Appearance
Phoenix Woman’s appearance changes with nirvana, progressing from a Phoenix Bird to a child, a youthful girl, and finally her mature sovereign form 335 376 413.
- Nirvana form: A little girl wearing a brilliant long dress after emerging from the hot spring 335.
- Recovering form: Remains noticeably younger than she appeared during her initial pursuit of Su Mo, even after a year in the Forbidden Lands 376.
- Mature form: Tall and voluptuous, with black hair, luxurious gowns, and an imposing, regal bearing 413.
- Distinguishing features: Phoenix-shaped brows, almond eyes, a graceful neck, and skin compared to flawless white jade 408.
Personality
Phoenix Woman originally dislikes slaughter. As sovereign, she restrains Great Peng’s ambitions and seals the Demon Realm’s entrance to the Forbidden Lands to prevent its inhabitants from invading. After discovering the resulting massacres, she feels guilty about the suffering caused during her absence 369 377.
Nirvana makes her more childish, impulsive, and openly expressive. She trades insults with Su Mo, lashes out physically without intending to kill him, and joins him in ambushing cultivators for Divine Seals. Their childhood adventures in the Forbidden Lands become some of her happiest memories 311 337 410 415.
Restoring her cultivation brings back her pride, reserve, and intimidating authority, but does not erase her affection for Su Mo. She resents his assumption that their bond must end once she becomes the Phoenix Venerable again, directly challenging him for treating that conclusion as inevitable 413 418.
Her restored rule is markedly harsher. Believing her former gentleness enabled rebellion, she adopts “iron and blood” methods while distinguishing willing perpetrators from those coerced by Great Peng. She executes an offender, takes the life souls of implicated greater demons, and leaves loyal supporters exempt 416 417.
Abilities & Skills
Phoenix Nirvana
Nirvana renews Phoenix Woman but temporarily strips away much of her cultivation and mature disposition 312 376.
- Undergoes nirvana once every thousand years 399.
- Experiences declining cultivation and a trial of bathing in fire; she considers outside enemies the greater danger 312.
- Initially estimates that her vulnerable period could last three to five years—or three to five hundred years 312.
- Can restore her cultivation rapidly through the means preserved in the Phoenix Nest 399 410.
- Her Phoenix Feather protected Su Mo during his Spirit Transformation tribulation and enabled him to undergo nirvana as well 374 830 868.
Difficult Realm Cultivation
Her restored strength allows her to dominate Inquiry Realm cultivators and enforce her authority across the Demon Realm 414 420.
- Projects pressure over the entire realm upon returning from the Phoenix Nest 414.
- Injures the Blood Sect Master with a wave of pressure 423.
- Seals the laws around Su Mo, preventing his Confucian Dao True Words from connecting with Heaven and Earth 413.
- Can restrain her aura selectively, sparing Su Mo the pressure imposed on those around them 414.
Phoenix Physique and Feather Transformation
Her racial abilities remain useful even while her cultivation is depleted 337.
- Retains a formidable physical body during childhood recovery, though she acknowledges that it is inferior to Su Mo’s Divine Race body 337.
- Transforms ordinary phoenix feathers into clothing, limited to girls’ garments in the example shown 337.
- Creates the phoenix pulling her carriage from one of her own feathers 391.
- Stores the Phoenix Carriage within her body as a streak of light 393.
Cultivation Knowledge
Phoenix Woman explains advanced cultivation and Phoenix racial inheritance to Su Mo 391 392.
- Describes the Difficult Realm as involving the resolution of the Inquiry Realm’s three questions 391.
- Identifies the Confucian Sage as the sole known cultivator to answer those questions while still in Inquiry and advance directly to the Difficult Realm 391.
- Explains that a phoenix’s racial fortune passes to her sole offspring, leaving the mother unable to survive another nirvana 392.
- States that children born between a phoenix and another race are always female members of the Phoenix Race 409.
Weakness: “Filth” and Resentment
The Phoenix Race’s yang-aligned nature makes concentrated resentment and wronged souls especially dangerous to it 399.
- Instinctively avoids the Forbidden Lands’ haunts of vengeful souls 399.
- “Filth” refers to spiritually hostile resentment, not merely ordinary dirt 399.
- Great Peng exploits this weakness by sealing the Phoenix Nest with the wronged souls of Demon Realm subjects, creating a barrier she cannot cross 399.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Phoenix Feather — A unique feather bearing the blessings of deceased phoenixes; only one can exist at a time. Her own feather is destroyed protecting Su Mo, and she says she will consequently leave none behind after death 408.
- Phoenix Carriage — A golden-wood carriage drawn by a phoenix formed from her feather. Its defensive light blocks Su Mo’s weakened use of Frost, though the Rain Realm’s power still immobilizes it 305 391.
- Phoenix Palace — Her residence and a Sacred Artifact that outsiders cannot control. She can shrink it into her palm and attack with its phoenix cry 414 427.
- Aura-concealing Spirit Jade — Given to her by Su Mo to hide from Great Peng. Its protection is unreliable at close range, and using her powers would expose her aura 370 393.
- Frost, temporarily borrowed — Sought to open a sealed nirvana sanctuary in the Demon Realm. She returns it when Great Peng’s preparations make returning there unsafe 312.
History
Inheritance and Early Rule
Phoenix Woman’s mother died in nirvana when Phoenix Woman entered Tribulation at one thousand years old. She then inherited authority over the Demon Realm. According to her mother, her father had died before she was born 409.
As ruler, she suppressed Great Peng’s desire for war and closed the Demon Realm’s passage into the Forbidden Lands. Great Peng calculated the timing of her next nirvana and attacked when her cultivation weakened 369.
Bargain with Su Mo
Phoenix Woman initially pursues Su Mo to borrow Frost, intending to use it to enter a safe, sealed location for nirvana. After he saves her and brings her into the Void Land Between Realms, she explains that Great Peng’s preparations have made the Demon Realm unsafe 305 307 311 312.
She offers Su Mo a Phoenix Feather in exchange for protection until her nirvana ends. He agrees on the condition that he remain free to pursue his own affairs rather than hide with her indefinitely. He subsequently shelters her in his Spirit Sea 312 314.
Her feather later saves Su Mo during his Spirit Transformation tribulation. The two undergo nirvana together, become children, and seize Divine Seals in the Forbidden Lands. They eventually shelter on Divine Mountain and escape the Demon Race’s massacre 335 337 374 830.
Life Beyond the Forbidden Lands
After leaving the Forbidden Lands, Phoenix Woman accompanies Su Mo to Du Pingsheng’s bamboo home. Su Mo conceals her sovereign identity to keep his master comfortable, while Du Pingsheng thanks her for saving his disciple 374 375.
Their quiet life is overshadowed by unrest in the Demon Realm. Still only at Spirit Transformation, she decides to leave despite being unable to stop the chaos herself. Su Mo insists on accompanying her, citing his promise to remain through her nirvana 377 390 391.
In the Demon Realm, they disguise themselves as married flower demons and purchase a riverside teahouse. Su Mo cultivates Flowers of the Other Shore while Phoenix Woman manages the household and feeds Little Fish. She grows reluctant to abandon this peaceful existence as the time to restore her cultivation approaches 393 396 398.
The Phoenix Nest and Restoration
At the Phoenix Nest, Phoenix Woman discovers that Great Peng has sealed its entrance with the resentment of slaughtered Demon Realm subjects. Learning how he used her people to exploit her racial weakness fills her with fury 399.
When Great Peng forces Su Mo into battle, she attempts to sacrifice herself to relieve the pressure on him. Su Mo’s Flower of the Other Shore restrains her from intervening 403.
After the seal disappears, she enters the Phoenix Nest with Su Mo, who bypasses its racial restriction through a temporary karmic bond. Inside, they pay respects to her mother’s Phoenix Feather and discuss whether their closeness can survive the return of her former disposition 407 408.
She delays restoration for several days, sharing stories and attempting to cook while Su Mo teaches her. Ultimately, she accepts that she must resume her responsibilities and begins restoring her cultivation 409 410.
Return of the Phoenix Venerable
Fully restored, Phoenix Woman prevents Su Mo from leaving, seals his access to Heaven and Earth’s laws, and takes him to the Phoenix Palace. She confines him to her Sleeping Hall while reclaiming control of the Demon Realm 413 414.
Her government purges willing participants in Great Peng’s atrocities, warns those forced into submission, and demands life souls from implicated greater demons. She explains that harsher rule is necessary to prevent another rebellion 416 417.
Meanwhile, she and Su Mo argue over his assumption that her restored disposition has ended their bond. Their estrangement eases when she refuses to abandon him and dismisses his fear that his fate will bring misfortune upon her 418 425.
Defense of Su Mo
Phoenix Woman rejects the Cold and Blood Sects’ demands for Su Mo, recognizing their interest in his Dao Arts rather than their professed concern for justice. She orders their representatives to leave within three breaths or be killed 418 423.
When the Cold Sect Ancestor, Blood Sect Ancestor, and Great Xia Imperial Dynasty Ancestor arrive, she again refuses to surrender him despite threats against the Demon Realm. The Old Tree Demon and Divine Crow emerge to support her 428.
After the three Ancestors die and Su Mo prepares to leave, she asks him to leave Little Fish with her. He entrusts the fish to her care 434.
Calamity and Separation
During the crisis beneath the blood-red sky, Phoenix Woman orders the Demon Realm’s greater demons into the Forbidden Lands and tells Little Fish that they are going to find its father. Su Mo later prevents her from heading to the Ancestral Grounds and ends the calamity alone 482 830.
After his sacrifice, she receives his farewell letter and weeps while remembering their conversation about love 492.
Much later, she recalls a dream of a white-robed outsider protecting her while she was still in the womb. His knowledge of the Phoenix Nest and Phoenix Feather leads her to connect him with Su Mo 866.
Reunion After a Thousand Years
After a thousand-year separation, Su Jingyan returns to the Phoenix Palace. Phoenix Woman prepares a meal; he admits that her cooking is bad but says he still likes it. He then takes her into his Spirit Sea and expresses hope for a perfect ending if he survives what lies ahead 868 869.
There, he explicitly tells her, “I do like you.” She responds with tears and a contented smile. Before they part, she asks that, the next time they meet, he personally see her across 870.
