Background / History
Nalan Yanran grew up as a celebrated young lady of the Nalan Family in the Imperial Capital, admired by numerous boys and protected by her family’s standing. Yun Yun recognized her talent and accepted her as a personal disciple. The Misty Cloud Sect’s elders subsequently approved of her and began grooming her to become the next sect master 28 31.
Her grandfather arranged her engagement to Xiao Yan while she was little. Yanran rejected the idea that her family could determine her future, regarding the engagement as something she had to remove from her life. With Yun Yun’s permission, she traveled to the Xiao Clan to seek its dissolution 28 29.
Appearance
Nalan Yanran is described as a beautiful, fair-skinned girl with a slender waist and a graceful figure. Her initially indifferent expression gives her a cool, aloof bearing 28.
- Clothing: Introduced in a fitted, moon-white robe with a neatly cinched waist; later wears jade green 28 35.
- Jewelry: A diamond-shaped earring on her left earlobe 28.
- Hair: Wears a long ponytail during her visit to the Nalan Family’s Beast-Taming Arena 43.
- Features: Willow-leaf brows and soft pink lips 29 41.
Personality
Yanran is fiercely independent and refuses to accept an arranged marriage, even when her father insists that marriage belongs under parental authority. She is equally protective of Yun Yun and the Misty Cloud Sect: although she accepts responsibility for seeking to end her engagement, she refuses to tolerate insults toward her teacher or sect 29 30 44.
Her pride initially makes her dismissive of Xiao Yan’s inability to cultivate and unwilling to acknowledge defeat against Xiao Qian. Humiliation can quickly overturn her outward composure, provoking angry challenges and reckless attacks. Nevertheless, she returns to fight despite repeated losses, displaying enough determination to make Xiao Qian reassess her 29 31 35 36.
Her later conduct shows a distinction between defending her freedom and denying responsibility for her actions. She apologizes for failing to consider the humiliation inflicted on the Xiao Clan, and later acknowledges that Xiao Qian had reason to defend its dignity. She insists that she will recover her own lost honor through strength rather than excuses 29 44.
Abilities & Skills
Wind Dou Qi
Yanran uses Wind Dou Qi in combat, visibly coiling it around her sword when preparing her strongest documented sword technique 31.
- Reaches Four-Star Dou Zhe through intensive sparring 36.
- Acknowledges that Xiao Qian’s Dou Qi intensity exceeds hers before their first duel, but argues that raw Dou Qi alone does not determine victory 30.
Willow Floss Movement Technique
A movement Dou Technique that makes her movements light and elusive, resembling drifting willow floss. She has entered its introductory level while still a Dou Zhe, surprising Ge Ye 31.
- Supports rapid approaches, retreats, and changes of direction 31.
- Ge Ye judges that a Dou Zhe without a movement technique would normally struggle to touch her while she uses it 31.
- Xiao Qian counters it by predicting her true direction and taking the shortest route to intercept her; he does not need a movement Dou Technique of his own 31.
Wind-Form Spirit-Splitting Sword
A Mid-Level Mystic Rank Dou Technique that produces an emerald sword phantom beside her through Wind Dou Qi 31.
- Demonstrates her ability to use an advanced technique at the Dou Zhe realm 31.
- Fails to suppress Xiao Qian during their first duel, even though he restricts himself to Ninth Stage Dou Qi 31.
Close-Quarters Combat
Repeated sparring significantly improves Yanran’s reactions and familiarity with Xiao Qian’s fighting patterns 41.
- Uses swift kicks, twisting counters, and clean follow-up movements 41.
- After dozens of bouts, she becomes substantially harder to subdue when Xiao Qian does not overwhelm her with his Dou Qi and physical strength 41.
- Their documented bout aboard the flying magical beast lasts nearly an hour, but still ends in her defeat 41.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Emerald Long Sword — Retrieved from her Storage Ring before her first duel with Xiao Qian; its blade emits a faint, cold gleam 30.
- Storage Ring — Holds her sword and resources she offers as payment for sparring, including pills, cultivation methods, and Dou Techniques 30 35.
- Healing pills — Help her recover between challenges. After her second defeat, she takes one with tea supplied by Xiao Xun’er 32 35 36.
Relationships
- Yun Yun — Teacher and Misty Cloud Sect Master. Recognizes Yanran’s talent, takes her as a personal disciple, and grooms her as a successor. Yanran fiercely defends her reputation 28 30 31.
- Nalan Su — Father. Opposes her unilateral decision to end the engagement and clashes with her insistence on choosing her own future 44.
- Nalan Jie — Grandfather and head of the Nalan Family. Arranged her childhood engagement to Xiao Yan 28.
- Xiao Yan — Former fiancé. Her public demand to dissolve their engagement prompts him to repudiate her and vow to confront the Misty Cloud Sect three years later. Yanran maintains that she would not marry someone she does not know, even if his talent had remained intact 29 36.
- Xiao Qian — Recruitment target, opponent, and recurring sparring partner. Their initially hostile encounters develop into sustained training; she experiences brief feelings of fondness and later protects him from her father’s aura. No romantic relationship is established in the supplied chapters 28 31 36 41 44.
- Xiao Xun’er — Initially intimidates Yanran into abandoning her recruitment attempt, later helps her recover, and then warns her against coveting Xiao Qian. Yanran resents the warning and becomes curious about Xun’er’s background 29 35 36.
- Ge Ye — Misty Cloud Sect deacon whom she addresses as “Martial Uncle.” Accompanies her, intervenes during her first beating, and delivers her letter to Xiao Qian 28 31 32.
- Yun Leng — Misty Cloud Sect Great Elder. Orders her to recruit Xiao Qian and supplies a sentence to use privately if Xiao Qian refuses; she does not know its meaning 33.
- Nalan Nan — Family elder who watched her grow up and treats her affectionately. She asks him to slaughter the family’s Mighty Demon Bull to obtain its skeleton 43.
- Unnamed senior brother — Accompanies her delegation but becomes jealous of Xiao Qian. Yanran grows disgusted with his interference and rejects his attempt to dictate her family affairs 41 42.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Xiao Clan Visit and Broken Engagement
- Yanran approaches Xiao Qian with an unexpected invitation to join the Misty Cloud Sect. Her presence also causes a brief, unexplained resonance among his nine dantians 28.
- Xiao Xun’er’s intimidation halts the recruitment attempt. Ge Ye then publicly announces the request to dissolve Yanran’s engagement to Xiao Yan 29.
- After Yanran disparages his inability to cultivate, Xiao Yan writes “Repudiated,” marks the paper with his bloody handprint, and declares that he—not Yanran—is rejecting the match. He vows to avenge the humiliation in three years 29.
- Yanran apologizes for not thinking through the consequences, but Xiao Zhan dismisses her and Xiao Qian rejects her invitation 29.
Defeat, Letter, and Recruitment Orders
- After Xiao Qian defeats her accompanying sect disciple, Yanran fights to defend her teacher and sect. Xiao Qian overcomes her movement and sword techniques, then continues beating her after she refuses to concede 30 31.

- Yanran sends Xiao Qian a letter whose contents visibly shake him. When he confronts her, she initially demands that he kneel and apologize, but ultimately reveals Yun Leng’s recruitment instructions after Xiao Qian restrains and threatens her 32 33.
Repeated Challenges and Departure
- Yanran obtains Xiao Qian’s agreement to continued sparring in exchange for three fourth-order magical beast skeletons 35.
- She challenges him every morning for half a month, repeatedly recovering and returning despite defeat. The training culminates in her breakthrough to Four-Star Dou Zhe 36.
- Xiao Qian agrees to visit the Misty Cloud Sect after three more days. During their journey, the pair continue sparring, and Yanran becomes briefly flustered by her growing fondness for him 36 40 41.
Nalan Family Visit and the Mighty Demon Bull
- Yanran brings Xiao Qian home to collect his promised skeletons. Onlookers misinterpret the visit as a possible change of betrothal partner; the stated purpose is repayment for their sparring arrangement 42.
- She obtains the Gluttonous Ape and Fiercewind Eagle skeletons from the family vault, then seeks the Mighty Demon Bull’s skeleton as the third 43.
- Nalan Su confronts her over the broken engagement and the beast. Yanran defends her independence and steps in front of Xiao Qian when her father pressures him with his Dou Ling aura 44.
- After her father forbids using the Nalan Family’s help to handle the bull, Yanran offers to find another source for the remaining skeleton. Xiao Qian instead volunteers to kill it himself, despite her warnings 44 45.
- She witnesses the Fairy Spirit Puppet repel and ultimately kill the bull. Unaware of Xiao Qian’s intervening journey to another world, she questions why the puppet appears alive and how it can perform a Dou Technique; Xiao Qian redirects the conversation toward dinner 46 47 49 50.
