Seeing how little confidence Twilight had in himself, Yor encouraged him. "It's all right. Please have faith in yourself!"
"Didn't little Anya say it herself? You're a perfect-score father! To her, you're an amazing father, Mr. Loid!"
Twilight's pupils contracted. A moment later, he smiled.
That's right. Right now, I'm Loid Forger, Anya Forger's father. Even if I'm not a perfect father... in her eyes, I'm worth full marks!
With that realization, his spirits lifted considerably. "I'm truly grateful to hear you say that."
Yor grew uneasy. She had meddled in someone else's family affairs again. "Ah... um, I'm an outsider, yet I'm talking as though I understand your family..."
Twilight shook his head. "No, Miss Yor, you're not an outsider, and this isn't someone else's family... You're a member of the Forger family too. I'll be counting on you for the things I can't manage..."
"Mm..." Yor's face flushed, a rare sight. "R-right. I'm a married woman now."
"Hahaha, you'll have to be more careful when we're out." Twilight chuckled, his thoughts clearing as he worked out what to do next.
That's right, Twilight. Don't rush. This is a very long mission. Gaining someone's trust and getting close enough to observe them requires extraordinary patience... I know you can do it.
First, try getting to know your daughter, Anya!
Just then, the clock on the wall chimed. Twilight stood and headed toward Anya's room. "Phew... Anya, your spy cartoon is about to start. Let's watch it before we think about studying."
"..."
Not a sound came from the room.
"Anya?" After calling her name again, he opened the door and went inside. He found Anya asleep at her desk, drool already running from her mouth.
"Honestly, you'll catch a cold like this." Twilight carried Anya to bed, arranged her pillow, and tucked her in.
"Good night."
Tap, tap, tap!
Having finished his day's work, a man was just about to head home when he spotted a familiar figure. "Hey, you've been working hard, Yuri. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs' elite really are something else."
The man he greeted turned around. His name was Yuri Briar. On the surface, he was an office worker at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but his true identity was a second lieutenant in the Combat Division of Ostania's National Security Service. He had arrested a spy in the Government Office that day, which was why he was heading home late.
"Ah, Mr. Dominic. Work's been so busy, I haven't had any chance to go home..."
Then Yuri remembered something very important and blurted out, "Oh, right, Mr. Dominic! How was the party? Didn't my sister say she was looking for a man to accompany her a while ago?!"
Dominic thought back and soon remembered, mostly because that man had left such a strong impression on him. "You mean Miss Yor? Congratulations..."
Dominic told Yuri about Yor and Twilight. When Yuri heard the story, his vision went dark, and he felt as though the sky had fallen.
"My sister... got married..."
Ring, ring, ring! Ring, ring, ring!
A phone suddenly rang at Yuri's waist. He quickly took it out, and a cold glint flashed in his eyes when he saw the name on the screen.
But his gaze quickly softened again, and he hurried back out of the apartment building. "Sorry, Mr. Dominic. Work's calling again."
Watching Yuri's busy figure retreat, Dominic could only sigh. "Ah, young people really are full of drive."
Yuri soon arrived at the National Security Service hidden within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He quickly changed into his military uniform, rushed to the conference room, and saluted the people inside. "My apologies, officers. I'm late."
A seated man gestured for him to sit. "You're here, Yuri. Take a seat. The meeting will begin shortly."
"Yes, sir." Yuri saluted again, then took the seat at the very end.
He was only twenty that year, yet he had already become a second lieutenant. To complete a mission, he could go three days and nights without sleep, and he would use any means necessary to achieve his goals. Threats, intimidation, punches, kicks-he was adept at them all.
And everything he did was for that woman-his sister, his beloved sister. As long as he could protect the country where she lived, there was nothing Yuri Briar wouldn't do!
No one could stand in the way of his resolve!
About fifteen minutes later, the entire conference room was packed. At a rough estimate, over a hundred people had squeezed inside.
The seated man stood, and the screen behind him lit up at the same time.
"Everyone, I apologize for gathering you here so late, but I hope you'll understand that this is for the sake of national security."
"Of course, Director! National security comes before everything!" Yuri sprang to his feet in excitement. His attitude pleased the director, who couldn't help nodding.
Just look at him. What a gratifying subordinate. Capable, unafraid of hardship or exhaustion, willing to work long hours, efficient, and even able to make his superior feel appreciated. If someone like him didn't get promoted, who would?
"Good. I understand everyone's determination. Now, let's continue with the reason I've called you all here."
The screen behind him switched to an image of a black silhouette.
The director pointed at the silhouette, his tone grave. "I'm sure many of you recognize this figure. The infamous assassin, Black Nightmare, has appeared in Ostania again!"
A chorus of sharp gasps immediately rose from the audience. Naturally, they knew of someone that ruthless.
"The world's second-ranked assassin." "The king of the night."
Surely they weren't going to be sent to capture someone like that!
The director tapped the table. "That's right. Just as you're all thinking, this time we must capture him, no matter the cost!"
"He's gone too far. Not only did he assassinate two of our ministers a week ago, he also attempted to steal our country's next economic plan. Recently, he's even threatened our parliament members..."
"No matter how capable he is, we in the National Security Service cannot let a criminal like him remain at large!"
Bang!
"I will never let someone like that get away!"
Yuri was visibly fired up. He had heard of Black Nightmare's fearsome reputation many times. This was the second person on his list of targets he wanted to capture.
The person in first place was named Twilight.
One was a top assassin, the other a top spy. Both posed enormous threats to national security.
If he could capture them both, he would not only protect his beloved sister but also earn a promotion-two birds with one stone.
