Background / History
Tristana was Quelyn’s youngest daughter, born to Kalesh Winsbade. As a small child, she was forced to watch Quelyn burn her father to death. A family guard told her that Kalesh had allowed love to undermine his obedience and that only the Spider Queen had the right to save a drow. Tristana remembered those words into adulthood 421.
Despite executing Kalesh, Quelyn closely protected Tristana: guards supervised her daily life, meals were tested for poison, and she accompanied her mother even on military campaigns. Watching Quelyn’s divine spells destroy enemies impressed her more deeply than scripture. Quelyn taught her that retaining power required constant suspicion, coldness, and mercilessness 421.
Tristana completed Arachne’s course of study in less than five years, compared with the fifty years taken by other drow nobles, becoming the youngest priestess of Lolth in centuries. Although others considered her a prodigy, she believed her success came from whispered suggestions and impressions supplied by Lolth rather than exceptional understanding of scripture 294 421.
Her position within Nightwind remained political rather than secure. She understood that Quelyn supported her partly to restrain Brichidi’s expanding influence, and she sought both religious advancement and an armed force loyal to herself rather than to the family 257 421.
Appearance
- Hair and eyes: Long white hair and clear, pale-purple or violet eyes 147 224 249.
- Face: Delicate features, less gaunt than those of other drow, with a youthful innocence around her eyes 149.
- Usual clothing: Ornate priestess’s scale mail, accompanied by a Serpent-Head Whip and concealed backup weapons 263.
- Ceremonial clothing: A black spider-silk gown with purple ribbons, spider-silk stockings, and black lip color 263.
- Promotion manifestation: Dark-purple spider-like markings appeared beneath the skin of her cheeks, neck, shoulders, and arms during her coming-of-age ritual 264.
Personality
Tristana is proud of her noble blood, gender, and religious standing. She treats deference as an entitlement and regards half-drow as slaves rather than commoners. Even while reclaiming property from Fyvree, she punishes a business owner for disparaging her dead sister: hostility between nobles does not, in her view, authorize disrespect from their social inferiors 188 230 235.
Her devotion to Lolth is absolute. She interprets divine guidance as proof that she has been chosen and views the goddess’s harsh doctrine as necessary protection for the drow. Her faith survives military defeat, enslavement by mind flayers, and family infighting. Alongside that devotion, she develops a deliberate fascination with torture, studying ways to prolong a sacrifice’s suffering while keeping the victim conscious 242 421.
She is resilient in practical hardship but volatile when her pride or relationships are challenged. During the initial escape, she performs exhausting cleanup work without complaint and heals Balin despite his hostility. Later, she becomes increasingly possessive of Renato, attempts to control his movements and employment, and lashes out at perceived rivals. After her promotion, her temper grows more erratic and she begins craving expensive wine rather than merely sampling it 147 274 290 297 310.
Abilities & Skills
Divine Spellcasting
Tristana provides healing, protection, utility magic, and offensive support as a priestess of Lolth 147 149.
- Healing: Treats Balin’s head wound and offers assistance with wounds, poisons, and infections 147.
- Purification and detection: States that she can purify food and water and detect magical traps 147 149.
- Silence: Suppresses the party’s armor noise during wilderness travel; later isolates a stairwell and monitoring crystal from nearby conversation 155 323.
- Light Arrow: Kills a Deep Rothé during the journey through the mushroom forest 155.
- Protective spells: Layers divine defenses over herself when startled by the Mind Ripper’s light 166.
- Chain of Protection: Links herself with Renato before the Elder Brain confrontation 206.
- Suggestion: Obtains a pouch from a passing duergar through magical influence 166.
- Zone of Truth: Questions Renato while preparing his drow disguise and testimony 188.
- Disguise dispelling: Uses her Spider Holy Symbol to remove Klauthsura’s psionic disguise 176.
- Limits: At close quarters, she can lack time to chant a spell. Her final attempt to draw excessive divine power causes bleeding, and her healing magic subsequently fails to answer her 147 421.
Underdark Survival
Her wilderness expertise impresses Renato enough that he considers it superior to that of his former dungeon scout, Flori 155.
- Identifies poisonous substances and reads animal tracks 155.
- Interprets underground wind currents and terrain changes 155.
- Guides companions through mushroom forests while accounting for the noise of their equipment 155.
- Warns travelers about the magical traps surrounding Samoriel’s gates 222.
Weapons and Battlefield Command
Tristana combines priestess training with coercive leadership 188 194.
- Has training in scimitars and hand crossbows, as expected of drow priestesses 188.
- Uses her animated serpent whip to bind, poison, incapacitate, and drag an attacker 248.
- Subdues rebellious hobgoblins by executing challengers, appoints Sazza captain, and places the force under Renato’s command 194.
- Leads eight elite Nightwind lizard cavalrymen on a West Wall assignment 322.
- Cannot manually cock Balin’s steel crossbow; Renato asks Balin to supply its crank mechanism 188.
Interrogation and Recruitment
- Extracts extensive personal information from a captured half-drow in less than an hour through torture 249.
- Questions Fyvree before killing her and learns why her sister arranged the gate ambush 226.
- Uses promises of wealth, noble protection, and advancement to secure the Iron Price mercenaries’ commitment 257 258.
Elven Trance
- Rests lightly while remaining ready to awaken, with her fingers still resting on her holy symbol 221.
- Identifies this form of rest as Trance, an ability she says belongs to pure-blooded elves 221.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Spider Holy Symbol — Focus for divine magic and religious communion; also opens a magically sealed family treasury. Sinnaphyx removes it from her corpse 230 421.
- Adamantine Serpent-Head Whip — Initially has three venomous snake heads that revert to metal when she releases the weapon. Following her promotion, it has six heads. Sinnaphyx later takes and transforms it into a Nine-Headed Snake Whip; that form is not an advancement attained by Tristana 147 291 421.
- Ring of Spider Climbing — An amethyst ring surrendered to Renato as advance payment for escorting her. It casts Spider Climb, has three charges, and regains 1d3 charges at dawn 149.
- Scale mail — Her usual priestess armor; badly damaged during the early Underdark journey 154 263.
- Daggers and backup weapons — Concealed on her person; she draws a dagger when cornered in the collapsed passage 147 263.
- Steel crossbow and bolts — Supplied by Balin for the operation against the psionic nodes, though too difficult for her to cock unaided 188.
Relationships
- Renato — Escort, adventuring partner, disguised family guard, and later lover. Their shared secrets bind their fortunes together, but her demands for exclusivity and obedience repeatedly strain the alliance. By their final confrontation, he offers to spare her for the adventures they once shared 149 230 250 266 310 419.
- Quelyn Nightbrize — Mother and Nightwind Matron Mother. Protects and educates Tristana while teaching ruthless power politics; later promotes her as a counterweight to Brichidi. Tristana admires her divine power but fears her authority 319 332 421.
- Kalesh Winsbade — Father. His execution by Quelyn is Tristana’s defining childhood memory 421.
- Brichidi — Eldest sister and rival for family power. Repeatedly attempts to recruit Renato away from her. Tristana dismisses her abilities, while Renato considers Brichidi the more accomplished political operator 229 291 319.
- Fyvree — Older sister who appropriates Tristana’s holdings and arranges an ambush on her return. Tristana interrogates her and cuts her throat 224 226.
- Rodi Nightbrize — Second sister, whom Tristana barely knows because Rodi was confined before her birth. Tristana treats her lack of priestess status and attraction to women with contempt, and later humiliates her during an armed confrontation 294 298 326.
- Balin — Initially hostile traveling companion. She heals him and fights beside him despite their arguments; after his death, she comforts Renato 147 183 216.
- Klauthsura — Mind flayer associated with her captivity and altered memories, later a necessary ally against the Elder Brain. She distrusts him throughout their cooperation and eventually tries to forbid Renato from visiting him 166 176 206 310.
- Raven the Shield-Smasher — Iron Price commander whom Tristana recruits with promises of protection and opportunity. Raven’s company becomes Tristana’s personal armed force 245 257 260.
- Lolth — Patron deity and source of Tristana’s power. Tristana believes the goddess continually guides and favors her, and remains convinced of that protection even as her final healing spell fails 242 421.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Escape and the Elder Brain Campaign
- Her raiding party is devastated by mind flayer psionics, leaving her isolated after escaping their control. Following the passage collapse, she buys Renato’s escort to New Rolling Stone City with her climbing ring 147 149.
- Her divine magic and Underdark knowledge make her a valuable teammate despite Balin’s objections. After New Rolling Stone City’s army is annihilated, she helps assess escape routes and the Mind Ripper’s limitations 155 166.
- She joins Renato, Balin, and Klauthsura in planning to destroy three psionic nodes, free slaves, and attack the Elder Brain. She takes command of freed hobgoblins and protects Renato during the dragon confrontation 188 194 206.
- After Balin’s death, she awakens wounded, comforts Renato, and faces renewed danger as a Githyanki Astral Ship arrives at the ruined hive 216.
Return to Nightwind
- Rather than receiving a welcome at Samoriel’s gates, she is attacked by warriors led by Fyvree. Renato shields her from their crossbow bolts 224.
- She kills Fyvree after interrogation, coordinates testimony to conceal Renato’s human identity, and installs him in her dead sister’s courtyard 226 229 230.
- With Renato accompanying her, she reclaims more than a dozen businesses that had transferred their allegiance to Fyvree 235.
Cult Purge and Coming of Age
- Lolth orders her to purge Ghaunadaur’s followers. Religious custom prevents other priestesses from helping or hindering her, and she initially lacks loyal family soldiers 242 250.
- She recruits Iron Price during the campaign and fulfills her promise to make the company her personal force, granting it Nightwind’s nominal protection without formal family membership 257 258 260.
- Her coming-of-age ceremony brings promotion to Commander. As an adult noblewoman, she gains eligibility for office in the Ruling Council or religious academy while becoming an open target in the struggle for power 264 265 266.
Rising Influence and Family Conflict
- Her rapid promotion draws attention from noble circles and causes some of Brichidi’s supporters to reconsider their loyalties 291.
- Her attempts to monitor Renato and restrict his contact with Klauthsura provoke a confrontation. Renato reminds her that exposing either his human identity or her raiding party’s destruction would endanger them both 310.
- During Nightwind’s assault on the Fryce estate, she reveals Quelyn’s secret alliance with the Mizzrym Family 332.
- At the Holy Day sacrifice, she witnesses Sinnaphyx’s arrival and the command to march on the Misty Domain to recover Lolth’s artifact 349.
Final Confrontation and Death
- In the ruins, she taunts Renato about Klauthsura being buried alive. Renato instead offers her a chance to leave with her followers, promising to spare her for their former companionship 419.
- She calls on Lolth and senses a messenger answering. An acid mist engulfs her, and the divine healing she attempts no longer responds. She dies still clutching her holy symbol and whip 421.
- Sinnaphyx emerges from the mist, takes both objects, and demands that the surviving mortals surrender the divine artifact 421.
