timeline 135.
