Pre-cultivation: 9,050 scriptures mastered 1 Arrives with mastery of 9,000 volumes and continues studying in the Lower Court, concealing his actual progress from Wu Yong.
First-Rank Dao Seal 3 Unlocks after mastering 10,000 scripture volumes without possessing any magical power. His record lists no realm, method, or spells, with an age/lifespan of 18/100.
Qi Gathering +1 3 Spends his first strand of Heavenly Opportunity on the trait. A second trait requires ten strands; the next Dao Seal rank requires 20,000 mastered volumes.
Initial mana refinement 5 His perfected Bright Moon Shines on Me Method produces two wisps in its first session. Paper Moons accelerate refinement, and his first dawn session gathers two wisps of purple qi.
First mana strand; Inner Landscape and Yin Spirit 6 Accumulates 10,000 wisps in four days, forming his first Bright Moon Mana strand. This creates his Inner Landscape and Yin Spirit; he then registers as a true Drowning Dao disciple.
Qi Refining / Yin Spirit: 30 Bright Moon Mana strands 9 Dao Seal records 10,800 mastered volumes, three wisps of Purple Qi Mana, 7,000 wisps of Great Sun Magic Power, and an age/lifespan of 18/120.
Accelerated moonlight refinement 22 Adds a jade-disc arrangement and supporting materials, refining two streams of mana overnight.
Qi Refining / Yin Spirit: 110 Bright Moon Mana strands 23 Reaches 12,000 mastered scripture volumes and over 1,500 mastered spells. Records one Great Sun Magic Power strand, 110 Moonlight Escape strands, and an age/lifespan of 20/130.
Four mana strands in one night; moon essence production 31 Cultivating near Seven Maidens Mountain yields four strands. He condenses moonlight left over on his jade plate into moon essence.
Yin Spirit strengthened through yin merit 33 Permanently cleansing evil earns 51 yin merit. He judges the resulting increase in his Yin Spirit’s substance greater than fifty-one days of gathering purple qi.
First-Turn Outer Elixir acquired 36 Rapidly refines an external elixir supplied by other cultivators, allowing repeated replenishment of magical power during cleansing work.
Great Tomb cleansing rewards 38 40 Receives Three Heads and Six Arms, 1,000 Yin Virtue, and one wisp of Second-Layer World favor. The favor can become Foundation Establishment Spirit Light, but he does not yet advance to Foundation Establishment.
Yang Qi Furnace development 45 46 47 Cultivates furnaces on rented kidneys, merges them into his own, and expands the operation to his attachment limit of 10,000 pairs. The merged furnace continuously strengthens tissues within its range.
Qi Refining / Yin Spirit: 210 Bright Moon Mana strands 50 Latest record lists 12,500 mastered volumes, 200 wisps of purple qi power, three Great Sun Magic Power strands, 15,000 Yin Virtue, and an age/lifespan of 20/140. His Dao Seal remains First-Rank, with Qi Gathering +1 as his only trait.

Background / History

Wang Quan is a transmigrator seeking eternal life and immortality through the Dao. At sixteen, he had mastered the Immortal-Tutoring Bureau’s 9,000 scripture volumes and should have received an entry token for one of the 108 Orthodox Mystic Sects. An influential figure from his hometown switched the names, leaving him with an unorthodox token corresponding to only 3,000 volumes. He entered the Drowning Dao instead and vowed to return to kill those responsible and their kin 1.

At the Lower Court, he concealed his scripture mastery and delayed cultivation for two and a half years. While the rest of his intake left the Scripture Repository to refine magical power, he persisted until reaching 10,000 volumes and unlocking the First-Rank Dao Seal. He answered newcomers’ questions freely, but left their cultivation choices to them 1 3.

After beginning cultivation, he chose methods and survival techniques independently rather than following Wu Yong’s proposed role in Zhao Hongyi’s team. His paper figures later secured him paid ceremonial work and the title Flower-Scatter Daoist, which he continued using for occasional wedding and funeral commissions 4 10 12 50.

Appearance

  • Youthful face and shabby clothing: Early in his cultivation, his clothes were washed to a grayish white, and he did not even own a Daoist robe. Miscellaneous Goods Hall staff consequently assumed he only wanted free resources 5 7.
  • Concealed identity: Wears a Faceless Mask and black robe when traveling to defend Seven Maidens Mountain 29.
  • Yin Spirit: Resembles his physical appearance exactly; initially insubstantial and unstable 6.

Personality

Wang Quan is patient, studious, and protective of his independence. He endures years of solitary study before cultivating and continues reading scriptures afterward. Qian Xiuyue considers this persistence evidence that he will not easily abandon his plans. Even while apparently listening to her complaints, he can remain mentally occupied with scripture comprehension 3 31 41.

His caution shapes both cultivation and business decisions. He prepares escape and death-substitution techniques before venturing outside the Lower Court, avoids unexplored Second-Layer World routes, and postpones large-scale mana sales because they could expose his unusual refinement speed 4 9 30 50.

He is also intensely vindictive. He openly tells Qin Feng that he intends to deal with him later, secretly changes a burial site after clients withhold payment, and regards unpaid wages as a debt that can ultimately be settled with the debtors’ lives. Nevertheless, he is willing to test his strength in battle once confident in his escape options 7 22 29 33 50.

Abilities & Skills

First-Rank Dao Seal and Scripture Mastery

The Dao Seal supports his unusually complete understanding of cultivation methods and spells 3 18.

  • Rapid spell mastery: Once he memorizes a spell, brief contemplation by his Yin Spirit allows him to cast it perfectly 18.
  • Efficient artifact refinement: Refines the First-Turn Outer Elixir with a few scripture lines and mana strands, rather than the hours required by other owners 36.
  • Rare scripture comprehension: Enables him to decipher the People-Crossing Scripture, which other cultivators struggle to understand 28 38.
  • Advancement resources: Spiritual medicines, essences, and magical treasures can be converted into Heavenly Opportunity; his second trait remains locked behind a ten-strand cost 3 50.

Fundamental Cultivation Methods

Method Demonstrated use
Bright Moon Shines on Me Method Converts moonlight into Bright Moon Mana. Its perfected form includes moon worship to repay the karmic debt of harvesting moonlight and deepen his connection to the moon 5.
Purple Qi Reaches the Heavens Method Gathers purple qi once daily at dawn. Wang Quan uses it to stabilize his Yin Spirit and purify mana, later storing it while relying on cleansing work for spiritual growth 4 6 9 45.
Great Sun Across the Sky Art Refines Great Sun Magic Power. He practices it during breaks from scripture study 19 50.
  • Moonlight-gathering aids: Eight Paper Moons represent the moon’s phases; crater details, jade discs, and supporting materials improve his cultivation setup 5 8 22.
  • Mana purity: A strand of his Bright Moon Mana sells for 1.1 million Green Beetle coins after being judged exceptionally pure 7.
  • Conversion limit: Abundant moonlight does not translate without limit into mana; he turns the surplus into moon essence 31.

Plain Moon Paper-Cutting Art

Creates paper constructs for combat, concealment, ceremony, and survival 4 9 12 34.

  • Palace Maidens: Armed paper figures fight evil beings and cultivators; their inherited etiquette also makes them useful ceremonial attendants 9 12 25 33.
  • Detailed human templates: Dissecting two corpses lets him imprint organs, bones, flesh, and other internal structures into future paper effigies 9.
  • Transferred memories: Adds memories and cultivation methods from over 1,000 martial artists, together with household maidservants’ etiquette, to his paper-cutting box 9.
  • Death substitution: A linked effigy can automatically bear a fatal injury in his place. Only one such effigy can exist at a time 9.
  • Disguise and ambush: Tiny Paper People kill attackers, assume their appearances, and infiltrate their group 34.
  • Transport and reconnaissance: Paper People carry his chair, while paper birds scout enemies and deliver materials 20 22 33.

Moonlight Escape

Stores refined moonlight for rapid movement or displacement 4 8.

  • A strand of magical power can carry him ten li away or displace another person or spell the same distance 4.
  • He refines a Moonlight Escape into each mana strand and uses it to redirect incoming attacks 9 34.
  • Unlike ordinary mana-consuming spells, it cannot be used continuously simply by replenishing mana through the Outer Elixir 36.

Yin Spirit and Second-Layer World Travel

His Yin Spirit forms with his first full mana strand and benefits from purple qi, mana, essences, and cleansing rewards 6 9 33.

  • Improves memory and comprehension, supporting further scripture study 6.
  • Can pass through walls and enter the Second-Layer World without his physical body 23 30.
  • Requires protection: outside his lantern’s light in the Great Tomb, he estimates that exposure could erode his Yin Spirit within two hours 25.
  • Has not yet become a Yang Spirit; he treats that advancement and daytime Second-Layer World access as future goals 45 50.

People-Crossing Scripture

Permanently delivers evil entities rather than merely defeating them, strengthening his Yin Spirit and expanding the Lower Court’s Second-Layer World foothold 30 33 38.

  • Turns delivered beings into infants before they vanish 30 37.
  • Cleanses the Great Tomb General and ultimately eliminates the Great Tomb 38.
  • Can bind and torment a hostile gatekeeper through repeated recitation 42.
  • Requires substantial mana and repeated recitations; restraint by his Palace Maidens and replenishment from the Outer Elixir sustain the process 36 37 49.

Parting Chaos and Yang Qi Furnace

Parting Chaos lets him separate mana for sale, attach rented kidneys, and remove developed furnaces for merging into his own 7 45 46.

  • Yang Qi Furnace: Weaves kidney-emitted vital essence into a furnace that continually tempers itself 45.
  • Parallel cultivation: Rented kidneys develop separate furnaces that he consolidates into his own, accelerating bodily strengthening 46.
  • Demonstrated effect: His merged furnace covers one-third of his lower abdomen and continuously strengthens affected organs, flesh, fascia, and other tissues 46.
  • Limits and costs: His attachment limit is 10,000 kidney pairs; rental fees reach 100,000 Green Beetles daily 47.
  • Three Heads and Six Arms: Receives this unorthodox art from the General. He considers Yang Qi Furnace preparation relevant to its future cultivation, but no completed transformation is documented 38 40 46.

Other Learned Arts

  • Feng shui and earth-vein spells: Surveys burial sites and alters their arrangements to suppress—or potentially encourage—the formation of anomalies 18 19 22.
  • Ritual and netherworld spells: Studies these for funeral commissions involving dangerous corpses 17 18.
  • Thunder arts: Uses Great Yin Yin Thunder against the Cafeteria’s evil dishes. His later Dao Seal also lists Cold-Ice Yin Thunder and Illusory Moon Yin Thunder 43 50.
  • Inchlight Art: Uses it to inspect Fairy Qin during her procession 12.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Plain Moon Paper-Cutting Box — Lowest-grade magical artifact made from moon-patterned white jade, linked to his Yin Spirit through refinement and heart’s blood. Automatically cuts, draws, and prepares paper constructs 8.
  • Moon-Pattern Paper and spirit-infused tools — High-grade paper can double the paper-cutting art’s power. His scissors, brushes, ink, and inkstone support construct preparation and spellcasting 8.
  • First-Turn Outer Elixir — Hollow golden sphere whose medicinal aura restores spent magical power, sustaining prolonged cleansing work 36 37.
  • Second-Layer World favor — One wisp earned from the Great Tomb’s destruction. Can substitute for his death once in that world, enable a single 100,000-li escape, or become Foundation Establishment Spirit Light 40.
  • Protective lantern and Yin Spirit sheltering materials — Shield his spirit during Second-Layer World excursions; the materials are depleted through use 25 28.
  • Coffin dormitory — Automatically closes and opens, restores his energy after four hours of sleep, and later serves as part of his cultivation setup 2 22.
  • Faceless Mask and black robe — Used to conceal his identity during the Seven Maidens Mountain assignment 29.

Relationships

  • Wu Yong — Fellow intake member and former scripture-study companion. Their relationship deteriorates as Wu Yong tries to dictate his cultivation method and recruit him as a frontline fighter and decoy for Zhao Hongyi’s team 1 3 6 10 49.
  • Qian Xiuyue — Fellow intake member and reciprocal ally. Warns him against Wu Yong’s suggested method, hires him to protect her manor’s laborers, and later provides ten positions for people from Senior Sister Xu’s lineage 4 28 49 50.
  • Zhao Hongyi — Leader whose team Wang Quan refuses to join. Orders Wu Yong and others to cut contact with him; later assumes he will eventually regret his refusal 10 49.
  • Senior Sister Xu / Round-Faced Daoist Nun — Supplier and intermediary for materials, jobs, mana sales, and kidney rentals. Wang Quan later obtains retreat placements for members of her lineage 7 10 46 47 50.
  • Ponytailed Daoist Nun — Registers him as a disciple, purchases his first sold mana strand, and introduces him to Senior Sister Xu 6 7.
  • Officiant Daoist Nun — Employer and funeral-work instructor who names him Flower-Scatter Daoist. Their commissions also expose him to anomalies and withheld wages 12 17 22 50.
  • Dream Nun — Fellow ceremonial worker who introduces him to the Officiant Daoist Nun and advises him about accommodation and Second-Layer World risks 12 13 39.
  • Ying Jiaren — Younger scripture student who notices his troubled mood and encourages him to take a walk. Later asks about scripture study and cultivators’ manors 19 50.
  • Qin Feng — New-Method practitioner at the Miscellaneous Goods Hall. His dismissive treatment makes him a target of Wang Quan’s planned revenge 5 7 8 21.
  • Fairy Qin — Initially addresses his incoming Lower Court cohort; later supplies intelligence about Qian Xiuyue’s Star Alliance backers and likely New-Method interference 12 28.
  • Three-Headed, Six-Armed General — Former Great Yan Empire border general whom Wang Quan delivers from his anomalous existence. Gives him Three Heads and Six Arms in gratitude 38 40.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Funeral Commissions and Unpaid Debts

  • Helps select burial sites and conduct a funeral for cultivators killed by a curse. Their coffins burst open during the procession, releasing dancing skeleton anomalies 19 20.
  • Privately acknowledges that disposing of his enemies created the circumstances for their anomalous remains 21.
  • After the Zhao family and Blissful Union House withhold payment, secretly alters the burial site and investigates both debtors rather than confronting them directly 22.
  • Refuses further jobs from either household and retains his intention to settle the debt 23 50.

Great Tomb Cleansing

  • Initially clears the first three tomb levels with Palace Maidens, but finds too little gloom sand to justify the expense 25.
  • His mastery of the People-Crossing Scripture leads physical-body cultivators to fund permanent cleansing with pills, coins, and an Outer Elixir 30 31 36.
  • Delivers the General, causing the Great Tomb to disappear and the Lower Court Dormitory Complex to appear in its place. Receives substantially more cleansing-benefit purple qi than the other participating cultivators 38.

Defense of Seven Maidens Mountain

  • Accepts Qian Xiuyue’s request to guard construction laborers in return for a favor, while remaining outside the Star Alliance 28 36.
  • Defeats masked New-Method attackers through paper replacements, ambushes, and redirected spells, then sells the remaining spoils to Qian Xiuyue after claiming the corpses’ lungs 33 34 35 36.
  • Attends the completed retreat’s banquet as an upper-tier guest, despite Wu Yong’s assumption that his cultivation remains insignificant 48 49.

Cafeteria Cleansing and Bodily Cultivation

  • Moves on to the Second-Layer World Cafeteria, overcoming its ghost-faced gatekeepers and delivering evil dishes 42 43.
  • Encounters a powerful cook-like evil who retains memories of his life and questions Wang Quan’s claim to be helping the dead 43 44.
  • Develops Yang Qi Furnace through rented kidneys while continuing to cleanse Cafeteria carvings, study scriptures, and refine mana 45 46 47 49 50.
