Background / History
Gu Mingli began cultivating in his thirties. At seventy-three, he remained at the eighth Qi Refining layer, with his prospects of reaching Foundation Establishment uncertain. Wu Zheng believed that, unless Gu soon reached the ninth layer, he likely had little time left to live 17 21.
He managed the Jade Spring Commerce Association, Jade Spring Mountain’s shop in a cultivators’ market owned by Biluozong. Before Xu Qingtong arrived, Gu and Wu Zheng were its only staff. Having previously reported a shortage of help, Gu accepted Xu when Sun Biao brought him to the shop and presented him as a distant relative 17.
After surviving the Mist Valley Trial, Xu returned to the shop as a new disciple of Gloomwind Valley. Knowing that Gu had been stalled at the eighth Qi Refining layer for years, Xu brought him a Realm-Breaking Pill obtained during the trial. Gu accepted it in exchange for helping Xu locate gengjin stone, then arranged the material’s purchase before Xu left for his new sect 51 52.
Appearance
- An elderly man who appears to be in his sixties or seventies 17.
- Often remains upstairs rather than attending the sales floor; his room is on the third floor 21 29.
Personality
Gu combines commercial shrewdness with genuine concern for his employees. He rewards Xu Qingtong’s useful work, covers the assistants’ living expenses, and eventually helps Xu obtain protective artifacts without accepting the two hundred talismans offered in thanks. His care gives Xu a sense of home and makes him regard Gu as an elder rather than merely an employer 18 20 22 24 32.
He is cautious about dangerous cultivation and combat. He warns Xu against reckless divine-sense probing, attempting advanced body tempering, and trusting fellow trial participants. Nevertheless, once Xu firmly chooses to pursue the Mist Valley Trial, Gu supports his decision 21 23 27 31.
His humor can seem stingy: after Xu wins a trial place, he jokingly leaves Wu Zheng to pay for the celebratory wine. When Wu returns with the food and drink, however, Gu gives him two spirit stones 31.
His reserved manner conceals a warm heart. Although excited by Xu’s Realm-Breaking Pill, he refuses to accept such a valuable elixir without compensation. He later declines Xu’s offer of twenty middle-grade spirit stones, saying that the pill has already helped him enormously and that Xu will need the stones himself. At their subsequent farewell, his eyes grow damp, and he promises that Xu can return whenever he needs help 51 52.
Abilities & Skills
Cultivation and Divine Sense
- Possesses eighth-layer Qi Refining cultivation 17 21.
- Detects Xu Qingtong’s intrusive divine-sense probe; Xu experiences sharp mental pain and his sense recoils before Gu summons him 21.
- Copies instructions into a jade slip by pressing it to his forehead 21.
- Takes Xu to the competition grounds by flight, though the means is not specified 24.
- Remains stalled at the eighth layer when Xu returns from Mist Valley; receives a Realm-Breaking Pill intended to help overcome this bottleneck 51.
Appraisal and Artifact Knowledge
- Identifies Xu’s enhanced Fireball Talisman as exceeding the upper grade of the low tier and approaching the lower grade of the middle tier 20.
- Appraises later Fireball Talismans as superior-quality mid-grade talismans comparable in power to the Rain of Fire spell 26.
- Explains that purple wisteria wood armor resists Water Arrow Talismans better than fire attacks: it can withstand six or seven Water Arrow hits, but no more than two of Xu’s mid-grade Fireball hits 24.
- Knows the Goumang Seal’s origin, damage, and unsuccessful repair history from Jade Spring Mountain’s records 24.
- Identifies gengjin stone as a rare, utmost-yang metal-attribute material used to refine treasures, and estimates that a piece offered at auction would fetch at least several thousand spirit stones 51 52.
- Recognizes a high-grade spirit stone and explains the standard exchange ratios: one high-grade stone equals one hundred middle-grade stones, and one middle-grade stone equals one hundred low-grade stones. He notes that high-grade stones are scarce despite their nominal prices and that supreme-grade stones are known to him only through legends 52.
Cultivation Guidance
- Teaches Xu the Qi-Observing Art, allowing him to gauge cultivation without the discourtesy and danger of directly probing others 21.
- Recognizes the Five Elixirs Origin Refinement Art as an ancient method. He doubts its suitability for modern Foundation Establishment, while acknowledging the exceptional abilities ancient methods may grant 22.
- Provides access to the Heavenly Fire Body-Tempering Art, initially insisting that Xu practice only its first level because later levels can be fatal 27.
- Shares lessons from his own experience fighting cultivators and helps Xu refine his selected artifacts 24.
- Tells Xu that Dongfang Jin’s second disciple has reached Foundation Establishment while practicing an ancient cultivation technique, though he does not know whether it is the same method Xu uses 22.
- Explains that middle-grade spirit stones are better than low-grade ones for restoring magic power and breaking through cultivation realms 52.
Shop Management
- Oversees a business selling artifacts, pills, talismans, herbs, and crafting materials, while also buying goods and gathering intelligence 17.
- Delegates routine talisman purchases and payments to Wu Zheng 20.
- Directs Xu to the Myriad Treasures Tower for high-grade talisman materials that his own shop does not stock 26.
- Locates a piece of gengjin stone at the Hundred Refinements Pavilion that is scheduled for auction the following month, then negotiates its direct purchase so Xu need not wait 52.
- Persuades Shopkeeper Lü to provide the purchase’s change as twenty middle-grade spirit stones rather than two thousand low-grade stones, obtaining the more useful denomination for Xu 52.
His initial purchasing terms for Xu’s talismans are:
| Product / Arrangement | Payment | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Initial Fireball Talisman test | Materials supplied as a gift | Xu must produce at least three talismans from ten sheets to qualify for continued material support 19. |
| Regular Fireball Talismans | One spirit stone per ten | The shop supplies materials and receives the finished talismans 19. |
| First enhanced Fireball Talisman | One spirit stone | Kept for conspicuous display in the shop 21. |
| Further mid-grade Fireball Talismans | One spirit stone per five | Offered after Gu appraises the first enhanced talisman 21. |
Relationships
- Xu Qingtong — Employee, talisman supplier, and junior under his care. Gu’s support becomes familial in Xu’s eyes; Xu remains loyal to the shop despite potentially earning more by selling independently 22 31 32. After the Mist Valley Trial, Xu repays his care with a Realm-Breaking Pill and makes another batch of talismans for the shop free of charge. Gu helps him obtain gengjin stone and promises continued assistance when Xu leaves for Gloomwind Valley 51 52.
- Wu Zheng — Shop assistant entrusted with daily business, Xu’s orientation, and talisman payments 17 20.
- Sun Biao — Jade Spring Mountain elder who brings Xu to fill Gu’s staffing shortage. Gu receives him respectfully and acknowledges relying on his support 17.
- Shopkeeper Lü — Shopkeeper of the Hundred Refinements Pavilion with whom Gu negotiates the purchase of gengjin stone and the exchange of Xu’s remaining funds into middle-grade spirit stones 52.

- Orders an extra spirit-stone reward when Xu diversifies into Shield Talismans 20.

- Receives Xu’s farewell before the trial, ending their meeting with a brief warning to take care 32.
Return from Mist Valley and Departure for Gloomwind Valley
- Greets Xu upon his return and asks whether he has joined Biluozong. Xu explains that he chose Gloomwind Valley because he is more interested in alchemy than artifact refining 51.
- Receives a Realm-Breaking Pill from Xu, becoming visibly excited before insisting that he cannot accept it for nothing. Xu asks him to help find gengjin stone in exchange, and Gu agrees to inquire while clarifying that Xu must pay for the material himself 51.
- Finds gengjin stone at the Hundred Refinements Pavilion and warns Xu that buying the rare material outright before its auction may invite an exorbitant price 52.
- Accepts a high-grade spirit stone from Xu to fund the transaction, purchases the gengjin stone, and returns twenty middle-grade spirit stones as change. He refuses Xu’s offer to keep the change as a token of respect 52.
- Becomes emotional when Xu bids farewell before leaving with Guo Tianyu for Gloomwind Valley, and assures him that he can return to ask for help 52.
