Background / History
The Medicine Emperor founded the Yao Clan during an ancient golden age in which Dou Di were more numerous than Dou Sheng in the present era. He knew the Xiao Clan’s Xiao Emperor and was also on good terms with the Gu Clan’s ancestor 7 204.
For reasons he himself could not explain, he was reborn in the current age and merged completely with Yao Chen’s soul. This was a fusion rather than possession: both identities, memories, and personalities became part of the resulting individual 7 193.
Yao Chen’s surviving soul had sheltered in a ring after Han Feng and the Soul Hall brought him to ruin. The ring changed hands before reaching Xiao Yan’s mother, who passed it to her son. After awakening inside it, the Medicine Emperor recognized Xiao Yan as a descendant of his old acquaintance and accepted him as a disciple 7 193.
Appearance
- Early form: An illusory soul with translucent hands, able to float out of his ring 7 125.
- Resemblance to Yao Chen: His appearance closely resembles Yao Chen’s, contributing to Yao Wangui’s accusation that he is impersonating the Yao Clan’s founder 197.
- Beard: Strokes his beard while greeting Gu Yuan at the Gu Clan gathering 204.
Personality
The Medicine Emperor is affectionate toward Xiao Yan but demanding as a teacher. He insists on developing Dou Qi, physical strength, soul power, and alchemy together, and worries that rapid breakthroughs could weaken his disciple’s foundation. His sole stated rule is never to betray one’s master or dishonor the lineage—a restriction prompted by Yao Chen’s experience with Han Feng 7 17 82.
Yao Chen’s influence makes him noticeably fond of boasting. He treats formidable techniques as modest gifts and recounts how a Dou Sheng once begged him to accept the Ninefold Thunderfire Palm. He also indulges in exaggerated complaints about his “unfilial disciple,” eventually forgiving Xiao Yan’s clone after it promises to find him five companions once he regains a body 17 72.
His ancient outlook favors decisive violence: he considers killing an enemy before they act the most direct form of self-protection. Initially frustrated by Xiao Yan’s disguises and reluctance to leave Wutan City, he gradually accepts his disciple’s caution and later advises lying low in the Black-Corner Region 42 45 144.
He remains deeply attached to the Yao Clan. His desire to return is mixed with fear of its decline, and its descendants’ rejection wounds him profoundly. He explains that he returned only to see what his clan had become, not to compete for authority or wealth 187 197.
Abilities & Skills
Emperor-Grade Alchemy
During his original lifetime, the Medicine Emperor could refine Emperor Grade Pills at will. Even in his weakened soul state, seventh-grade pill refinement is routine for him 17 62.
- Batch refinement: Produces five to ten pills per cauldron rather than one at a time. He tells Xiao Yan that Heaven Realm spiritual strength is needed to use this approach 70.
- Multiple furnaces: Operates two furnaces simultaneously, producing five Transformation Pills and five Purple Extreme Source Pills 71.
- Resource limitations: Wutan City’s poor supply of ingredients initially prevents him from preparing the high-grade medicines he would prefer 8.
| Preparation | Documented result |
|---|---|
| Enhanced Foundation Establishment Spirit Liquid | Improved to roughly third-grade quality and suitable for those below Dou Shi. Gu Ni later judges it close to fourth-grade, with sufficiently gentle properties for Dou Qi-stage users 16 23. |
| Crimson Sun Spirit Liquid | Approximately fifth-grade liquid used to draw Xiao Yan’s acquired divine mark 17. |
| Purple Extreme Source Pill | Seventh-grade pill made with Companion Amethyst Source and the Lion King’s blood essence; can raise a Dou Huang expert by five stars 62. |
| Transformation Pill | Refined alongside Purple Extreme Source Pills in a separate furnace 70 71. |
Soul Power
His soul power remains formidable despite his initial depletion.
- Detection: Covers Wutan City instantly and sees through Ling Ying’s concealment, which Xiao Yan cannot penetrate 8 13.
- Long-range surveillance: Extends over more than ten cities the size of Wutan City with less than one percent of his original soul power 15.
- Soul attacks: Knocks Ling Ying and Xun’er unconscious; later restrains Chief Steward Meng with a glance 30 34 140.
- Concealment: Hides Xiao Yan’s breakthrough fluctuations and masks him while following Yan Xiao 82 125.
- Resistance to plundering: His soul power prevents Xiao Yan’s LV2 Infinite Plunder System from directly stealing his power 34.
- Detection limit: Cannot ascertain Chief Steward Meng’s cultivation while Meng carries a treasure that blocks soul-power detection 119 120.
Spirit Possession and Spatial Power
The Medicine Emperor can possess Xiao Yan to fight through his body, supplying power beyond Xiao Yan’s ordinary capabilities 55 106 162.
- Spatial travel: Opens fissures in space to pursue the fleeing Amethyst Winged Lion King 55.
- Tribulation suppression: Banishes Queen Medusa’s thunderclouds into a spatial black hole before the lightning strikes 106.
- Emergency support: Supplies soul power when the Ghost-Faced Referee’s domain prevents Xiao Yan from using Dou Qi 156.
- Cost to the host: Spirit possession places a painful strain on Xiao Yan; after the Lion King’s death, Xiao Yan collapses when his teacher withdraws 56.
Bone Spirit Cold Flame
He uses Bone Spirit Cold Flame, ranked eleventh on the Heavenly Flame Ranking 14.
- Refines medicine and forms a flame-based medicinal cauldron 14 17.
- Seals the mouth of the jade bottle containing the Amethyst Winged Lion King’s soul 56.
- Describes its power as merely “passable” by his own standards 14.
Cultivation Methods and Dou Techniques
| Method / Technique | Rank | Use or teaching |
|---|---|---|
| Medicine Emperor Canon | High-grade Heaven-tier | His cultivation method during his original lifetime. Offers a high starting point and rapid cultivation speed; presented to Xiao Yan as an alternative to the Flame Mantra 8. |
| Flame Mantra | Initially low-grade Yellow-tier | Transmitted to Xiao Yan, with assistance in changing methods. Its growth potential exceeds Heaven-tier methods, and it could help refine a new body for the Medicine Emperor 8. |
| Ninefold Thunderfire Palm | High-grade Earth-tier | Taught to Xiao Yan through direct information transfer. Contains nine layers of thunderfire force; its fully mastered power is described as rivaling a low-grade Heaven-tier technique 17. |
| Nine Steps Treading Heaven | Heaven-tier | Used to kill the Amethyst Winged Lion King in one move. The Medicine Emperor says Xiao Yan can attempt it after reaching Dou Zong and gaining a basic grasp of spatial power 56. |
- Initially refuses to teach Xiao Yan Heaven-tier techniques because a Dou Huang cannot yet handle them 16.
- Teaches a Beast Taming Sect contract art after identifying Ancient White Tiger blood in the Blazing Soaring Tiger 59.
Body and Bloodline Enhancement
He develops methods to compensate for Xiao Yan’s exhausted Dou Di bloodline and advises on other unusual physiques 8 17.
- Crimson Dragon Divine Mark: Creates an acquired mark comparable to a clan mark, raising Xiao Yan’s strength by four or five stars without side effects. It becomes invisible when inactive 17.
- Pill Lightning tempering: Uses the lightning produced by pill refinement as a training opportunity for Xiao Yan’s vermilion bird divine body 70.
- Queen Medusa’s evolution: Recommends Myriad Beast Spirit Flame because its beast souls and blood essences can awaken powerful ancient bloodlines 106.
- Qing Lin’s pupils: Gradually transfers two additional pairs of Triple Jade-Green Snake Flower Pupils’ bloodline power into Qing Lin, producing Jade-Green Snake Nine-Flower Pupils. The process takes several months because her body cannot withstand the power all at once 110.
Great Healing Art
He comprehends the Great Healing Art, one of the Three Thousand Great Daos, through an Origin Dao Fruit 187.
- Can recover from any injury with a single thought.
- The ability is described as practically equivalent to an undying body 187.
Equipment / Weapons / Items

- Flame Ancestral Symbol — Entrusted to him by Xiao Yan while he helps a puppet impersonate his disciple 125.

- Invincible Shield — Given to him by Xiao Yan after he takes over Lin Xi’s body 182.
Relationships
- Xiao Yan — Disciple and eventual benefactor. Their bond develops from Xiao Yan’s initial suspicion into mutual trust; Xiao Yan confirms that his teacher is not an Otherworlder, replenishes his soul power, supports his advancement, and rescues him from the Yao Clan 7 44 82 197 204.
- Yao Chen — Fused soul and identity, not a possessed victim. His memories, relationships, and personality remain part of the Medicine Emperor 7 17 193.
- Xiao Emperor — Ancient friend. This connection helps motivate the Medicine Emperor to accept Xiao Yan as a disciple 7.
- Gu Clan’s ancestor — Ancient acquaintance with whom he was on good terms; he recalls this friendship when discussing Xiao Yan’s marriage to the ancestor’s descendant 204.
- Unnamed lady confidante — Former companion who possessed Triple Jade-Green Snake Flower Pupils. Remembering her power still makes him tremble 91.
- Venerable Feng — Yao Chen’s old friend. Xiao Yan explains the soul fusion and offers to arrange a reunion at the Yao Clan 193.
- Ling Ying — Initially a surveillance target and later an ally. Their first Dao Sect encounter nearly kills Ling Ying, but the Medicine Emperor accepts his apology and subsequently helps him restrain Meng 13 30 133 140.
- Yao Dan and Yao Wangui — Descendants who reject his claim to be their founder. Yao Dan has him arrested, while Yao Wangui attempts to execute him 196 197.
