She never considered that her disguise might have been exposed. After all, even the academy's deans couldn't see through her transformation technique. How could a mere student like him possibly spot anything amiss?
That night, after seeing off Joni, who had seemed rather eager to stay over, Wendy looked curiously at Eros and asked:
"How are you going to check?"
Eros's eyes darted as he said, "Lie on the bed and take off all your clothes."
Wendy's pretty face flushed crimson. She raised a little fist as if to hit him. "Do you want me to send you flying?"
"Ahem, you can keep your clothes on, of course. Just lie down." Eros cleared his throat and hastily corrected himself.
A moment later, he schooled his expression and closed his eyes. Then he covered his right eye with his right hand and opened his left.
In an instant, that once clear, jewel-like eye turned pitch-black, as though it could swallow even light.
Eros studied Wendy carefully with his left eye, then asked inwardly:
"Well? Can you see anything?"
Sure enough, Barbara didn't disappoint him. "Yes. So that's what it is!"
"What do you mean? What's the problem?"
"She would make an excellent sacrifice!" Barbara fell silent for a moment before speaking slowly.
Eros froze. A sacrifice? He hurriedly pressed her. "What does that mean?"
"A Spirit-Favored Body. She has a Spirit-Favored Body. People with this constitution enjoy the favor of the Spirit World, and their souls receive its protection when roaming through it."
Eros was puzzled. What did that have to do with being a sacrifice?
Barbara thought for a moment, gathering her words before continuing her explanation:
"Besides enjoying the Spirit World's favor, this constitution is also highly sought after by eldritch entities. And, of course, those evil gods in the Abyss are very fond of the flesh and blood of people with this constitution."
Understanding began to dawn on Eros. "So when you called her a sacrifice, you meant..."
"Exactly. All you need to do is offer someone with this constitution as a sacrifice to those evil gods. Not only will they bestow a divine gift upon you, but they'll also grant you one small wish."
Eros understood. It seemed that blue-haired fellow had discovered Wendy possessed this so-called Spirit-Favored Body. So he wanted to sacrifice her to an evil god in exchange for a gift?
That wasn't difficult for Eros to understand. After all, evil gods were still gods, still great beings.
Even the smallest gift from them could count as a tremendous boon to a mortal, never mind having a small wish granted as well.
It might be called a small wish, but that depended on whose perspective you took. What seemed small to an evil god might be anything but small to a mortal.
He simply hadn't expected the Chris Empire's royal family to have ties to evil gods. The question was whether that blue-haired fellow was acting alone or on behalf of the entire royal family.
If it was the entire royal family, and they all intended to sacrifice his bratty little sister to an evil god in exchange for a gift, wouldn't she be in danger?
At that thought, he couldn't help feeling relieved. Fortunately, he'd discovered it early and could start preparing now...
Meanwhile, Wendy watched Eros, who seemed lost in thought beside the bed, with curiosity. Her bright eyes blinked expectantly as she waited for him to explain.
After a long while, Eros clicked his tongue and looked at Wendy, who had already sat up on the bed. "Bratty little sister, you're in quite a dangerous position right now!"
Wendy looked at him in confusion, so Eros told her everything Barbara had said, along with his own suspicions.
By the time he finished, Wendy was rather angry. "I knew it! One look at that blue-haired guy was enough to tell he was no good!"
Eros chuckled instead. "Don't forget, eldritch entities are very fond of you too. If I weren't around, or if you weren't staying inside the academy, you'd probably have a whole swarm of them trying to corrupt your soul every night."
Hearing that, Wendy grew troubled. He was right. She couldn't make use of a single benefit of this damned constitution yet, but its drawbacks were already piling up.
Seeing that his words had done their job, Eros gave her an inscrutable smile. Wendy immediately brightened. "You have a solution?"
After all, they'd grown up together. Seeing that look on Eros's face, how could she not know he had a solution?
In truth, this wasn't difficult to resolve. Barbara had told him why this was happening.
It was simply because Wendy's grasp of Servant of Secrets wasn't strong enough to conceal her completely.
Since her grasp wasn't strong enough, he could just cast it for her.
Ever since his Servant of Secrets had advanced into Lord of Secrets, it had changed from a passive skill into an active one.
Besides, with part of the Book of the Night's projection here, he wouldn't even have to endure the backlash from casting the spell.
Without further hesitation, he split off a thread of his consciousness to touch the Little Book of the Night in his mind while pressing a finger between Wendy's brows.
Nothing stirred, except that the surrounding darkness seemed to deepen slightly.
Before long, the mark of a small booklet appeared between Wendy's brows, then slowly sank into her body and vanished.
Seeing this, Eros clapped his hands, his work complete, and said:
"Done. I've hidden your Spirit-Favored Body. Now no one can discover that you have one."
Wendy touched the spot between her brows, frowning in concentration as she said:
"It feels like you left something inside me!"
The corner of Eros's eye twitched, and he hurriedly waved his hands. "You can't say that! You really can't say that!"
