Background and Influence
The Soul Hall is a major Central Plains power that stands alongside the Pill Tower. Its exceptional reserves come from the Soul Clan behind it, rather than its public influence alone. Even resources accessible to low-ranking members can offer opportunities otherwise far beyond their reach 91 113.
Its influence extends into the Northwest Continent through concealed operatives embedded in empires and sects. The Tianxing Empire is already under its control, while Chen Cang reports that other factions and empires also fall within its covert network 93 119 187.
Despite widespread awareness of its existence, the Soul Hall keeps its internal structure and branch locations obscure. This secrecy makes retaliation difficult even for the Pill Tower 148 178.
Organization and Hierarchy
Ranks
| Rank | Strength / Grades | Responsibilities and Standing |
|---|---|---|
| Hall Master | Hun Miesheng | Shares the highest organizational tier with the Deputy Hall Master; personally handles valuable recruits and rewards 155 188. |
| Deputy Hall Master | Cultivation not specified | Holds one of the two highest positions 155. |
| Heavenly Venerates | Nine positions; high-level Dou Zun or above | Pillars of the organization, ranked above ordinary Venerable Elders 155. |
| Venerable Elders | Dou Zun | Supervise branch operations and determine Protectors’ annual quotas 6 152. |
| Protectors / Guardians | Dou Zong; Human, Earth, and Heaven grades | Formal operational members with special assignments and annual mission quotas 6 136 148. |
| Soul Envoys | Dou Wang and Dou Huang are identified as typical candidates; Yellow, Black, and Xuan tiers are documented | Primarily handle information, introductions, surveillance, and logistics while concealing their identities 6 90 151. |
- Value affects status: usefulness and strength determine a member’s standing; competition between valuable recruits is tolerated 171.
- Alchemists receive preferential treatment: recruitment rewards increase with alchemist rank, and verified eighth-tier alchemists receive treatment at least equivalent to Venerable Elders 137 152.
- Internal killing is not forbidden: Protector Xuan states that it is nevertheless discouraged, since it can damage cooperation and provoke the Venerable Elders’ disapproval 123.
- Protection is limited: Protector Hu warns that a Soul Envoy who exposes their identity and is killed should expect neither rescue nor revenge 105.
Recruitment and Promotion
| Entry / Promotion Route | Requirements | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary recruitment | Numerous tests and trials before admission | Opportunity to join the Hall 90. |
| Soul Envoy–nurtured recruit | A simplified assessment requiring the soul of a Dou Wang expert or stronger | Soul Envoy status; the submitted soul determines initial tier and grade 90 136. |
| Mission-specific recruitment | Recruitment by a Protector for a particular objective, followed by tests | Corresponding organizational status; Ding Dian entered through this route 90. |
| Soul Envoy rank upgrade | Submission of a soul meeting the next token’s requirements; Soul Points cannot substitute for it | Higher status, expanded exchanges, and lower prices for some items 109. |
| Protector assessment | Chen Cang pays 1,000 Soul Points, must kill a Dou Zong-level Shadow, and must survive at least one month | Protector qualification; longer survival grants a higher grade, with six months qualifying for Heavenly Protector 136. |
| First branch reporting | Meet the immediate superior, establish the mission-submission location, and receive an annual quota | Assignment of duties and collection of standard Protector equipment 152. |
Protector quotas carry rewards for exceeding the requirement and punishment for falling short. High-value specialists can receive exemptions: Yin Tianfeng excuses Chen Cang from ordinary Protector missions pending verification of his eighth-tier alchemy 148 152.
Halls and Facilities
Branch Network
| Division / Location | Documented Details |
|---|---|
| Heavenly Dipper Hall | Divided into the Heaven, Earth, and Human Halls—the organization’s three most important branches 148. |
| Earth Fiend Halls | Twenty-four branches, normally garrisoned by low-level Dou Zun, mostly between one and four stars 152 179. |
| Northern Heaven Branch Hall | Located deep in the Northern Heaven Desert, in the Central Plains’ Northern Region; houses Yin Tianfeng, the Poison Venerable, and Old Man Tianqing 151 152. |
| Heaven Burial Ravine branch | Located in the Tianxin Empire; Chen Cang identifies it to the Pill Tower as a suspected Soul Hall branch, which Tian Leizi later destroys 178 187. |
| Dead Soul Mountain Range branch | One of three branch destinations disclosed to Chen Cang through his Soul Token 148. |
| Exchange Hall | A vast, mist-shrouded facility within the Soul Clan, accessible through Soul Tokens 109 136. |
The Northern Heaven Branch Hall is an enormous black structure roughly one hundred zhang across, protected by an invisible spatial barrier that a Soul Token can open. During his arrival, Chen Cang detects nineteen Human- and Earth-Grade Protectors in its rooms, without counting possible Heavenly Protectors 151.
Nearby Xian City contains a concealed support network: Chen Cang detects at least ten High Xuan Tier Soul Envoys and one Human-Grade Protector there 151.
Soul Realm Trial Grounds
- Construction: a small world created by a Dou Sheng expert 136.
- Origin of the Shadows: Soul Clan experts gathered resentment left by the Xiao Clan’s destruction a thousand years earlier and used it to create energy bodies 137.
- Central settlement: Evil Spirit City, whose inhabitants are energy bodies rather than living people 137.
- Users: certain Protector candidates and the Soul Clan’s younger generation 137.
- Hazards: pursuit by other energy bodies and attacks from trial participants seeking to steal a successful hunter’s prize 137.
- Known administrator: Hun Qingxian, a Nine-Star Dou Zong member of the Soul Clan 136.
Soul-Seizing Plaza
At the Northern Heaven Branch Hall’s Soul-Seizing Plaza, captured souls are connected to spiderweb-like Soul-Locking Chains. These chains extract streams of soul origin and carry them underground; Chen Cang directly observes the process 153.
Soul Economy and Resources
Soul Points
Soul Points are the Hall’s internal currency, earned through tasks, commissions, and soul submissions. Protectors also use souls directly in private transactions because of their burdensome collection quotas 90.
| Transaction / Valuation | Amount | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Dou Wang soul | 10–90 Soul Points | Basic value rises by ten points per star, from One-Star to Nine-Star 109. |
| Dou Huang soul | 100–900 Soul Points | Basic value rises by one hundred points per star 109. |
| Low Black Tier Soul Token | One One-Star Dou Huang soul | A stronger submitted soul earns compensation for the excess value 109. |
| Dou Ling Pill | 50 / 40 / 30 Soul Points | Prices for Low Yellow, High Yellow, and Low Black Tier Soul Envoys respectively 109. |
| Soul-Restoring Demon Fruit | 100 Soul Points | Chen Cang spends his entire compensation from a token upgrade on this ingredient 109. |
| Protector trial entry | 1,000 Soul Points | Paid through the Exchange Hall 136. |
Higher rank expands the available exchange catalogue and reduces the cost of some common items. Soul techniques are available, but Chen Cang considers their prices prohibitively expensive before obtaining an independent inheritance 109 115.
Documented Resources
- Rare medicinal ingredients: Soul-Restoring Demon Fruit, Blood Essence Demon Fruit, Bodhi Body-Transforming Saliva, and Transformation Grass 109 138 157.
- Cultivation materials: sealed wind and thunder power, later used in Chen Cang’s training 138 150.
- Origin-enhancing hu: a blood-red, coral-like herb whose extracted essence directly increases cultivation; Chen Cang’s gift raises him by more than an entire Dou Zong star 155 156.
- Soul tea: dark-green tea leaves that accelerate cultivation 155 156.
- Alchemy Manuals: more than a dozen manuals written by generations of Soul Clan Alchemy Grandmasters, awarded to Chen Cang for infiltrating the Pill Tower’s upper ranks 188.
Methods and Equipment
Soul Harvesting
- Soul-directed attacks: Protector techniques chiefly rely on their uncanny nature and attack the soul directly 123.
- Life-Bound Soul Locks: major weapons that facilitate soul harvesting and can produce unexpected effects in combat 152 155.
- Soul-body manipulation: Protector Hu knows methods for forming vicious souls from soul bodies, although Chen Cang distinguishes these from the soul techniques he wants 105.
- Soul-origin extraction: captured souls supply the material collected at facilities such as the Soul-Seizing Plaza 153.
Standard Equipment
- Soul Token — binds to its owner, displays tasks and exchanges, enables Soul Point transfers, and connects the user to the Exchange Hall. It can also receive messages and open branch barriers 90 109 123 151.
- Black robes — Protector equipment made from special material that offers some protection against soul perception 152.
- Life-Bound Soul Lock — refined with a soul imprint and stored within the sea of consciousness; can extend, retract, and multiply according to available soul power 156.
- Destruction causes backlash to its owner; excessive multiplication increases strain and divides its power 156.
- Bee Flute — allows Chen Cang to contact his supervising Protector Hu 105.
- Communication jade slip — issued to Chen Cang by Qiu Di and used for operational coordination 155 174 179.
- Spatial Jade Slip — creates an escape rift; the Star Domain assault force uses one that Xuan Kongzi judges to have been made by someone at least comparable to the Deputy Hall Master 176.
Notable Members
- Hun Miesheng — Hall Master and Soul Clan member; personally rewards Chen Cang and proposes a future Heavenly Venerable appointment 188.
- Mo Yu and Qiu Di — Heavenly Venerates who verify Chen Cang’s Spirit Realm soul and oversee his rewards 155.
- Eighth Heavenly Venerate — directs recruitment and infiltration plans targeting the Pill Tower and Three Thousand Burning Flame 171 176 181.
- Old Man Mu Gu — Eighth-Rank Alchemy Grandmaster favored by the Hall Master; competes with Chen Cang and participates in the Star Domain assault 155 176.
- Yin Tianfeng / Extreme Ice Old Ghost — Northern Heaven Branch Venerable Elder who receives Chen Cang and arranges verification of his alchemy rank 152.
- Poison Venerable and Old Man Tianqing — the Northern Heaven Branch Hall’s other two Venerable Elders 152.
- Youlin — Four-Star Dou Zun Venerable Elder who fights Xiao Yi Xian during the staged confrontation at Sacred Pill City 176.
- Protector Hu — recruits Chen Cang, supervises his Soul Envoy assessment, and explains the Hall’s rules 90 105.
- Protector Xuan — Three-Star Dou Zong and Human-Grade Protector associated with Han Feng; captured by Chen Cang and Queen Medusa 123.
- Ding Dian — Tianying City Lord and Low Black Tier Soul Envoy; nurtures Chen Cang and introduces him to Protector Hu 5 90.
- Chen Cang — advances from Soul Envoy to Heavenly Protector and becomes a highly valued eighth-tier alchemist; joins principally to exploit the Hall’s resources rather than out of devotion 109 132 138 155.
Relations with Other Powers
- Soul Clan — patron and controlling power; supplies the foundations behind the Hall’s resources, facilities, and wider ambitions 91 136 188.
- Pill Tower — rival power of comparable public standing; becomes the target of infiltration and an assault on the Star Domain, then retaliates against a Northwest branch 113 171 176 187.
- Xiao Clan — target connected to its ancestral heritage and jade token. Chen Cang warns Xiao Zhan that surrendering the token may not eliminate the danger, given the Soul Clan’s historical hostility toward the Xiao Clan 93.
- Gu Clan — a potential refuge against pursuit: Xun’er advises Chen Cang to flee to the Eastern Region if exposed, where even the Soul Clan would exercise restraint 167.
- Su Youzi — pursued after her destructive battle with Bodhi Seed; she escapes the Hall but ultimately dies from her condition in the Land of Exile 116.
Major Operations
Recruitment and Advancement of Chen Cang
Chen Cang first discovers the Hall through Ding Dian’s hidden allegiance and decides to use that connection for access to resources. Protector Hu later recruits him through the simplified assessment reserved for Soul Envoy–nurtured candidates 5 6 90.
After becoming Heavenly Protector, Chen Cang reports to the Northern Heaven Branch Hall. Verification of his eighth-tier alchemy transforms his standing: the Hall grants him special equipment, cultivation resources, and direct contact with senior officials 138 152 155.
Pill Tower Infiltration and Star Domain Assault
The Eighth Heavenly Venerate initially plans to seize the Three Thousand Burning Flame at the next Pill Gathering. Mu Gu is ordered to recruit enough high-level alchemists to place Hall operatives in at least half of the top ten, while Chen Cang must gain the Pill Tower’s trust without revealing his allegiance 171.
Chen Cang proposes an attack in which he can appear to defend the Pill Tower. The later assault proceeds after Tian Leizi is lured away, with Chen Cang and Xiao Yi Xian publicly opposing Soul Hall fighters. Their resistance is stronger than their opponents expect, and Chen Cang seriously injures Mu Gu 171 174 176.
Tian Leizi’s return forces the attackers to retreat. The Star Domain remains intact, although damaged, and the Eighth Heavenly Venerate praises Mu Gu’s apparent “acting,” unaware that his humiliation and injuries were genuine 176 177.
Northwest Retaliation
The Pill Tower appoints Chen Cang Second Elder after the battle. He supplies the location of the Heaven Burial Ravine branch, then warns the Soul Hall that retaliation is coming without revealing the target 178 179.
Tian Leizi destroys the branch despite its four Dou Zun defenders. The lack of valuable spoils suggests that assets were moved beforehand, leading Xuan Kongzi to suspect a leak among the Pill Tower’s senior figures 187.
Hun Miesheng’s Offer
Hun Miesheng rewards Chen Cang’s infiltration with Soul Clan alchemy manuals and offers him the future position of Tenth Heavenly Venerable upon reaching Seven-Star Dou Zun. He also promises to request a child flame from a top-three Heavenly Flame in exchange for examining Chen Cang’s cultivation method 188.
Chen Cang identifies the proposed reward as a Nihility Devouring Flame sub-flame and recognizes it as a potential means of control. Hun Miesheng further states that reaching Half-Saint and ninth-tier alchemy could qualify him for a major Soul Clan undertaking and an introduction to the Clan Leader 188.
