Background / History

Mu Wanqing grew up believing she was an orphan. Qin Hongmian, whom she knew as her master, was the only person who had shown her substantial care before Nalan Sheng. She later learned that Qin Hongmian was her mother and Duan Zhengchun her father; the three acknowledged their relationship at Myriad Calamities Valley 40 42.

Before meeting Nalan Sheng, she swore an oath before her master: the first man to remove her veil and see her face must either die by her hand or become her husband. She also killed the South Sea Crocodile God's disciple, prompting his pursuit of her, while servants of Mandala Manor hunted her separately 38 40.

Appearance

Mu Wanqing is described as an exceptionally beautiful young woman, with smooth, lustrous skin and a graceful figure. Her face is compared to the soft halo of a new moon and snow upon a flowering tree 38 47.

Personality

Mu Wanqing takes her oath seriously: when Nalan Sheng appears reluctant to marry her, her gaze turns cold and she considers killing him. Yet she also refuses to repay his life-saving kindness with murder, explaining why she wants him to become her husband instead 38.

Her guarded manner gives way to shyness and strong attachment after their marriage. She fears abandonment when she wakes without him nearby and is deeply moved when he protects her from her pursuers. She views meeting her husband's needs as a wife's duty and even considers obtaining attendants to help serve him 39 40.

She is openly jealous of his other partners. She secretly pinches him after he kisses A Zhu, but her rivalry with Wang Yuyan is more persistent: Wang Yuyan's beauty and favored position threaten her, while Madam Wang's earlier pursuit of Mu Wanqing adds resentment toward her daughter. Her behavior remains competition for affection rather than excessive retaliation 49 54 55.
