Background / History
Scripture Repository
Wu Yong entered the Drowning Dao Lower Court in the same intake as Wang Quan. Although they came from different hometowns, they became familiar with each other within ten-odd days. Believing Wang Quan’s claim that he had mastered only 3,050 scripture volumes, Wu Yong privately expected his own stronger foundation to produce greater future achievements 1.
He remained among the few newcomers who continued studying rather than immediately cultivating. After Qian Xiuyue left, he and Wang Quan were the only members remaining in their token-based contact group. Wu Yong aimed to master at least 7,000 volumes, partly because he did not want Wang Quan to catch up with him 2.
Joining Zhao Hongyi’s Manor
Wu Yong accepted Zhao Hongyi’s first-anniversary banquet invitation and spent three days at her manor. Its luxuries tempted him to remain there, though he said he returned out of concern for Wang Quan’s loneliness. Afterward, his visits to the Scripture Repository became less frequent, and he eventually left to cultivate before reaching his scripture target 2 3.
At the manor, he cultivated between missions and relaxed with maids and songstresses. He tried to recruit Wang Quan as a practitioner of the White Bone Great Strength Demon God Method, intending to make him charge into battle and draw enemy fire. Wu Yong expected this arrangement to increase his own control within Zhao Hongyi’s team 10.
When Wang Quan chose another method, Zhao Hongyi ordered Wu Yong to stop contacting him and tell their companions to do the same. Wu Yong agreed 10.
Fury River Expeditions and Funeral
Zhao Hongyi’s team repeatedly gathered Black Sinking Sand from the Fury River for her senior brother’s spell cultivation. Wu Yong questioned the need for a second expedition in the same month and requested a White Bone method practitioner to make the work easier. The expeditions routinely caused deaths and injuries 10.
Wu Yong survived a later expedition that inflicted heavy losses on the accompanying martial artists and New Method cultivators. He celebrated a haul ten percent larger than the previous one, then accompanied Zhao Hongyi when she went to investigate killings within her lineage 17.
At the subsequent funeral, he questioned paying professionals to bury the burned cultivators, suggesting their skeletons could instead become Skeleton Warriors. He dismissed warnings about their scriptureless practice of the Lower Court’s Fundamental Method as scaremongering 20.
Later Contact with Wang Quan
Despite the earlier order to sever contact, Wu Yong later warned Wang Quan of an impending upheaval and again urged him to adopt the White Bone method and join his team. Wang Quan ignored the message 40.
At the Seven Maidens Mountain banquet, Wu Yong assumed Wang Quan’s apparent lack of a seat reflected his low standing and invited him to their table. After Wang Quan declined, Qian Xiuyue directly challenged Wu Yong’s belief that he had the right to determine his former friend’s future. Wu Yong subsequently found Wang Quan among the upper-tier guests and began questioning whether Wang Quan knew more scriptures than he did 48 49.
Appearance
Wu Yong initially has an honest-looking, youthful appearance; after beginning cultivation, his expression becomes confident, bold, and elegant 1 3.
- Clothing: Gray-white Daoist robes during his return visit to Wang Quan 3.
- Bearing: Bright eyes and an upturned mouth replace his earlier simple, honest expression 3.
- Transport: Arrives and departs on a crane during that visit 3.
Personality
Wu Yong’s outward simplicity conceals a competitive streak. He privately compares scripture totals and treats staying ahead of Wang Quan as a reason to persevere. Zhao Hongyi’s luxurious lifestyle also strongly appeals to him: her crane, manor, and entertainments embody the cultivation life he had imagined 1 2 3.
His attitude toward Wang Quan becomes increasingly paternalistic and controlling. He presents a dangerous combat assignment as thoughtful assistance, grows angry when his arrangements are rejected, and interprets Wang Quan’s distance as resentment over insufficient support. Qian Xiuyue identifies the underlying problem as his treating a friend like a subordinate 6 10 49.
