Background / History
Childhood and friendship with Chen Yu
Tsukasa first meets Chen Yu while collecting seashells on a beach. A man claiming ownership of the beach beats him, and Tsukasa does not fight back. Chen Yu intervenes, takes a punch intended for him, and learns that Tsukasa no longer has a home and has only his seriously ill younger sister 2.
Chen Yu gives Tsukasa money, pays for a taxi, and searches hospitals with his parents until they find his sister. After Chen Yu introduces Tsukasa as his friend, his parents fund her treatment. Chen Yu later promises to study medicine to cure her, moving Tsukasa enough that he smiles at someone other than his sister for the first time in years 2.
Following Chen Yu’s advice, Tsukasa begins boxing to protect his sister and his new friend. He enters competitions after discovering that boxing can earn money, unwilling to leave the enormous medical bills entirely to Chen Yu’s family. Chen Yu continues paying for his sister’s monthly treatment and visits her whenever he has time 3 5.
Petrification and revival
Immediately before the petrification, Tsukasa receives Chen Yu’s message: “Tsukasa, let's meet again if we get the chance.” He rushes from his boxing venue toward the school after seeing the spreading light. His final thoughts before becoming stone are of Chen Yu and his sister 4.
After his revival, Tsukasa saves Senku and Taiju from wild beasts. When Chen Yu is revived after approximately 3,700 years, Tsukasa immediately embraces him. Chen Yu then discovers animal-claw wounds on his arm and treats them with herbs 4 5.
Conflict with Senku
Senku’s intention to revive everyone alarms Tsukasa because it would also restore the people who abused their ownership and power in the old world. Remembering the man who assaulted him on the beach, he fears that revived landowners would eventually drive others away again. He begins destroying statues he considers unworthy of revival, including those of elderly people, while placing a shell necklace on a petrified girl around his sister’s age 5 6.
When Chen Yu deliberately renders himself unconscious to avoid choosing between his friends, Tsukasa places him inside the laboratory and blocks its entrance with a large rock. He then pursues Senku, catches an arrow, and kicks Taiju hard enough to injure him. Although he initially spares the group for Chen Yu’s sake, he warns that he will kill them if they become his enemies 6 7.
Tsukasa accepts Chen Yu’s bet that Senku’s ideals will prove correct, but continues pursuing his own plan. He later strikes Senku’s neck with a knife-hand blow, apparently killing him without pain. Taiju and Yuzuriha escape with Senku using a gunpowder explosion and subsequently revive him; Tsukasa initially believes that Senku cannot survive without advanced medical care 8 9.
Building the Tsukasa Empire
After Chen Yu points out the difficulty of rebuilding civilization without Senku, Tsukasa begins organizing further revivals. A revived reporter helps identify his admirers, providing an initial base of loyal followers. Tsukasa controls access to revival fluid and maintains authority through his overwhelming strength; Hyoga joins after recognizing that he cannot defeat him 10 11.
Tsukasa also supports Chen Yu’s medical work, helping recruit assistants and preparing medicines under his instruction. By the approach of autumn, the empire has almost one hundred people. He limits new revivals to exceptional candidates because of winter food shortages and keeps roughly five reserve portions of revival fluid at Chen Yu’s request 21 22 35.
Approaching the decisive battle
Tsukasa refuses Hyoga’s request to take Chen Yu’s medical assistants on a mission. After Hyoga later reports Chen Yu and Gen’s betrayal and casts suspicion on Reiko and Miwa, Tsukasa refuses to punish the two women. He emphasizes the empire’s shortage of doctors and personally assures Reiko that no one will hurt her while he is there 36 46.
Despite Chen Yu’s assistance to Ishigami Village, Tsukasa continues hoping that his friend will return. Hyoga brings him information about the village, giving him material for planning the approaching confrontation. At this point, Chen Yu regards Tsukasa as pursuing his ideals rather than treating Senku as a sworn enemy 46 47.
Appearance
- Childhood: Slightly long hair and shabby clothing when Chen Yu first meets him 2.
- Physique: Tall and powerfully built; his enthusiastic embrace makes Chen Yu complain that he is being squeezed too tightly 4 8.
- Clothing: Wears animal hides after revival. Yuzuriha later makes him a more comfortable outfit 8 9 11.
- Looks: Chen Yu describes him as handsome 47.
Personality
Tsukasa is guarded and protective from childhood. He becomes immediately wary when a stranger knows about his sister’s illness, and later trains specifically to protect both her and Chen Yu. His hostility toward restoring the old social order comes from firsthand abuse, particularly being beaten by a man claiming ownership of the beach 2 5.
His gentleness toward Chen Yu contrasts with his ruthlessness toward perceived obstacles. He listens attentively to Chen Yu’s lectures, follows his medical instructions, and fears making him angry enough to stop speaking to him. Chen Yu’s opinion repeatedly restrains his actions: he initially spares Senku’s group and worries that further killing would make his friend regard him as a murderer 7 8 9 24.
Tsukasa is determined but capable of practical judgment. He adjusts revival priorities to available food, recognizes the value of medical specialists, and rejects Hyoga’s attempts to remove the empire’s doctors. His loyalty to Chen Yu survives reports of betrayal, though he becomes visibly frustrated when Chen Yu leaves to visit Senku 35 44 46.
