Background / History
Competition for resources and succession
Yun Chi’s branch needed him to secure a seat among the Twelve Young Masters in the approaching Cloud Summit Tournament. Those positions determined core resource allocations and succession to the clan’s elder seats. The related Main Lineage Succession Battle also threatened the branch’s standing: losing its position would reduce its resources by seventy percent 14 16.
His Spirit-Devouring Body competed with Yun Qing’s Chaos Dao Embryo for resources such as chaos origin qi and primordial marrow stone. The superior Dao Embryo received priority, leaving Yun Chi with lower-grade supplies. By the time he discussed the situation with his grandfather, his physique had reached a bottleneck, and he urgently sought pure chaos origin 16 17.
Attempt to discredit Yun Qing
During Yun Hao’s audience with Yun Huang, Yun Chi offered to share his younger cousin’s punishment. He used the apparent plea for leniency to suggest that Yun Qing’s growing influence had made his followers arrogant, attempting to implicate him through Yun Shuo’s involvement in the conflict 13.
The maneuver failed when Yun Huang destroyed Yun Hao’s cultivation and questioned whether Yun Chi still wanted to share the punishment. Terrified, Yun Chi knelt, begged forgiveness, and abandoned his attempt to claim familiarity as Yun Huang’s “younger brother.” Yun Huang dismissed him after openly comparing his physique unfavorably with Yun Qing’s 13 14.
Yun Chi subsequently pressed his grandfather to seize Yun Qing’s Chaos Dao Embryo before Yun Huang came to trust him completely. He also suggested that the Bone Talisman’s method might allow them to pursue ambitions beyond serving Yun Huang, prompting an immediate, fearful rebuke from the Twelfth Elder 17.
Guard service and the false opening
Yun Chi joined the Cloud Valor Guards and received an assignment at Perching Phoenix Hall. After presenting patrol and defense reports, he positioned himself opposite Yun Qing beside Yun Huang’s throne, hoping to demonstrate enough value to replace Yun Qing as the clan’s favored prodigy. Yun Qing countered with familiar, attentive service to Yun Huang, and Yun Chi was eventually ordered to withdraw 19 20.
Yun Qing then deliberately displayed signs of injury to lure the Twelfth Elder’s faction into acting. Yun Chi escorted Yun Huang and Yun Qing to the clan academy, secretly monitoring Yun Qing’s aura. His physique detected a brief fluctuation during the lesson, which he treated as confirmation of serious internal injuries 20 22.
Yun Huang strengthened the deception by forcibly tempering Yun Qing with Radiant Sun Divine Power, leaving him visibly pale and disordered. Yun Chi mistook this condition for punishment, offered a Blood-Jade Ganoderma, and became increasingly convinced that his rival was vulnerable 23.
Ambush and death
When Yun Qing departed to clear the Myriad Beasts Ancient Domain, Yun Chi urged his grandfather to act immediately. The Twelfth Elder planned to extract the Chaos Dao Embryo intact, cleanse it through the Myriad Spirits Blood-Baleful Formation, and have Yun Chi devour its origin to become a Chaos-Devouring Body. This transformation was never achieved 31 34.
During the ambush, Yun Chi concealed himself at the rear of the formation. Yun Qing’s double pupils identified him through his physique’s hunger for the Chaos Dao Embryo. Revealing early Immortal King cultivation, Yun Qing bypassed the Space Chains and pierced Yun Chi’s heart with the Silent Abyss Spear 33 34.
Yun Chi’s attempt to devour the invading chaos energy failed, causing his physique to collapse. Yun Qing crushed his divine soul to prevent possession or renewed cultivation, preserved only a sinless wisp of true spirit, and shredded the physique’s remaining essence. The Twelfth Elder then abandoned his grandson’s intended inheritance and sought the Dao Embryo for himself 34.
Afterward, Yun Huang retrieved the corpse, reconstituted the destroyed Spirit-Devouring Body essence, and refined it with Radiant Sun Divine Flame. Its impurities, resentment, and lingering soul fragments were burned away, leaving pure chaos energy for Yun Huang to absorb; the corpse crumbled to ash 38.
Appearance
Yun Chi is a handsome young man with delicate, almost feminine facial features and a build resembling Yun Qing’s 13 19.
- Dark purple robes during his initial report to Yun Huang 13.
- Black Cloud Valor Guard armor while stationed at Perching Phoenix Hall 19.
- Black robes and a hood during the ambush against Yun Qing 33 34.
Personality
Yun Chi presents himself as respectful, articulate, and deferential, consciously echoing Yun Qing’s manner. His apparent concern for others can conceal manipulation: his defense of Yun Hao was designed to redirect blame, while his later concern for Yun Qing served as an opportunity to inspect his condition 13 19 23.
Jealousy over Yun Qing’s talent, resources, and privileged access to Yun Huang drives his ambitions. Although Yun Huang’s intimidation temporarily reduces him to pleading terror, it does not end his resentment. His confidence in his own perceptions makes him susceptible to Yun Qing’s staged weakness, and the promised Chaos-Devouring Body ultimately overwhelms his remaining caution 14 22 31.
Abilities & Skills
Spirit-Devouring Body
A rare heaven-tier physique belonging to the same category as the Chaos Dao Embryo, but several tiers below it. Its devouring nature lacks the Dao Embryo’s purity and ability to give rise to all things 14 16.
- Energy sensitivity: Detects minute fluctuations in another cultivator’s aura, including Yun Qing’s briefly disordered energy at the academy 22.
- Devouring response: Attempts to consume hostile energy entering his body, but fails against Yun Qing’s higher-order chaos power 34.
- Cultivation bottleneck: Yun Chi seeks pure chaos origin to overcome the limitation he has reached 17.
- Unrealized enhancement: His grandfather proposes using an intact Chaos Dao Embryo and the Myriad Spirits Blood-Baleful Formation to transform it into a Chaos-Devouring Body 31.
Divine Sense
- Secretly monitors Yun Qing throughout the academy outing and examines his unstable aura afterward 20 23.
- Accurately notices energy disturbances but misinterprets their cause, failing to recognize the deliberate deception 20 22 23.
