Matt silently turned the word over in his mind.
He recalled something he had once read in a book: one of the most important markers modern humans used to distinguish individuals was their genes. The human genome contained roughly three billion base pairs. Even considering only the common SNP sites that varied, there were tens of millions, each with multiple possible combinations. With natural, random recombination, duplicates were almost impossible among Earth's current population. Thus, apart from identical twins, whose genes were almost exactly the same, every person's genes could be considered unique. The probability of two completely unrelated strangers having identical genes was practically zero.
Practically.
In theory, if the human population were expanded infinitely, somewhere beyond who knew how many digits, someone would eventually appear-

When Matt had first read that passage, he had merely marveled at the wonder and greatness of life. He had never imagined that he would one day actually encounter something like it.
If what this girl named Miaomiao said was true, if her dad really looked exactly like him and even had an extremely similar bearing, that would truly be astonishing.
