Background / History
Northern Spirit Realm Origins
Sixteen years before Tang Ling reveals the family’s history, the Tang Family lived in the Northern Spirit Realm. Tang Yan’s mother had fled an arranged marriage and met his father. Her family and the family of her intended husband subsequently forced their way into the Tang estate and separated the couple 50.
The attack shattered the Tang Family. Tang Yan’s mother prevented its complete destruction by threatening suicide, but was taken away. His father left to search for her and never sent word back. Fearing further retaliation, the surviving family relocated to Cloud City 50.
Tang Ling states that the attackers from Tang Yan’s maternal family possessed strength beyond Heaven Tier. He keeps these events from his grandson until Tang Yan’s achievements convince him that the family has hope again 50.
Decline in Cloud City
Despite remaining one of Cloud City’s four great lineages, the Tang Family ranks last at the beginning of the story. Its missing middle generation and Tang Yan’s reputation as a wastrel leave its future dependent on Tang Ling 2 3 12.
Rival lineages openly covet its holdings, but Tang Ling’s willingness to retaliate with the family’s full strength discourages direct attacks on his grandson. Even the City Lord’s Residence would suffer heavily in an unrestricted conflict 3.
The family offers its warriors better terms than competing lineages, yet its uncertain future makes recruitment difficult. Prospective followers consider established rivals such as the Liu Family safer patrons 14.
Organization and Members
| Member | Position | Details |
|---|---|---|

| Tang Yan | Young master and direct-line heir | Reorganizes the guards, supplies cultivation pills, improves the family’s sword technique, and represents it at the Mid-Autumn Gathering 13 23 48. |
| Uncle Mo | Steward and senior fighter | Advises Tang Ling, protects Tang Yan, and commands the assault on the Four Seas Gang 14 40 41. |
| Mo Yanjun | Guard captain | Retains command at Tang Yan’s request. His publicly known strength is Yellow Tier Fifth Grade 23 40. |

| Tang Shengping | Business manager | Oversees cloth shops in western Cloud City and warns that repeated absence from the gathering could undermine subordinate lineages’ confidence 39. |

Authority and Obligations
- Authority token: Tang Yan uses the family token to compel the guards to assemble and accept his orders 12.
- Family law: Tang Ling places Tang Yan’s cultivation under a First-Level Gag Order before the Mid-Autumn Gathering, threatening punishment for disclosure that day 40.
- Allied-lineage pact: The family promises to advance and retreat with its allies, sharing both glory and disgrace 41.
- Guard incentives: Tang Yan initially promises tripled wages for reaching Yellow Tier, along with pills and opportunities for guards’ children. Chang Tie’s actual reward raises his pay from 50 to 200 taels per month 13 22.
Martial Arts and Resources
Cloudflow Sword
The family’s signature sword art suffers from missing portions of its cultivation method. Tang Yan uses his sparring match with Lin Dongxue to identify flaws and refine its movements 20.
- Its movements flow like clouds and water, slipping through openings while concealing numerous transformations 48.
- Tang Yan’s revised version blocks Lin Dongxue’s Yellow Tier attack while he is still at Origin Tier Eighth Grade 20 21.
- Rival elders later recognize that its power has risen a full rank above its original grade 48.
- Tang Ling only notices the modifications during Tang Yan’s fight with Liu Xing; the context does not establish that the improved version has been taught throughout the family 48.
Other Martial Resources
- Tang Family Fist: Practiced collectively by the 120 newly advanced Yellow Tier soldiers 28.
- Flame Burst Palm: A technique recorded on a jade slip examined by Tang Yan after Tang Ling reveals the family’s history. Its three forms are Flame Blaze Palm, Flame-Shattering Palm, and Burst-Shattering Palm, each stronger than the previous form 50.
- Cultivation pills: Tang Yan supplies First Spirit Pills to help the guards advance and encourages Mo Yanjun to aim for Heaven Tier 23 29.
Holdings and Facilities
- Family estate: Contains a main hall, rear courtyards, Tang Yan’s residence, and Drill Grounds 3 4 12.
- Ancestral hall: Houses a concealed stone door opened by striking a wall thirteen times 50.
- Cloth shops: Operated in western Cloud City under Tang Shengping 39.
- Four Seas Gang spoils: Cartloads of valuables are seized after the gang’s destruction 42.
Major Arcs
Guard Reorganization
Tang Yan confronts the guards over their stagnant cultivation and unchanging routines. To earn their respect, he carries a 120-jin log for 130 meters without true qi, then offers advancement rewards and demands harsher training 13.
All 120 men accept. The new regimen includes ten laps carrying 350-jin logs, with lunch withheld for failure or delay. Tang Yan trains alongside them with increasing intensity, turning their initial disdain into loyalty 13 14 22.
Madam Lin’s Birthday Banquet
The Liu, Qin, and Wu families coordinate extravagant gifts to make the Tang Family’s intended offering—ten first-tier upper-grade pills—look inadequate. Tang Yan counters with a Youth-Preserving Pill, which Wu Xuan authenticates as genuine and refined at a level of at least fourth tier 33 34.
Ge Ming also publicly defends the family during the banquet dispute. The Tang Family leaves with greater prestige and the City Lord’s Residence’s goodwill, buying time for its recovery 33 35.
Destruction of the Four Seas Gang
The Four Seas Gang attacks a northern-city Liu lineage affiliated with the Tang Family—not the rival great Liu Family—and causes Tang casualties. Tang Yan identifies the attack as an attempt to force the family into either a costly battle or abandonment of its allies 40.
With Tang Ling’s approval, he dispatches 120 newly trained guards and ten elite fighters in separate groups under Uncle Mo. The rival Liu Family has secretly reinforced the gang with forty Origin Tier Ninth Grade fighters and fifteen Yellow Tier experts 40 41.
The Tang forces destroy the gang in less than two hours, revealing more than 130 Yellow Tier experts. Tang Yan rewards each enemy kill with 100 taels and adds another 500 taels per fighter after the spoils arrive. The victory reassures wavering allies and makes the rival Liu Family reconsider killing him outright 40 42.
Mid-Autumn Gathering
The Tang Family attends after two years of absence, countering rumors that it has no worthy successors. Wu Xuan and Ge Ming bring the Wonderful Elixir Workshop to sit with the family, publicly strengthening its position 41 43.
Tang Yan wins the literary championship, defeats Liu Xing, and reveals Yellow Tier Sixth Grade cultivation. His subsequent performance against the ninth-grade Liu Zhi raises allied confidence even further, although Tang Yan accepts defeat and leaves to resume cultivation 47 48 50.
Relationships
- Liu Family — rival great lineage: Seeks to absorb the Tang Family, repeatedly targets Tang Yan, and backs the Four Seas Gang’s attack. Its schemes shift from killing Tang Yan to crippling him once the Tang military expansion becomes public 6 23 41 42.
- Qin Family and Wu Family: Join the rival Liu Family in public pressure and the coordinated banquet-gift scheme. Their involvement in the gang attack is suspected, rather than confirmed 32 33 40.
- Wonderful Elixir Workshop: Becomes a business partner and public supporter through Tang Yan. His Meridian Tempering Powder agreement brings one million taels upfront and a 30% profit share, while Ge Ming and Wu Xuan openly favor the family at major gatherings 25 33 43.
- City Lord’s Residence: Initially demands an explanation for Tang Yan’s conduct toward Lin Dongxue. His treatment of Madam Lin’s scars and later birthday gift transform the relationship into a source of goodwill and protection 4 17 31 35.
- Northern-city Liu lineage: A subordinate ally whose attacked businesses prompt the Tang Family’s assault on the Four Seas Gang 40 41.
- Zi Yun: A guest welcomed by Tang Ling; stays in Tang Yan’s courtyard and accompanies the family to the Mid-Autumn Gathering 30 43.
