History
Nalan Rongruo becomes head of Ren Gui Courtyard after defeating the other contenders. She appoints Gu Changqing as her deputy despite objections to his apparent middle-stage Golden Immortal cultivation 96. Before the Outer Sect Competition, she presses him to take the courtyard’s ranking seriously because it determines future resource allocation. After he equips the disciples, she reluctantly asks him for a treasure too; instead, he upgrades her White Jade Dragon Spear into an Innate Supreme Treasure 97 98.
Nalan Rongruo wins ten points in the competition without using the upgraded spear. Guihai Courtyard takes first place and is promoted to Jiazi Courtyard 98. She and Gu Changqing are then assigned to investigate falling Essence Crystal output at the Fallen Phoenix Mountain Range. While tracking a shipment, she confronts a Mixed Origin Great Luo Golden Immortal to stop an apparent ambush on sect cultivators, despite being vastly weaker herself 98 99 100.
She accompanies Gu Changqing in his attack on the Blazing Fire Sect, fighting its cultivators with her spear. His use of the Great Dao of Emptiness makes her suspect that he serves the Void Hall, but she apologizes after he reveals that he is a Dao Realm practitioner 100 101. Gu Changqing subsequently introduces her to the Desolate Heaven Emperor as a mentor. The Azure Cloud Sect promotes both her and Gu Changqing to Inner Sect Disciples, and she passes leadership of Jiazi Courtyard to Ling Feng 101 102.
Nalan Rongruo later accompanies Gu Changqing against the Backing Mountain Sect and the Limitless Sect. During preparations for the Immortal Alliance Assembly, she also helps handle the assignment to deliver invitations across the Southeast Region, though Gu Changqing delegates the deliveries to Fire Phoenixes 102 103.
Personality
Nalan Rongruo takes responsibility for her courtyard’s performance and the Azure Cloud Sect’s interests. She is direct with Gu Changqing when his indifference threatens the competition, but finds it difficult to ask him for a treasure for herself 97. She admits when she has wrongly accused him and keeps his power secret at his request 101.
Her caution does not prevent her from fighting: she holds off a much stronger attacker to protect sect cultivators and charges into battle alongside Gu Changqing 100. She nevertheless questions the justification for destroying sects she considers righteous 102.
