Background / History

While lecturing at Golden Turtle Island, Tong Tian noticed the merit light emitted by Gu Changqing's treasures. Recognizing both the value and danger of a rogue cultivator carrying such wealth, he accepted Gu Changqing as his personal disciple and brought him to Biyou Palace; the disciple's Merit Treasures also halted the Intercepting Sect's loss of Luck. 1

Tong Tian was appalled by Gu Changqing's consumption of Nine Revolutions Golden Pills and Limitless Creation Pills, warning that pills could destabilize a cultivator's foundation. He subsequently ordered Gu Changqing to remain in Biyou Palace and cultivate. 1 2

When the Investiture of the Gods Calamity began, Tong Tian informed his disciples and ordered them to kill Jiang Ziya. He later rejected Gu Changqing's initial proposal to send Intercepting Sect members with poor virtue into the Tribulation, arguing that the sect's principle was to provide hope to all demon immortals without discrimination. 5 15

Tong Tian publicly defended Gu Changqing's establishment of the Human Emperor title, refusing demands from Laozi, Yuanshi Tianzun, and the Western Sages to abolish it. His defiance escalated into a battle in Chaos, where he deployed the Immortal Slaughtering Sword Formation against the Two Sages of the West before Yuanshi and Laozi joined the siege. 27

Nüwa's intervention enabled Tong Tian to withstand the four-Saint assault. He later travelled to Chaoge, warned Gu Changqing about the supposedly unknown expert who had asked Nüwa to help, and entrusted his disciple with a Talisman Sword for emergencies—unaware that Gu Changqing himself was that expert. 28

After witnessing Gu Changqing contend evenly with Yuanshi Tianzun and learning that his disciple had Proved the Dao of Mixed Origin, Tong Tian gave his full support to Gu Changqing's plan to judge Intercepting Sect disciples by karma rather than cultivation during the Tribulation. 30

Tong Tian accepted the return of his lost Six Souls Banner without probing Gu Changqing's explanation, respecting his disciple's secrets. Later, he freely lent the banner to Gu Changqing for the conflict against Haotian. 44 58

In later sect affairs, Tong Tian acknowledged that Gu Changqing's disciples had become major powers across the Three Realms. He eventually entered seclusion and delegated the Intercepting Sect's affairs to his closed-door disciple, Qiu Wangji, while linking the Four Swords of Zhuxian to Qiu Wangji's command. 62 116

Personality

Tong Tian is protective but highly pragmatic. He immediately saw Gu Changqing as a “walking treasury,” yet made the newcomer his personal disciple because such conspicuous Merit Treasures would attract deadly attention and could stabilize the Intercepting Sect's Luck. 1

He is easily exasperated by wastefulness, particularly Gu Changqing's casual use of precious pills and treasures. Despite this, he repeatedly supports his disciple when outsiders threaten him, prioritizing loyalty to the Intercepting Sect over pressure from other Saints. 1 27 30

Tong Tian is fierce and confrontational toward those he believes are meddling in the Eastern Lands or targeting his sect. His anger at being besieged by his fellow Saints ultimately breaks his faith in the unity of the Three Pure Ones. 27

Beneath his temper, Tong Tian respects personal boundaries and shows genuine concern for his disciples. He chose not to investigate Gu Changqing's secrets, and gave him a Talisman Sword so he could summon aid in a crisis. 28 44
