Background / History
Life on Earth
Tang Yan grew up without parents and was raised by his master. He began studying music, chess, calligraphy, painting, martial arts, and alchemical texts at five, entered alchemy at seven, earned the title Little Alchemy King at twenty-four, and became a ninth-rank alchemy grandmaster at thirty-eight 1 16.
His attempt at a forced breakthrough caused the Heaven-Earth Creation Cauldron to explode, destroying his body. Only after awakening in another world did he understand its central secret: assimilating the cauldron’s soul and ultimately making his own body the cauldron 1 2.
The Tang Family’s Past
His new body’s mother had fled an arranged marriage and married his father. Her family and the family of her intended husband forcibly separated the couple and devastated the Tang Family. She prevented the family’s complete destruction by threatening suicide, but was taken away; Tang Yan’s father subsequently left to search for her and never returned 50.
The Tang Family fled the Northern Spirit Realm and concealed itself in Cloud City. Tang Yan’s mother and members of her family possessed strength beyond Heaven Tier, far exceeding the power scale familiar to Cloud City’s cultivators 50.
Rebirth
Tang Yan inherits the body and memories of a sixteen-year-old wastrel with the same name. The original youth had cultivated only to Origin Tier Second Grade before Liu Zhi destroyed his dantian following the scandal involving Lin Dongxue 1.
The ruined dantian unexpectedly meets the Supreme Pill Canon’s requirement to break before rebuilding. The cauldron’s surviving presence in his sea of consciousness gives him a way to cultivate again without obtaining the sixth-rank restorative pill he initially believed necessary 2 3.
Appearance
- Youthful body: Sixteen years old at rebirth 1.
- Clothing: Frequently wears white robes edged with gold, retaining the outward appearance of a wealthy young nobleman 3 32.
- Accessory: Commonly carries a folding fan 3 14 32.
- Bearing: His swaggering, unrestrained gait can still resemble that of the former wastrel, despite his changed conduct 32.
Personality
Tang Yan is calculating, theatrical, and quick-witted. He fabricates a moving childhood-love story to counter accusations concerning Lin Dongxue, disguises an ordinary fan as a magical weapon to distract Liu Yuan, and attributes his recovery and knowledge to a nonexistent secluded master 4 7 17.
His attachment to family is genuine. Having lacked familial affection on Earth, he gradually accepts Tang Ling as his grandfather and treats insults against him as intolerable. By the time he learns his parents’ history, he considers the Tang Family his own rather than merely the family of his borrowed body 16 50.
His fear of remaining vulnerable drives exceptionally harsh training. He pushes himself beyond exhaustion, accepts painful cultivation methods, and develops the family’s guards alongside his own strength. He can acknowledge a loss without abandoning his larger purpose: after fighting Liu Zhi, he leaves the gathering and immediately resumes cultivation 14 22 39 50.
He also enjoys teasing others, particularly Zi Yun, and often responds to danger or frustration with profanity. His flippant manner coexists with practical assistance, including sheltering Zi Yun and refining medicine for her recovery 11 28 31.
Abilities & Skills
Alchemy
Tang Yan retains the knowledge, technique, and endurance of a ninth-rank alchemist, although his new body’s limited true qi restricts what he can produce 1 10 38.
- Refinement: Produces twelve Initial Spirit Pills in three hours while only at Origin Tier Third Grade 10 11.
- Appraisal: Assesses pills by scent and identifies the materials and construction of Ge Ming’s custom cauldron 8 10.
- Diagnosis: Recognizes Ge Ming’s accumulated fire poison from a red gleam in the whites of his eyes 10.
- Formula knowledge: Uses Earth-derived recipes whose ingredients largely correspond to those of his new world 2 24.
- Current limits: Refining one third-tier middle-grade Dantian-Expanding Pill nearly exhausts him and requires a High Spirit Pill during the process 38.
- Recognized quality: Wu Xuan judges the Youth-Preserving Pill’s refinement to be at least fourth tier because its ingredients have fused into a single fragrance 34.
| Medicine | Documented use or effect |
|---|---|
| Initial Spirit Pill / First Spirit Pill | Supports early cultivation and can be taken repeatedly. Tang Yan states that an Origin Tier Ninth Grade user has a ninety-percent chance of entering Yellow Tier; his distributed pills help more than a hundred guards break through 11 24 29. |
| Meridian Tempering Powder | Low-grade first-rank medicine used to repair and temper meridians after strenuous training 14. |
| Ice-Snow Clear-Flame Pill | Third-tier low-grade formula given to Ge Ming; Tang Yan prescribes seven doses to remove his fire poison 10. |
| Scarless Pill | Removes Madam Lin’s facial scars and helps improve relations with the City Lord’s Residence 17 32 34. |
| Youth-Preserving Pill | Presented to Madam Lin with the stated effect of preserving her appearance for twenty years 34. |
| High Spirit Pill | Replenishes Tang Yan’s true qi during cultivation, prolonged combat, and demanding refinement 31 35 36 38. |
| Qi-Restoring Pill | Supplied to Zi Yun to help restore her cultivation 31 38. |
| Dantian-Expanding Pill | Third-tier middle-grade pill made with Spirit Whirlpool Fruit; restructures his dantian into a vortex with greater storage capacity 38 39. |
Supreme Pill Canon
The cultivation method transmitted by the Heaven-Earth Creation Cauldron links martial cultivation with alchemy 2.
- Requires the practitioner to disperse the cultivation within the dantian before rebuilding 2.
- Gives Tang Yan’s true qi an additional ingredient-refining effect and accelerates his pill production 10.
- Ultimately permits the practitioner to use their body as a cauldron; Tang Yan has not reached that endpoint in the documented chapters 2.
- Allows cultivation progress through repeated alchemical exertion, as demonstrated by his breakthrough after refining an entire supply of ingredients 22.
Heaven-Earth Creation Cauldron
The cauldron survives its physical destruction as an internal presence, first encountered in Tang Yan’s sea of consciousness and later active within his dantian 2 11.
- Meridian repair: Automatically sends soothing energy through damaged channels during the Initial Spirit Pill overload 12.
- Protective response: Suppresses disturbed true qi and alleviates much of the damage from Wu Xuan’s accidental palm strike 21.
- Spirit-herb cultivation: Revives Spirit Whirlpool Fruit and houses its growing plant; rejects the ordinary herbs Tang Yan tests 17.
- Beast-core conversion: Refines a third-tier core into pure energy that supports his advancement. A new plant shoot appears afterward, leading him to suspect cores also nourish its herbs 37.
- Unpredictability: Initially consumes his pills’ energy, later stops doing so, and often refuses to respond to deliberate probing 11 14 22.
Heaven-Earth Creation Flame
A deep-blue flame awakened when Tang Yan enters Yellow Tier. The accompanying Fire Control Technique allows him to summon it into his palm 22.
- Improves the success rate of pill refinement and can function as a weapon 22.
- Instantly destroys medicinal herbs during testing 22.
- Burns through Bai Qing’s neck, killing the Heaven Tier expert after Zi Yun has injured him 27.
- Consumes enormous amounts of true qi: two brief tests empty Tang Yan’s reserves at Yellow Tier First Grade 22.
- Is kept secret to avoid attracting covetous attention; Tang Yan explains Bai Qing’s death as the work of a single-use treasure 27 38.
Cloudflow Sword
Tang Yan repairs and improves the Tang Family’s sword technique by studying its flaws while sparring with Lin Dongxue 20.
- Turns an initially defensive fight into effective counterattacks against her Origin Tier Ninth Grade strength 20.
- Its modified version is recognized as a full rank more powerful than the original technique 48.
- Used to kill the exhausted Nether Leopard and overwhelm Liu Xing 36 48.
- Continues improving through exchanges with Zi Yun 38.
Phantom Shadow Steps
An evasive movement technique whose steps can be redirected into any of eight directions 35.
- Progresses from repeated falls to coordinated movement through sustained practice 35.
- Improves dramatically during the nearly eight-hour pursuit by the Nether Leopard 36.
- Compensates for the beast’s superior speed through nimble changes of direction 36.
- Remains short of confirmed minor mastery after the encounter 36.
Extreme Six Forms
A training method that repeatedly exhausts and replenishes true qi to strengthen cultivation 29.
- Works alongside weighted exercise and medicinal recovery 14 29.
- Becomes sustainable for twenty-five repetitions per session after the vortex dantian forms, compared with twenty beforehand 39.
Flame Burst Palm
A complex martial technique left by Tang Yan’s mother and received through a jade slip. Tang Yan studies its contents, but has not demonstrated it in combat 50.
- Contains Flame Blaze Palm, Flame-Shattering Palm, and Burst-Shattering Palm.
- Each successive form is several times more powerful than the preceding one.
- Its intricacy rivals or exceeds advanced cultivation methods he encountered on Earth 50.
Perception, Tactics, and Leadership
- Soul perception: Detects people following him through Cloud City 15.
- Battlefield analysis: Identifies openings in Bai Qing’s swordplay and directs Zi Yun’s attacks, helping her reverse a disadvantaged fight 26 27.
- Guard training: Combines criticism, personal example, increasing workloads, and financial rewards to win the guards’ loyalty 12 13 14.
- Political strategy: Recognizes how attacks on subordinate lineages and public humiliation could undermine confidence in the Tang Family 40.
- Commercial planning: Turns medicinal knowledge into a longer-term business proposal after an auction house rejects his First Spirit Pills 24 38.
- Literary skill: Advances through the first two rounds of the literary contest, taking first place in its love-themed second round 44 45.
