Background / History
The Elder of Chaos was born before Heaven and Earth opened and possessed Chaos Laws from birth. He ranked among the top ten Great Dao Demon Gods and belonged to Hongjun’s generation, making the Three Pure Ones and other later Sages his juniors 718 1041.
The Heaven-Opening battle severely wounded him and damaged his companion treasure, the Chaos Bead. Over countless ages, he worked to restore the bead and develop the world within it into the foundation of his cultivation 717 718.
During the Dao-Devil War, he joined Hongjun and other Demon Gods, including Daoist Yin-Yang and Daoist Yang Mei, against Demon Ancestor Luohu. Afterward, he disappeared into the Outer Chaos Region. Beings in the Primordial World assumed that he had died in the war 717.
He left the Chaos Bead concealed in Chaos so that its internal world could continue growing. While he searched deeper Chaos for opportunities, Gu Changqing discovered the bead, entered its world, and absorbed its origin, triggering their enduring feud 717 718.
Appearance
- Build: An aged, somewhat stooped figure who can appear indistinguishable from an ordinary old man 1072 1106.
- Eyes: Chaos-colored pupils containing imagery of destruction and rebirth 1040.
- Clothing: Daoist robes; after his defeat over the Chaos Bead, they are tattered and stained with divine blood 871.
- Presence: Usually associated with immense Chaos Qi and destructive laws. After learning the Taisu True Exposition, he can outwardly appear without an obvious aura while Heavenly Dao laws withdraw from his vicinity 1072.
Personality
The Elder of Chaos is intensely proud of his antiquity, rank, and innate command over Chaos. Being addressed as a junior enrages him enough to attack Taisu despite sensing the stranger’s unfathomable power. Once he recognizes Taisu’s identity, however, he apologizes and adopts a deferential manner 1041 1042.
His attachment to the Chaos Bead extends beyond ownership: it is his companion treasure and the basis of his cultivated world. Its loss, together with public humiliation, severely damages his Dao heart. Gu Changqing’s indifference repeatedly provokes him into uncontrolled anger, threats, and renewed revenge schemes 866 868 871 914.
He initially feels genuine sorrow and outrage at Hongjun’s proposal to strip the fallen Demon Gods of their origins, recognizing the cruelty inflicted on their own kind. Nevertheless, he ultimately participates in the plundering and attempts to suppress its public exposure 844 845 851.
Despite his volatility, he can recognize an unfavorable position. He stops fighting when Houtu and Hongjun deter him, acknowledges that rage alone cannot close the gap with Gu Changqing, and eventually questions whether his alliance with Hongjun has led him away from his proper path 866 955 1040.
Abilities & Skills
Chaos Laws
His innate Great Dao allows him to manipulate Chaos Qi, destructive forces, and the underlying laws of Chaos 717 939.
- Colossal palms: Condenses Chaos into enormous attacking hands. One palm contains the birth and destruction of countless worlds 742 1109.
- Chains of Order: Forms rune-covered chains from his own Chaos Laws, capable of rupturing the Outer Chaos Region and threatening a Sage’s origin and Dao foundation 1041.
- Large-scale disruption: His movements disturb Chaos across hundreds of millions of miles and incorporate existing storms into his attacks 720.
- Domain limitation: He concludes that the Primordial World suppresses his Chaos Laws because Heaven, Earth, and Humanity hold supremacy there 955.
- Counters: Gu Changqing absorbs his Chaos Giant Hand with Chaos Laws of his own; Taisu effortlessly unravels his Chain of Order into powerless origin radiance 939 1041.
Chaos Storm Creation
He uses his Chaos Laws as a catalyst to gather and concentrate the destructive power of Chaos 914 924.
- Fuses 36,000 Chaos Storms using accumulated Chaos baleful qi 924.
- Proposes unleashing the resulting storm inside the Primordial World as a “measureless measureless calamity” 914.
- The scheme risks collapsing the world’s karma and endangering the Profound Gate and its Sages as well as his enemies 915.
- Expenditure of his own origin and the storm’s backlash leave him needing prolonged recovery 955 1040.
- Later summons a storm described as exceeding the earlier one in scale 1168.
Taisu True Exposition
A supreme Dao art personally imparted by Lord Taisu. It pierces acquired illusions and reveals the innate essence of things 1043 1045.
- Enhanced perception: Clarifies the structure of laws, order, and Dao rhythms, allowing him to investigate otherwise mysterious techniques 1045.
- Return to Ruins: Dissolves cultivated divine abilities and Dao arts rather than merely meeting them with greater force 1111 1171.
- Formation suppression: Breaks Tongtian’s Immortal-Slaying Sword Array and neutralizes the combined attacks of Tongtian, Nuwa, and Houtu 1116.
- Treasure-power neutralization: Dissolves the divine might unleashed through the Heaven-Opening Divine Axe 1171.
- Dao Seal: Seals the surrounding space and suppresses the target’s ability to exercise cultivation by denying the foundation of their existence 1173.
- Limit of mastery: Initially comprehends only its threshold. Taisu regards the inheritance’s benefits as borrowed power rather than the Elder’s own foundation 1045 1154.
- Loss of exclusivity: Gu Changqing later demonstrates the same art, overturning the Elder’s belief that his inheritance is unique 1241 1242.
Heavenly Dao Authority
Through jointly refining Heavenly Dao authority with Hongjun, he obtains part of the standing and authority of a Heavenly Dao Representative 1040.
- Uses the Heavenly Dao’s mysteries and origin to accelerate his cultivation 732.
- Receives a Heavenly Dao blessing that augments his combat strength 862.
- Can perceive events throughout the Primordial World even from the Outer Chaos Region upon awakening 1040.
- His authority is explicitly less complete than Hongjun’s 1040.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Chaos Bead — His companion Chaos Supreme Treasure and strongest early trump card. He develops a world inside it, lends Yuanshi temporary control, and later stakes it against Gu Changqing. After his defeat, Houtu severs his bond with the bead, and Gu Changqing gives it to her 717 777 861 865 866.
- Chaos Bell — A Heaven-Opening Supreme Treasure acquired during his time in Chaos and stored within the Chaos Bead. He discovers it missing and blames Gu Changqing; later passages identify it as having been stolen by Gu Changqing 724 777.
- Chaos greatsword — A genuine Chaos Spirit Treasure bearing profound Dao patterns, used in battle alongside Hongjun and the Saints 746.
- Heaven-Opening Divine Axe — Seized from Gu Changqing after neutralizing its power. He works with Hongjun to erase Gu Changqing’s imprint, but their refining power secretly strengthens that imprint. Their later belief that the axe is fully controlled is undermined when Gu Changqing neutralizes it with the Taisu True Exposition 1175 1180 1181 1236 1241.
Relationships
- Hongjun — Old wartime ally and principal partner against Gu Changqing. Hongjun recruits him with an offer of equal Heavenly Dao authority, but their alliance deteriorates through blame, suspicion of betrayal, and the Elder’s concern that Hongjun is becoming a Heavenly Dao puppet 717 722 955 1242 1254.
- Gu Changqing — Archenemy. Their feud begins with the plundering of his Chaos World’s origin and grows through repeated defeats, exposure of the Demon God desecration, and the loss of the Chaos Bead 718 851 866.
- Lord Taisu — Teacher of the Taisu True Exposition. The Elder reveres him after learning his identity; Taisu secretly hopes to use him as a means of escaping confinement 1042 1043 1045 1154.
- Yuanshi — Junior ally who persuades him to lend the Chaos Bead for a trap against Gu Changqing. Later pleads with him not to abandon the Profound Gate 777 955.
- Laozi, Jieyin, and Zhunti — Junior allies who initially welcome his support as a chance to restore the Profound Gate’s prestige. He later disparages Laozi and Yuanshi after their failed Chaos Storm scheme 724 955.
- Tongtian — Enemy and Gu Changqing’s master. The Elder threatens his life to draw Gu Changqing out of seclusion, then uses the Taisu True Exposition against his sword techniques 1108 1109 1116.
- Nuwa and Houtu — Opposing Sages who protect Gu Changqing. Houtu severs his connection to the Chaos Bead and deters his retaliation; he later suppresses both alongside Tongtian 865 866 1116.
- Luohu — Former wartime enemy from his own era. Their shared history leaves him with mixed feelings about Luohu’s later rise, but his alliance with Hongjun makes that rise unwelcome 717 1204.

- After Hongjun admits defeat, senses his diminishing humanity and suspects that the Heavenly Dao is reclaiming his selfhood. He leaves Zixiao Palace for Chaos 1254.
