Background and History

Encounters with the Lost Ancient Mine

In his youth, Bai Xingyou disregarded the family’s ancestral instructions and explored the Lost Ancient Mine. A powerful puppet guarded a sealed hall in its depths. He barely escaped their battle, losing an arm, and thereafter avoided the mine until offering to accompany Fang Ling 22.

Bai Xingyou also fought and wounded a Netherworld Beast at Heavenbreak Mountain. Years later, Bai Jiang and Bai Bo recognized Fang Ling’s mount as that same beast by the scar remaining on its neck 20.

Bai Ying’s Poisoning

Bai Ying’s condition brought numerous physicians to the White Estate, but several died from poisoning while attempting to treat her. The family distributed steamed buns publicly both to accumulate merit for her and to attract someone capable of curing her. Its notice promised a Bodhi Fruit or an equivalent reward 17 18.

Drawn by the reward, Fang Ling examined Bai Ying privately and extracted a Seven-Colored Heavenly Butterfly pupa using his Heavenly Pestilence Cauldron. Dou Qin subsequently confirmed that no toxins remained and prescribed treatment for Bai Ying’s recovery 18 19.

Bai Jiang paid the promised Bodhi Fruit and offered an additional piece of sword-bearing amber. He then persuaded Fang Ling to remain at the estate until Bai Ying could thank him personally 20.

Protecting Fang Ling’s Stay

During Fang Ling’s stay, Tian Quanzi and Zi Sheng attempted to obtain his Bodhi Fruit through an unfavorable offer and threats. Fang Ling killed both inside his guest room. Concerned about the consequences of a renowned physician dying at the estate, Bai Jiang ordered the family to conceal their visit and keep the news under wraps 20 21.

After opening the gifted amber, Fang Ling returned to ask about the Lost Ancient Mine. Bai Xingyou volunteered to guide him and suspected that the mine was also connected to Bai Ying’s poisoning 22.

Bai Ying later thanked Fang Ling in person and developed feelings for him. Bai Jiang urged her not to pursue him, arguing that Fang Ling’s wandering, dangerous life belonged to a world she could not share. She reluctantly agreed to set those feelings aside 27 29.

Reinforcing the Heavenly Net Church

Once Bai Jiang learned that Fang Ling was the Heavenly Net Church’s master, he consulted Bai Bo and Bai Xingyou overnight. They unanimously agreed to assist the church against the Six Harmonies Sect and immediately began gathering forces 30.

Fang Ling departed ahead of the reinforcements and refused to delay his advance until they arrived. By the time the White Family reached the battlefield, he had already killed the opposing army of three hundred thousand. Dou Qin conveyed his thanks, and Bai Jiang led the family’s forces home with her 31 34.

Later Developments

A Heavenly Music Pavilion elder passing through Dragon City heard Bai Ying playing the zither, praised her musical talent, and took her away as a disciple. Bai Jiang described the elder’s cultivation as unfathomable and admitted that refusing might not have been within his power 39.

When Fang Ling next visited on his way to the Blood Marsh, Bai Jiang asked him to deliver an outstanding payment to the Thousand Mechanisms Divine Craftsman. The family had already collected the money, but Bai Jiang and Bai Bo feared they could not safely make the journey themselves 39.

Estate and Treasures

• White Estate — Located one street from the family’s charity platform. It includes reception rooms, guest accommodation, a west courtyard, and a garden pavilion where Bai Ying plays the zither 17 20 27 39.
• Bodhi Fruit — A rare medicinal treasure from the Western Desert Region that directly increases physical strength. Given to Fang Ling as the advertised reward for curing Bai Ying 17 20.
• Sword-bearing amber — Found by Bai Jiang in the Lost Ancient Mine roughly twenty-odd years earlier. The family could not break its outer barrier, and its ancestor warned that an eruption of the contained Sword Qi could destroy the household. Bai Jiang gifted it to Fang Ling partly to establish a connection with him; Fang Ling ultimately extracted the Tongyuan sword soul 20 21 22.
• Clan-protection artifact — Commissioned from a master artifact refiner from the Blood Marsh. Its name and abilities are not given; the remaining payment was due three months after Fang Ling’s later visit 39.

External Relationships

• Fang Ling — Bai Ying’s savior and an honored guest. After obtaining Tongyuan, he explicitly declared himself indebted to the family and offered future assistance. He later regarded its members as true friends because their offer of military aid had been sincere 22 39.
• Heavenly Net Church — Recipient of the family’s reinforcement expedition. Yun Shuiqing considered the White Family’s reserves sufficient to help break the military deadlock 30 31.
• Dou Qin — Physician entrusted with confirming Bai Ying’s cure and supervising her recuperation; returns to Dragon City under the protection of the family’s cultivators 19 34.
