Background / History
Service at Court
Huang Feihu holds the title of King of Wucheng and is responsible for defending the royal palace. His younger sister, Huang Yu, is one of Di Xin’s consorts; Di Xin identifies her marriage as an arrangement made by his predecessor to placate the conservative faction 3 35.
Di Xin regards Huang Feihu as a potential future defector. His knowledge of the original story tells him that Huang Feihu initially served King Zhou loyally, but rebelled after the Daji-bewitched king molested his wife. This is an anticipated fate, not an event shown occurring in the supplied chapters 3.
Clash with Zheng Lun
Ordered to execute Su Hu, Huang Feihu reluctantly obeys despite sympathizing with the condemned man and wishing to avoid the resulting karma. Before he can thrust his spear into Su Hu’s chest, Zheng Lun storms the palace to protect his master. Huang Feihu immediately challenges the intruder and withstands his weapon attacks, but Zheng Lun’s nasal white lights and cold snort knock him unconscious 3.
After Di Xin pardons Su Hu and rewards Zheng Lun, Huang Feihu becomes uneasy about his own position. Zheng Lun’s appointment as the king’s personal attendant leaves him feeling that his military authority is being divided 4 5.
Huang Feihu also joins the officials urging Di Xin to withdraw his rejection of human sacrifice. When ordered to execute Weizi and Jizi as offerings to Heaven, he instead kneels silently and refuses to act; Di Xin gives the task to Zheng Lun 7 8.
Loss of the Five-Colored Divine Ox’s Loyalty
At the agricultural demonstration outside Chaoge, Huang Feihu encourages Bi Gan to hold Di Xin to their wager. Di Xin then demands his Five-Colored Divine Ox to pull the Curved-Blade Plow. Huang Feihu protests that she is a divine mount rather than a draft animal, but yields under threats from Di Xin and Zheng Lun 14 15.
The ox receives Heavenly Dao merit for participating in the successful demonstration. Her subsequent affection for Di Xin provokes intense jealousy in Huang Feihu. After reclaiming two thousand mu of land, she chooses to follow the king rather than return to her owner; Huang Feihu coughs blood and collapses 16 17.
Di Xin sends her back, but permits her to visit the palace and ultimately orders her to serve as his mount during the day while eating and sleeping at Huang Feihu’s home. By the Deer Terrace inspection, Huang Feihu is still gathering tender grass for her, despite receiving kicks when he attempts to stroke her 18 50.
Palace Plot and Forced Loyalty
Huang Feihu attends Bi Gan’s meeting to discuss forcing Di Xin to mend his ways. Initially shocked by the prospect of treason, he nevertheless participates in preparations, asking Jiang Ziya to demonstrate abilities capable of countering Zheng Lun 30 31.
He is absent when Di Xin kills Yang Ren and the Fang brothers. After the uprising fails, Huang Feihu and Bi Gan arrive claiming to have come to rescue the king. Their declaration that they deserve death is a coordinated attempt to obtain pardon, but Di Xin insists that they fulfill it 37 42 43.
Both men eventually admit that they want to live. Di Xin spares them, then falsely credits them with exposing the uprising and betraying its leaders. This turns the surviving soldiers against them and threatens their standing among the conservatives. Unable to escape the accusation, Huang Feihu publicly professes devotion to the king 43 44.
Di Xin assigns him and Bi Gan to supervise the defeated soldiers building Deer Terrace, teach them praises of royal mercy, and pay for their food. Huang Feihu remains at the construction site when Di Xin later reorganizes its workforce 44 50.
Appearance
- Build: Burly; his fall after Zheng Lun’s attack is compared to a small mountain toppling 3.
- Eyes: Described as fierce or tiger-like, often filled with tears during the dispute over his ox 15 16.
- Distress: After losing the ox’s exclusive loyalty, he appears pale, hollow-eyed, and exhausted, with little of his former kingly bearing 17 18.
Personality
Huang Feihu initially treats obedience as a subject’s duty even when he disagrees with an order. He apologizes to Su Hu before attempting to kill him, yet reacts without hesitation when Zheng Lun breaches the palace. His obedience has limits: he refuses to execute the royal relatives and later joins the movement to force Di Xin’s hand 3 8 30.
His attachment to the Five-Colored Divine Ox is exceptionally strong. He protests her use for farm work, grieves over her affection for Di Xin, and continues caring for her despite rejection. Di Xin deliberately exploits this attachment to provoke jealousy and resentment 15 17 18 50.
Faced with death, Huang Feihu abandons his performance of self-sacrificing loyalty and begs to continue serving Great Shang. He also fears the reputational consequences of being portrayed as a man who betrayed his political allies 43 44.
