Background / History

Maimed infancy and adoption

As an infant, Fang Ling had his heart and eyes gouged out and his treasure bones extracted; his entire clan was also slaughtered. His Chaos Saint Body trapped the Devil Ancestor’s Heart, prompting the five prisoners at Cold Mountain Temple to consider killing him. The white-browed old monk instead persuaded them to spare him and offered the protection of the Golden Soul Mantra 2 3 7.

The five agreed to raise him together and teach him their arts. His name came from the characters embroidered in gold thread on his swaddling cloth. For his first five years, he repeatedly dreamed of the mutilation and his attackers’ refusal to spare him 2 3.

Life at Cold Mountain Temple

Fang Ling grew up surrounded by five powerful men with violent histories. He initially trusted the old monk’s claim that the other four were villains, before learning that the monk himself had slaughtered innocents during a period of religious fanaticism 2 5.

His masters recognized his exceptional comprehension as well as his constitution. After he expelled the Devil Heart’s consciousness, they hoped he might eventually surpass White Emperor, who had defeated all five of them 3.

At eighteen, Fang Ling attained the Heavenly Authority Realm and received permission to leave. Before departing, he promised to break the Ten-Directions Annihilation Formation imprisoning his masters. Despite knowing their crimes, he regarded filial devotion to them as his own obligation 7.

Search for his origins

Outside the temple, Fang Ling discovered that his masters’ knowledge of nearby kingdoms and cities was tens of thousands of years out of date. He stayed with Willow City’s Zhao Family and studied their books for over a month to learn about the contemporary world 8 9 11.

He found an account of the Eastern Azure Domain’s foremost cultivation clan, the Fang Family, being destroyed eighteen years earlier. The timing matched his age, leading him to suspect a connection, though the account did not identify the perpetrators or explain the massacre 11.

Appearance

  • Adult appearance: A handsome young man with a striking bearing and an unfathomable air of mystery 7.
  • Eyes: His regenerated eyes appear ordinary at rest but reveal their blood-red form when their power activates 7.
  • Clothing: On leaving the temple, he wears silk made from poisonous silkworms raised by his fat master, making villagers mistake him for a wealthy young master 8.
  • Demon Prison Body: His skin becomes dark red, his musculature grows more pronounced, and his eyes take on a savage appearance 42 45.

Personality

Fang Ling is deeply attached to the five men who raised him. The old monk’s presence gives him security during Zhao Manzi’s violent episode, and his desire to free all five masters survives his discovery of their past atrocities 5 7.

He combines studiousness with caution. He reads day and night to overcome his ignorance of the outside world, conceals his cultivation and techniques, and destroys corpses to prevent others from tracing his forbidden demonic arts. He also reviews his battles in meditation rather than treating victory as the end of learning 9 11 25 27.

His killing can be both calculated and pleasurable. He finds the combined use of the Blood Sword and Taotie Divine Art intoxicating, and admits to himself that repaying the Zhao Family is partly an excuse for attacking the Qin Family. Nevertheless, he values genuine kindness and later regards the White Family as true friends 10 11 39.

As a leader, he prioritizes obedience but invests heavily in his followers. He distributes captured cultivation resources and demon crystals because stronger subordinates can better serve his goals 16 36 50.

His early views of women are shaped by Flower Thief’s warnings, leaving him romantically inexperienced and inclined to avoid attachment. His encounter with Emperor Shao exposes his ignorance of the Scent-Stealing Finger’s effects 7 10 39 48.

Abilities & Skills

Chaos Saint Body and Undying Heart

His innate physique, strengthened by the Devil Ancestor’s Heart—also called the Undying Heart—provides extraordinary growth potential and regeneration 7 30.

  • Regenerates after being pierced by Jin Buhan’s spear and after Abbess Purple Bamboo crushes him into pulp 25 44.
  • Survives the Death-Dealing Awl penetrating his forehead 46.
  • Can still be burned, injured, immobilized, or exhausted; the deepest astral winds of Windstone Gorge exceed his endurance 35 36 44.

Blood Eyes and Spatial Distortion

His regenerated blood eyes can distort space to neutralize incoming attacks 7 35.

  • Counters the Fairy of the Li River’s Flame Rain Meteor 35.
  • His masters describe the potential to unravel attacks or banish enemies into the endless void; this is an assessment of his potential, not a demonstrated feat in these events 3.

Galaxy Boundless Fist

A supreme body-refining fist art inherited from Zhao Manzi and the Galaxy Sect 2.

  • Its second level destroys the Lost Ancient Mine’s guardian puppets 24.
  • His chapter 33 advancement makes him strong enough to cultivate its third level 33.
  • The fifth level is described as capable of shattering distant stars, but Fang Ling has not demonstrated it 24.

Blood Sword and Sword Demon’s Techniques

Blood Sword gives solid form to killing intent fused with vital blood. Sacrificing powerful victims strengthens the resulting life-bound weapon 4.

  • Uses Dragon-Slaying, Heaven-Questioning, and Prison-Subduing, the three supreme strikes created by Sword Demon 21 35 48.
  • Tongyuan’s sword soul increases the weapon’s power and preserves the sword paths of previous wielders 35 48.
  • Dense blood baleful energy produces Dao patterns on the blade; its tangible killing intent can kill weaker cultivators outright 41 42.
  • Human-Sword Unity merges wielder and sword, but may leave Fang Ling gravely wounded or dead from backlash 48.

Taotie Divine Art

A devouring art taught by Zhao Manzi that converts other beings’ life essence into nourishment for Fang Ling’s body 10 42.

  • Uses the Gluttonous Demon Stomach to absorb life essence from the dead 10.
  • Unlocks the Demon Prison Body, greatly increasing physical power while suppressing reason and consciousness 42.
  • Devours the Blood Demon Ancestor’s blood beasts, severing their connection to their creator and turning them into nourishment 45.

Poison Cultivation

The Heavenly Pestilence Cauldron absorbs poisonous creatures and incorporates their toxins into Fang Ling’s body 6.

  • Removes Bai Ying’s poisoning by drawing out a Seven-Colored Heavenly Butterfly pupa 18.
  • Overwhelms Witch Daoist’s poison defenses despite the latter’s early Jade Balance cultivation and extensive experience 42.
  • Delivers poison through the Mysterious Gold Heaven-Piercing Spear against Abbess Purple Bamboo, though she eventually suppresses it 44.

Divine Movement Step

Flower Thief’s movement art grants exceptional speed and supports sudden repositioning 3 24.

  • Enables Fang Ling to move without nearby church experts noticing and to appear behind opponents 14 46.
  • Its second level permits instantaneous movement by shrinking distances; its third is described as capable of reversing time through speed 24.
  • Fang Ling is explicitly still far from the third level and can be immobilized before using the technique 24 44.

Buddhist Divine Arts

The white-browed old monk passes on powerful offensive, defensive, and spatial arts 2 33 44.

  • Golden Soul Mantra: Protects his Divine Soul against shamanic gu poison and the Blood Demon Ancestor’s wife’s soul-targeting music 42 46.
  • Swastika Mantra / Swastika True Art: Produces a golden swastika attack; Fang Ling considers it stronger than his fist art and Sword Demon’s three strikes during the fight with Abbess Purple Bamboo 44.
  • Sarami Heaven: Creates an independent Sarami Realm whose barrier prevents entry and escape 33.
  • Limits: The Death-Seeking Curse still takes hold of his Divine Soul. Trapping Abbess Purple Bamboo’s lotus-pedestal manifestation does not restrain her actual body 42 43.

Heavenly Net Divine Art

Fang Ling cultivates the primary scripture and commands followers who practice the auxiliary scripture 15 16.

  • First level: Temporarily absorbs auxiliary practitioners’ cultivation, at the cost of severe bodily damage 15 16.
  • Second-level potential: Can temporarily raise auxiliary practitioners’ cultivation realms without affecting the primary practitioner; Fang Ling has not been shown mastering this level 16.
  • Heavenly Net Annihilation: Allows the primary practitioner to initiate a combined attack, with auxiliary practitioners contributing power regardless of their location 48.

Fusang Divine Flame

A Fusang sapling growing in his dantian produces golden flames stronger than the Fairy of the Li River’s seed-derived fire 36.

  • Avoids displaying it casually because the Golden Crow Clan would seek to seize the sapling 36.
  • Cannot neutralize the lust-inducing Divine Edict, whose apparent flames are not ordinary fire 46.

Flower Thief’s Other Arts

  • Scent-Stealing Finger: Induces powerful sexual effects, disrupting Emperor Shao and later Abbess Purple Bamboo 38 39 44 46.
  • Nine Extremes Yin-Yang Art: A dual-cultivation method intended to accelerate cultivation and accumulate yin and yang energies 48.
  • Great Yin-Yang Palm: Uses those accumulated energies; Flower Thief states that sufficient reserves can make it stronger than the Swastika Mantra 48.

Supporting Techniques

  • Heaven-Hiding Art: Conceals his cultivation, though an opponent can estimate his realm once he fights 25 35.
  • Plundering Secret Art: Allows him to refine the Mysterious Gold Heaven-Piercing Spear seized from Jin Buhan 25.
  • Refinement Method: Teaches his followers to absorb demon crystals 50.
  • Alchemy limitation: Has no proficiency in pill refining and relies on Dou Qin to produce the Bodhi Vajra Pill 21.
