Background / History

Yuri and Yor lost their parents as children and lived in poverty, sometimes unable to afford school supplies. Yor raised him and earned money for his education, often returning home covered in blood and injuries. Unaware of her assassin work, Yuri understood this as evidence of her sacrifices and resolved to become successful enough to protect her 49.

Yor’s encouragement helped motivate his studies. He taught her things he had learned, including information about insects despite her fear of them, and studied harder in response to her praise 39.

By twenty, Yuri had become a second lieutenant in the National Security Service’s Combat Division. His Ministry of Foreign Affairs position conceals his secret police work, which includes arresting spies. He keeps his real occupation from Yor because he does not want her to worry about him 40 47.

Personality

Yuri’s devotion to Yor governs both his career and his personal life. He considers protecting Ostania a means of protecting the country where she lives, and is willing to use threats, intimidation, and violence to accomplish that goal. Capturing major enemies also appeals to him as an opportunity for promotion 40.

His enthusiasm is accompanied by impatience and inexperience. He volunteers for dangerous assignments, resists orders to rest, and confronts Black Nightmare before reinforcements arrive. Although capable of sustained work, repeated failures eventually leave him mentally exhausted 42 43 47.

His judgment becomes particularly unreliable around Yor. He accepts her claim that she simply forgot to tell him about her marriage, yet aggressively questions Loid’s suitability as her husband. Despite his jealousy, he eventually accepts Loid inwardly after Loid acknowledges the siblings’ hardships and promises to support her 48 49.
