Rescue and Early Companionship

Xu Qingtong rescued Xiao Qi during the Mist Valley Trial, finding her in a cave with a large snake coiled around her. He concealed her species from Dongfang Hui because revealing her unusual identity could endanger her life 45 150.

She became both his traveling companion and a combat partner. During his escape from Lin De, Xiao Qi struck the immobilized pursuer from behind. Later that night, she guarded Xu Qingtong and devoured a wandering soul that had tried to drain his yang energy 76.

In the Thousand-Cloud Mountain Range’s ruins, the pair hunted yin souls and defeated an intermediate ghost spirit. Against a Corpse Charm, Xiao Qi identified the Corpse Crystal in its chest as the seat of its consciousness, allowing Xu Qingtong to expose it for her to seize 79 88.

Spirit-Beast Companions and the Devil Realm

After fighting Worryfree Valley cultivators, Xu Qingtong introduced Xiao Qi to Du Siwen as his friend and revealed that she was a Double-Pupiled Bird. He warned Du Siwen that disclosing this identity could bring disaster upon them both 123.

Xiao Qi later accompanied him through the islands and Black Witch Marsh. She warned him of the Feizhu ambush that led to Xizi joining the group, then fought alongside both of them against marsh demon beasts. When a poisoned Water Boa ambushed Xu Qingtong, Xiao Qi and Xizi protected him until he recovered 150 151 185 186.

In the Devil Realm, she assisted Xu Qingtong’s incarnation against the Demon People and killed three tribal chiefs. During the struggle involving the Qingbing Tribe’s mine, she blocked enemy attacks so Luosaide and his forces could escape, suffering injuries herself 336 338.

Freedom and the Name Xu Jingtong

After Xu Qingtong formed his core, he offered to return his companions’ soul blood. Xiao Qi argued that retaining the link allowed them to sense him in unusual environments and declared their willingness to share his life and death. He accepted their decision and promised to support their cultivation and eventual human transformation 368.

Her transformation took place on Juxian Academy’s Back Mountain. During the tribulation, Xu Qingtong taught her the Heavenly Fire Body-Tempering Art, supplied a Soul-Returning Pill, returned her soul blood, and gave her a defensive handkerchief treasure. After she survived, he declared that she was no longer his servant and named her his younger sister, Xu Jingtong 589 590.

Xiao Qi initially wept and tried to restore their former bond by offering her soul blood again. Xu Qingtong refused, wanting her to possess dignity, freedom, and an unrestrained soul. She eventually accepted him as her big brother and formally greeted him as his younger sister 591.

Netherworld Campaign and Sect Defense

After reading military books in Xu Qingtong’s room, Xiao Qi proposed taking the initiative through small, concealed surprise-attack teams. She then accompanied him in ambushes against Netherworld cultivators, using the Cloudlight Handkerchief to restrain enemies and her inherited art to refine them into Dark Azure Elixirs 593 594 595 597 598.

Over three months, the pair ambushed thirteen Body-Shaping cultivators. At the battle outside Anyang Sect, Xiao Qi helped reverse the fighting and refined the enemy commander after Xu Qingtong trapped him with the Heaven and Earth Bowl 606 610.

She subsequently joined Xiao Bai in the coordinated attack on Tianji Zi. Later, when Xu Qingtong left to collect his family and companions, she remained at the Tianhua Sect to support Dong Yunxiao, its only Nascent Soul cultivator at the time 617 625.

Appearance

Xiao Qi develops from a drab gray chick into a brilliantly colored divine bird, then assumes the appearance of a young woman of seventeen or eighteen 45 114 590.

• Eyes: Born with double pupils. Five-colored light flickers within them by the middle of the third tier 123 185.
• Second-tier form: Resembles a Vermilion Bird, with phoenix-like coloring and some resemblance to an azure luan. Her proud cry sounds like a phoenix’s 114 123.
• Third-tier form: Has five-colored plumage, a small fleshy crest resembling a hen’s comb, and two ball-shaped crest feathers beside it 185.
• Sixth-tier form: Regrows fiery red body feathers and seven-colored tail feathers after her fiery advancement 461.

Personality

Xiao Qi is fiercely loyal to Xu Qingtong. She regards his rescue of her as a life-saving debt and sees their fortunes as inseparable. Her attachment is strong enough that she initially interprets the end of their master-servant relationship as something to resist, despite his intention to grant her freedom 150 368 591.

She is proud, teasing, and assertive with the other spirit beasts. She immediately positions herself as Xizi’s “big sister,” regularly mocks Xiao Bai’s foolishness, and beats him when he tries to claim seniority after reaching the sixth tier. After his transformation, she continues correcting his speech and habits 151 394 454 613.

Her confidence is tempered by judgment. She refuses to recklessly attack a vastly stronger Netherworld cultivator despite her racial advantage against ghosts. She also turns down additional cultivation elixirs when she fears that rapid advancement could undermine her foundation 584 598.
