| Seventh Realm | 424 | Ji Xian states that she has recently entered the realm and has not yet secured her footing. Her mountain-based Dharma Form and ability to merge bodily with Jade Splendor Mount Hua are subsequently demonstrated 431 433. |
Background / History
Ji Xian inherited the throne from Southern Mo’s previous sovereign. Her resentful brothers then joined forces to kill her, but she killed them instead. Surviving members of the Ji Clan were imprisoned, leaving the clan so depleted that Ji Xian effectively represented its power alone. This shortage of clan members remained a major weakness compared with the kingdom’s other great clans 444.
According to Bai Qianqian, the Ji Clan ranked last among the Four Great Eminent Clans when Ji Xian was young. She single-handedly stabilized its position, later restraining her temper and tolerating the Sweetwood branch when politically necessary. After more than three centuries of rule, her authority throughout the southern borderlands was described as absolute 412 422.
Childless, she announced that she sought a worthy husband willing to marry into her household. Prominent young talents from all four clans attempted to win her favor, but none satisfied her. Yan Xiu’s public declaration that he would take her into his bed and teach her a wife’s duties nearly severed relations between their clans 412.
Appearance
Ji Xian appears about twenty despite her centuries-long life. She has snow-white skin, long dark hair, and a cool, refined beauty tempered by a perceptive gentleness 453 473.
- Eyes: Deep amber, described as strikingly bright 424.
- Informal attire: Fine gauze robes, sometimes paired with a moon-white skirt and a Jade Orchid pendant 431 433.
- Court attire: Black robes embroidered in gold with the Ji Clan crest; a jade crown secures her hair 439.
Personality
Ji Xian is proud, decisive, and politically calculating. Although known for an iron-handed rule and a formidable temper, she can endure humiliation rather than expose her position prematurely. She initially refuses the Qingqiu Fox Clan refuge because a confrontation with Sweetwood could invite unfavorable royal intervention. Ji Wuji later admires her ability to conceal Breath Soil for a century despite repeated provocations 412 422 424 450.
Her pursuit of Lu Changfeng begins possessively: she confines him, considers taking him by force, and manipulates her trial’s outcome to make him her husband. Once their relationship develops, she becomes openly affectionate, playful, and unusually vulnerable. His refusal to participate in government both disappoints and reassures her, since she recognizes that political involvement might make her regard him as a rival rather than a lover 430 431 434 439.
Her desire for a child and fear of separation remain powerful emotional drives. Nevertheless, she learns to respect Lu Changfeng’s attachments: she does not interrupt his time with Bai Qianqian, accepts his commitment to return home, and agrees to annual visits. She feels envy rather than jealousy toward Luo Qingge and Li Lingyue for having known him earlier 436 438 453.
Abilities & Skills
Jade Splendor Mount Hua Dharma Form
Ji Xian’s Dharma Form is Jade Splendor Mount Hua itself. Her Incarnation Beyond the Body is rooted in the mountain, allowing her to merge with its terrain and command tremendous power within its domain 431 433.
- Moves the mountain’s positions with a thought 431.
- Merges her body into the earth and attacks through enormous earthen hands and palms 433.
- Shatters Zang Tu’s combined body-and-blade attack and hurls him into a mountainside 433.
- Limitation: Her power diminishes drastically outside the mountain’s domain; she cannot unleash the full strength of her merged manifestation while away 431 442.
Earth-Qi Manipulation and Earth Escape
Ji Xian uses earth qi for restraint, defense, and lethal attacks. The Ji Clan also possesses an earth-escape art that makes her difficult to intercept when traveling alone 431 440.
- Binds Lu Changfeng with the mountain’s earth qi 431.
- Raises stone barriers and creates earth spears 438 442.
- Forms chains and cages from condensed earth qi during the Moon Demon’s assassination attempt 450.
- Launches an underground ambush against Sun Demon Ji Ming 452.
- Previously traveled to report her duties alone and in disguise, relying on earth escape to evade interception 440.
Breath Soil Control
Ji Xian has refined Breath Soil into her bonded magical artifact, allowing it to move and change shape at her will. It remains an effective weapon even away from Jade Splendor Mount Hua 440 442.
- Transforms a fist-sized lump into numerous silent spikes harder than Kun metal 440.
- Produces earth spears that kill three attackers at the Wine God Residence 442.
- Expands into a mountain that crushes Moon Demon Xiao Chaochen and his Moonshadow Gauze 450.
- The relic grows upon contact with water or earth; a single grain can become a hill 440.
Formations and Barriers
Ji Xian controls both confinement formations and the mountain’s defenses 430 436.
- Uses the Eight Trigrams Dragon-Locking Formation to hold Lu Changfeng during her husband-selection trial 430 434.
- Watches its interior through a water mirror 430.
- Opens and closes barriers around the Peach Blossom Grove 431 433.
- Activates the mountain-protecting formation to shred incoming birds before they reach Jade Splendor Hall 436.
Equipment / Weapons / Items

- Medicine-vault Jade Key — Gives access to Southern Mo’s medicine vault; she entrusts it to Lu Changfeng during treatment of the poison affecting her household 436.

Relationships

- Bai Qianqian — Fellow lover of Lu Changfeng. Ji Xian initially separates her from him through the trials, but later avoids antagonizing her and permits her to care for him after the assassination attempt 435 436 451.
- Ji Lan — Long-serving official who reports intelligence, carries out Ji Xian’s instructions, and leads the Embroidered Guard against Sun-Eater Alliance hideouts 430 437 439.
- Zhu Xiang — Trusted official who oversees the Qingqiu Fox Clan’s settlement and shares responsibility for Southern Mo during Ji Xian’s absence 426 439.
- Bai Sheng — Loyal guard commander personally promoted by Ji Xian. She is relieved to learn that he survived the attack in which the Moon Demon stole his identity 451.
- Yun Lou — Featherfolk acquaintance who calls her his aunt. She welcomes him after his rescue and supports action against the Alliance that ambushed him 438 439.
- Yan Xiu — Longstanding enemy whose sexual threats and repeated provocations deepen their feud. Ji Xian supports retaliation against his household and takes satisfaction in his public humiliation 412 437 438.
- Wei Qiang and Wei Shuo — Northern Lands allies. Her intervention and Lu Changfeng’s treatment save them at the Wine God Residence, prompting Wei Qiang to pledge an alliance with Southern Mo 442.
- Ji Wuji — Sun-Eater Alliance leader and enemy. He admires her restraint and concealed strength; his eventual death ends the Alliance’s threat in Hongfang 450 476.
Story Role / Major Arcs
The Four Trials and Lu Changfeng’s Courtship
- Learns that the Qingqiu Fox Clan’s divination predicts a benefactor and destined match approaching from the southwest. Although she initially orders the refugees away, the Ji Clan subsequently provides them a settlement in Brocade Screen Valley 424 426.
- Her husband-selection trials involve the zither, board games, incense, and formations. Lu Changfeng enters seeking protection from Yan Xiu rather than marriage 424 426.
- Keeps him inside the Eight Trigrams Dragon-Locking Formation. His decision to cultivate instead of escaping or courting her strengthens her interest 430.
- Does not interfere while he assimilates Ice Chi Dragon Essence over three days, then reveals her mountain-based power and restrains him with earth qi 431.
- Defends him against Zang Tu and the Red Sickle Guard. His killing strike breaks the formation’s Life Gate, fulfilling the outcome she engineered. She declares that passing three trials makes him her husband 433 434.
- Confesses her love and accepts his warning that he will eventually return to the Central Plains 434.
Poisoning and Retaliation
- Protects Jade Splendor Hall with its mountain formation, but a dormant blood-and-qi poison is discovered among the officials who handled the bird carcasses 436.
- Opens Southern Mo’s medicine vault to Lu Changfeng. After refining its medicinal treasures, he neutralizes her latent filthy blood syndrome 436.
- Supports his retaliatory poisoning of Yan Xiu’s household and grants him the promised opportunity to see the Deathless Trees 437 438.
Journey to Jade Pendant City

- Finds Qilin blood in Lu Changfeng’s Heaven-Earth Bag and administers it to cleanse the poison. She then mobilizes Southern Mo against the Alliance and helps ambush Ji Ming 451 452.

- Sends him news of the Featherfolk capital’s fall and the Alliance’s search for an unknown object 473.
- Reunites with him at Jade Splendor Mount Hua. While he kills Ji Wuji, she defeats an assassin lurking on the mountain. With the Alliance collapsing, she accompanies him home to Chang’an 476.
Notable Quotes
“Better to go without than settle for something inferior. If I, Ji Xian, seek a husband, he must naturally be one in ten thousand.” 443
“If I were so easy to deal with—You would never have gotten your turn.” 440
Trivia
