Background / History

Qingshan Town and the Poison Awakening

Xiao Yi Xian lived in Qingshan Town and worked as a physician with the Myriad Medicine Pavilion. During an expedition into the Magical Beast Mountain Range, she treated mercenaries bitten by Crimson Ice Snakes and led the herb gatherers in collecting medicinal plants 10 16.

Seeking to recruit her, Nalan Sheng secretly had a Shadow Ninja place a Crimson Ice Snake in her path. Its bite awakened her Woeful Poison Body. Qiya attempted to administer an antidote but died upon touching her lips. After reading the Seven-Colored Poison Scripture, Xiao Yi Xian recognized her constitution and its potential to cause widespread disaster. Overcome by guilt and fear, she attempted to cut her throat; Nalan Sheng stopped her and carried her to a cave 16 17.

Entering Nalan Sheng’s Service

Nalan Sheng offered a method for controlling her constitution in exchange for her service and protection. Xiao Yi Xian accepted only after he agreed not to force her to harm innocents or commit atrocities. He explained the proposed use of the Netherworld Poison Flame and gave her the Seven-Colored Poison Scripture 18.

Before they left Qingshan Town, Nalan Sheng told her that he had paid Qiya’s parents twenty thousand gold coins and obtained their forgiveness. Relieved, she accompanied him to Wutan City, purchased poisonous materials, and secluded herself to prevent further accidental deaths 18 19.

After providing her with the Eight Spider Lances, Nalan Sheng took her through Black Rock City toward the imperial capital to seek suitable poison-attribute cultivation methods and Dou Techniques 25 26 28 29.

Nalan Jie’s Treatment and Engagement

At the Nalan Mansion, Nalan Sheng introduced Xiao Yi Xian as his future wife and the physician who could remove Nalan Jie’s Brand Poison. She extracted the poison through her Eight Spider Lances, completely clearing his body but leaving herself exhausted 29 30.

Nalan Jie ordered the family to conceal her constitution and obtain suitable techniques for her. Publicly, the family attributed his recovery to a Seventh-Rank Detoxification Pill rather than her poison-devouring ability 30 32.

Xiao Yi Xian settled in the guest room nearest Nalan Sheng’s bedroom and cultivated in seclusion. Nalan Jie formally arranged their engagement, both acknowledging their mutual affection and securing her place in the family. Nalan Yanran subsequently welcomed her as her future sister-in-law 31 32 33.

Personality

Xiao Yi Xian considers treating illness and saving lives her duty. Qiya’s accidental death deeply distresses her, while the possibility of poisoning countless others makes her fear her own future. Even after agreeing to serve Nalan Sheng, she explicitly refuses participation in cruelty or the slaughter of innocents 17 18.

Her concern for others shapes her conduct: in Wutan City, she forbids everyone—including her assigned attendants—from approaching her cultivation courtyard. Once offered a plausible way to survive her constitution’s backlash, she abandons her suicidal intentions and considers compensating Qiya’s family instead 18 19.

Her greatest ambition is to become an alchemist. Unable to meet that profession’s stringent requirements, she became a physician instead; seeing the Alchemist Guild’s members in Black Rock City visibly rekindles her envy 26.

She develops romantic feelings for Nalan Sheng within their first two months together, particularly valuing that he does not reject her because of her constitution. Public affection and being addressed as his future wife or sister-in-law make her blush 22 29 33.
