Background / History
Previous Life and the Estate
Chen Cang was a teacher before dying in a car accident. Reborn into the Dou Qi Continent, he spent his first four years in a daze before recovering his previous-life memories. His new parents were mercenaries who both died in an accident, leaving him to wander until Ding Dian took him in 1.
Ding Dian housed displaced children in an estate outside Tianying City, supplying food and monthly cultivation lessons. Chen Cang recognized this as a genuine kindness, but the children could not leave unless they became Dou Zhe. He spent five years training there and secretly learning from the instructors’ memories 1 3.
Tianying City and the Black Eagle Mountains
After becoming a Dou Zhe, Chen Cang moved into the City Lord’s Residence. Reading Ding Dian’s memories revealed that his benefactor was a Soul Hall Soul Envoy. Rather than reject that connection outright, Chen Cang began considering how to use the organization’s resources while retaining control over his own future 4 5 6.
Master Mo encouraged him to turn borrowed combat knowledge into practical experience. Chen Cang trained in the Black Eagle Mountains, first correcting wasteful Dou Qi expenditure and then spending a year sparring with the defensive Jade Wave Turtle 7 8 11.
He later accompanied Zhou Wen and the Soul-Eating Mercenary Group on a search for Azure Nether Fruit. The expedition suffered heavy casualties before a Tier 5 Demonic Scale Python attacked the survivors’ cave. Zhou Wen carried Chen Cang away, but the python pursued them 12 14 15.
Chen Cang subsequently awoke in a flooded underground cave. There he found Tianying City’s former lord, Feng Guanqiao, recovered his possessions, and buried his remains. A Green Spirit Pill from the recovered Storage Ring enabled his breakthrough to Da Dou Shi 16.
In the same area, Chen Cang befriended a juvenile Void Pegasus Beast. After training it as a mount, the pair gathered rare herbs throughout the mountains and departed north. Chen Cang promised to return and avenge the beast’s mother 18.
Arrival in Wutan City
Chen Cang crossed the Chu Yun Empire and Tagor Desert with the Void Pegasus Beast. In Stone Desert City, the absence of the Desert Iron Mercenary Group helped him establish that Xiao Yan’s familiar story had not yet begun 19 20.
On the way to Wutan City, he encountered the young Xiao Yi Xian and identified her Woeful Poison Body. He warned her mother to isolate her before its first eruption, left money, and invited them to find him afterward 21.
The Xiao Clan welcomed him as a Guest Elder. He advised its younger members and strengthened its position against Wutan City’s other two major families. Despite this involvement, he refused Xiao Zhan’s request to become Xiao Yan’s formal teacher, unwilling to assume lifelong responsibility for a trouble-prone future protagonist or compromise his Soul Hall plans 22 23.
Chen Cang’s private reasons for remaining with the clan were Gu Xun’er and Yao Chen. He obtained Earth-Tier cultivation methods from Xun’er’s memories and developed a bond of trust with her, while Yao Chen remained inactive inside Xiao Yan’s Storage Ring 28 29 30.
Ling Ying’s investigation exposed Chen Cang’s true age and confirmed his origins. Eight months later, Xiao Yi Xian’s arrival prompted Chen Cang to leave the Xiao Clan. She and her mother credited his warning with saving their lives and pledged themselves to him 32 33 34.
The Green Lotus Core Flame and Alchemy
In the Tagor Desert, Chen Cang searched for the Green Lotus Core Flame as a possible route to obtaining the wood affinity necessary for alchemy. He used magical beasts’ memories to locate it, eventually extracting the Two-Headed Fire Spirit Snake’s complete recollections during combat 39 42.
Chen Cang tried to maneuver Queen Medusa into retrieving the flame and undergoing an early evolution. His intended opportunity was to claim the flame after her evolution had depleted its power. Reading her memories revealed that she was still a Nine-Star Dou Emperor progressing toward her peak, making an immediate evolution harder to force than he had expected 43 45.
Although he had not obtained the flame, Chen Cang later discovered that he had gained wood affinity. He suspected the earth fire lotus seeds, but could not establish the cause or explain his connection to the Lotus Platform. Gu He offered guidance and proposed taking him as a disciple, with that decision deferred until Chen Cang reached the Imperial Capital 48.
After giving Xiao Yi Xian the Poison Scripture, Chen Cang devoted five months to pill refinement and became a Fourth-Rank Alchemist. He then decided to accompany her to Jia Nan Academy’s recruitment in Blackflame City 50.
Appearance
- Childhood build: Slightly lean but sturdy, with strong limbs and an unusually mature gaze at nine and a half 3.
- Height: Approximately 1.7 meters at ten, after rapid growth during his first half-year at the City Lord’s Residence 6.
- Face: Described as handsome rather than breathtaking, with youthful spirit replacing his earlier childish softness 6.
- Disguises: Sometimes travels in a deliberately bedraggled appearance, though his bearing still distinguishes him from ordinary villagers 21.
Personality
Chen Cang is patient and disciplined. He spends years building a foundation rather than chasing quick breakthroughs, and continues prioritizing cultivation even when his Guest Elder position offers considerable comfort. Freedom is a central motivation: he distinguishes choosing to join the Soul Hall from being compelled into it 3 7 23.
His friendliness often serves a calculated purpose. Memory-reading allows him to understand what others want, whether Master Mo’s desire for companionship or Xun’er’s curiosity about his background. He selectively discloses information, conceals his ability, and sometimes fabricates accounts of his adventures 6 27 29 32.
His pragmatism does not prevent generosity. He freely advises fellow estate children and Xiao Clan juniors, buries Feng Guanqiao, and helps Xiao Yi Xian’s family. With Xiao Yi Xian, he openly acknowledges both his desire for a powerful ally and his inability to guarantee a solution to her condition 3 16 23 34.
Chen Cang recognizes that absorbed memories have affected his readiness to kill. He briefly questions whether continued exposure might leave him numb or cost him his humanity, but does not reach a confirmed answer 19.
Abilities & Skills
Memory Reading
By concentrating on a target, Chen Cang can observe its past experiences. He first discovers the ability while watching Yang Xiong teach at the estate 1 2.
- Selective viewing: Can stop voluntarily, skip memories, and inspect particular periods instead of watching an entire lifetime 2.
- Knowledge acquisition: Learns cultivation methods, Dou Techniques, personal histories, and successful breakthrough experiences 2 4 28.
- Intelligence gathering: Exposes Ding Dian’s Soul Hall allegiance and helps him assess concealed motives and strengths 5 12.
- Magical beast targets: Reads beasts’ memories to map territories, identify combat habits, and locate natural treasures 7 8 14 39.
- Combat use: Can assemble a complete memory record through repeated, interrupted readings while evading attacks 42.
- Limits: Strain depends on the target’s soul power and the amount viewed. Overuse initially causes severe pain and unconsciousness 2.
- Unresolved origin: Later suspects the ability may extend to things possessing a spirit, but still does not understand its source 48.
Soul Perception and Inner Sight
Repeatedly exhausting his mental strength improves Chen Cang’s Soul Perception. During his estate years, he deliberately pushes himself to unconsciousness more than twenty times; eventually, reading a Dou Shi’s entire life causes only mild discomfort 3.
- Tracks fast opponents well enough to negate the Striped Wolves’ principal advantage 14.
- Examines his body in detail by combining Soul Perception with Inner Sight 38.
- Discovers and erases a faint snake-shaped tracking mark placed by Hai Bodong 38.
- Has no confirmed soul-realm ranking in the supplied account; Chen Cang himself lacks a way to measure it during his early training 3.
Cultivation Methods and Dou Qi Defense
- Crimson Fire Refinement: Mid Black-Tier fire method selected for its emphasis on refinement and control, supporting his intended pursuit of alchemy 5 6.
- Heavenly Flame Art: Low Earth-Tier method obtained from Xun’er’s memories. Chosen over Two Poles Flame Spirit Method for its forcefulness and compatibility with sweeping weapon attacks; changes his Dou Qi from reddish to dazzling gold 28 29 40.
- Dou Qi Veil: Dou Shi defense that also improves speed and attack power 8.
- Dou Qi Armor: Defensive armor formed after his Da Dou Shi breakthrough 16.
Martial Techniques
Chen Cang draws on numerous instructors’ experiences rather than a single martial lineage. Spear use is his most visible specialty, but he also practices other weapons and unarmed disciplines 11 36.
- Mountain-Splitting Rend: High Yellow-Tier spear technique chosen to help him grasp related spear skills 6.
- Sea-Splitting Palm: High Yellow-Tier palm technique, used alongside spear attacks against the Striped Wolves 6 14.
- Starpoint: Low Xuan-Tier spear technique learned from an instructor’s memories; delivers five fatal strikes to one Striped Wolf in a moment 6 14.
- Ashen Extinction Flash: High Xuan-Tier movement and attack technique taken from Ding Dian’s memories. Requires precise Dou Qi control and a strong physique; leaves ember-like traces as the user moves 11.
- Mountain-Coiling Fist: Among the techniques used while sparring with the Void Pegasus Beast 17.
- Bagua Palm: Applies sustained pressure to Hai Bodong’s defenses 36.
- Swallow Return Strike: Reflects Hai Bodong’s Mysterious Ice Thorn, wounding his face 36.
- Practical limitation: Borrowed experience is not automatic mastery; real combat is necessary to integrate it, and overwhelming strength can still defeat his repertoire 7 17.
Flight and Mobility
- Purple Cloud Wings: A flying Dou Technique that Xun’er discovers during their time together 32.
- Void Pegasus Beast riding: Trains the beast to carry him and follow directions, enabling rapid travel, herb gathering, and escape from hostile magical beasts 18 32.
Alchemy and Poison-Making
- Initially possesses strong fire affinity but no wood affinity, preventing him from becoming an Alchemist 5 48.
- Can identify Feng Guanqiao’s stored pills at a level comparable to a Third-Rank Alchemist before formally attaining an alchemy rank 16.
- Receives early alchemy instruction from Master Mo and later guidance from Gu He 48.
- Uses a Frost Land Turtle Beast Flame for his first successful ranked pill refinement 50.
- Knows how to compound poisons; the supplied account does not specify particular formulas or a poison-master rank 32.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Spear — Principal early weapon; broken during the disastrous mountain expedition, but still used afterward 7 16 17.
- Intermediate-grade Storage Ring — Recovered from Feng Guanqiao. Holds roughly twenty cubic meters; its contents include 890,000 gold coins, pills, daily necessities, and cultivation scrolls 16.
- Qi Gathering Powder — Keeps his original dose after breaking through without it; declines to leave it with Lü Guan because the estate could not reliably protect such a valuable possession 4.
- Green Spirit Pill — Fourth-Rank pill from Feng Guanqiao’s ring, consumed to advance to Da Dou Shi 16.
- Silver magic core — Used to persuade the Void Pegasus Beast to accept a rider and assist in its training 18.

- Pill cauldron — Ya Fei brings him an improved cauldron from Mittel Auction House headquarters 50.

Relationships
- Ding Dian — Rescuer and cultivation patron. Chen Cang appreciates his support but becomes wary after discovering his Soul Hall identity 1 5 12.
- Master Mo — Early cultivation and alchemy mentor. Their relationship becomes considerably warmer than Chen Cang’s relationship with Ding Dian 6 12 48.

- Xiao Zhan — Clan leader who appoints him Guest Elder and seeks stronger ties through Xiao Yan’s proposed discipleship 22 23.

- Xiao Ding and Xiao Li — Regular recipients of his advice and restrained sparring instruction 23.

- Ling Ying — Xun’er’s protector and investigator of Chen Cang’s origins. His investigation reveals Chen Cang’s true age and the circumstances of his presumed death 27 32.
- Xiao Yi Xian and her mother — Beneficiaries of his warning about the Woeful Poison Body. They pledge loyalty after surviving its eruption; Chen Cang undertakes to seek a solution without guaranteeing success 21 34 50.
- Zhou Wen — Expedition commander who advises and protects him, then carries him away from the Demonic Scale Python 14 15.
- Hai Bodong — Temporary opponent following a misunderstanding involving Medusa’s aura. Both stop fighting once they recognize they are not mortal enemies 36.
- Queen Medusa — Rival in his plans for the Green Lotus Core Flame. She monitors him, while he attempts to exploit her anticipated evolution 39 44 45.
- Gu He — Alchemy adviser and prospective master; formal discipleship remains undecided 48.
- Yao Chen — One of Chen Cang’s concealed reasons for joining the Xiao Clan, but remains inaccessible while dormant in Xiao Yan’s ring 30.

Trivia

- He claims to be eighteen when mercenaries question him at ten, and later tells the Xiao Clan that he is fifteen. Ling Ying eventually discovers that he is only thirteen 7 23 32.
- Stone Desert City’s public intelligence lists him as seventeen and a half and probably a high-level Da Dou Shi, despite his already having reached Dou Ling 44.
- Hai Bodong’s apparent belief that Medusa killed Chen Cang is another false report of his death, separate from Tianying City’s assumption that he perished with the expedition 32 39.
