Name Otherkind
Original Name 异种
Species/Race Invasive, parasitic beings occupying human bodies 175 230 268.
Affiliation The entity within the assembled meteorite-fragment “Egg”; coordinated by M, who is ultimately revealed to be its subordinate 297 305.
Occupation/Role Kill humans, obtain blood, collect meteorite fragments, and produce nourishment for the invading entity 305 308.
First Appearance Introduced through Jiang Yu’s account of her previous life 5; Zhang Jialiang is explicitly identified as an Otherkind before the apocalypse 88.

Power Progression

Otherkind do not share a single advancement sequence. These are documented developments among particular individuals and groups.

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Fragment-induced transformation 5 Meteorite fragments can create Otherkind as well as awaken Superpower People.
Accelerated Blood Pool growth 168 169 Fresh human blood helps Otherkind absorb fragment energy; soaking fragments in blood accelerates energy release and superpower growth.
Five-star strength in three abilities 170 171 A Blood Pool Otherkind possesses three abilities at five-star strength. Its apparently inexhaustible power drops sharply after the fragments are removed and it is dragged away from the pool.
Three-star Blood Pool users 178 Some members of another stronghold reach three stars simply by using its Blood Pool, without being the specially cultivated creature beneath it.
Acquisition of a second superpower 212 The Southwest Time Otherkind gains Undying Body after the volcanic eruption. Sheng An identifies M as the being responsible for granting it.
Top-tier evolution retaining humanity 266 268 M is identified as a unique Otherkind retaining emotions, aspects of his original personality, and traces of humanity—not merely his host’s memories.

Origin and Transformation

Jiang Yu initially describes Otherkind as a consequence of meteorite fragments: proximity can awaken human abilities, but it can also create beings that look human and kill people. Later research confirms that fragment exposure strengthens Otherkind and increases the likelihood of their appearance 5 87.

The eventual revelation places both Otherkind and Superpower People within the invading entity’s energy field. Some affected humans become Otherkind—its puppets—while others awaken superpowers without becoming puppets. Otherkind obtain nourishment and collect fragments for the entity, which returns a portion of that energy to strengthen them 308.

Their bloodlust and preservation of human memories serve this process. They can infiltrate humanity, extract blood, and sharpen surviving Superpower People through conflict, producing increasingly valuable nourishment for the fragments 305.

Documented Transformation Risks

Cause or condition Evidence
Prolonged fragment exposure Researchers working around meteorite fragments face continual transformations. In the previous timeline, prolonged exposure also turns Superpower People into Otherkind 234 303.
Fragment-infused water Tang Tao uses water in which a fragment has been soaked to awaken and enhance abilities, leaving numerous hidden Otherkind in B11 158.
“Divine Descent” D3’s infiltrated hospital deliberately creates Otherkind through a similar procedure. Successful Otherkind are retained or returned to the population; other subjects are killed and drained 175.
Damage to a fragment Slightly damaging one fragment transforms all 132 people at the Meteorite Research Institute, with further transformations spreading nearby 257.
Transformation without warning signs Li Huai’s case leads investigators to conclude that some infections produce no abnormal symptoms before the person is replaced internally 125 145.

An early Biological Research Institute finding suggests that Superpower People at three stars or above are unlikely to transform, and that apparent cases may have been concealed Otherkind all along. This is not established as immunity: the previous timeline includes Superpower People transforming after prolonged fragment exposure 159 303.

Appearance and Biology

  • Human exterior: Otherkind can appear entirely ordinary. A fire-wielding attacker at a Capital City shelter is recognizable as a middle-aged man whom another resident had greeted the previous day 122.
  • Host continuity: They retain the original body’s memories, intelligence, and abilities, enabling convincing impersonation 98.
  • No reliable laboratory marker: Blood tests, physical examinations, cell analyses, and genetic tests reveal no consistent distinction between humans and ordinary Otherkind, or between Superpower People and superpowered Otherkind 234.
  • Enhanced bodies: Even Otherkind without superpowers possess increased strength and speed 88 122.
  • Flexible nourishment: Low-level Otherkind can replenish energy through ordinary food, human flesh, killing, or blood. Eating humans and drinking blood are not strictly necessary for survival 169.
  • Changing hunger: Higher-tier Otherkind consume more energy but endure hunger better. Researchers propose that fully evolved Otherkind no longer need food or crave blood 169 198.
  • No universal visible trait: Hao Jingye reveals an altered, red-eyed appearance when exposed as M, but this is not presented as a feature shared by all Otherkind 267.

Behavior

Most Otherkind experience killing as an instinct rather than a moral decision. Humans appear to them as nourishment, while their own kind normally appear useless as food. Their thoughts commonly consist of chaos, bloodshed, and madness, although they can retain enough intelligence to hide and coordinate attacks 143 327.

They have no dependable behavioral pattern beyond their murderous impulses. Zhang Jialiang’s first victims include his own parents and maternal grandmother, demonstrating that inherited memories do not preserve ordinary family loyalties 87 88.

Intelligent Otherkind can restrain their impulses strategically. Hao Jingye avoids indiscriminate killing because it would expose him to humanity’s retaliation; as M, he also retains a human side capable of genuine attachment and resistance to his Otherkind nature 268 298 327.

Abilities & Skills

Physical Enhancement

  • Ordinary Otherkind can overpower humans through superior strength and speed, even without a separate superpower 122.
  • Drawing human blood can make an attacker more agile during combat 122.
  • Exceptional bodies are not necessarily matched by exceptional technique: Zhang Jialiang’s regeneration allows him to outlast opponents whose combat ability exceeds his 91.

Superpowers

  • Otherkind can possess elemental, spatial, psychic, and rule-and-order abilities; documented examples include fire, Flash, illusion, Interference, reflection, and time 122 146 170 205.
  • Some possess multiple abilities. The captured Blood Pool creature has three, while the Time Otherkind later acquires Undying Body 171 212.
  • Powers remain subject to individual weaknesses and energy requirements. The Illusion and Interference Otherkind exhaust their abilities during the Stone City operation, and the latter dies after a final summons 143.

Regeneration: Undying Body

  • Zhang Jialiang regrows a severed arm and rapidly heals gunshot wounds 88.
  • Human blood helps sustain him during combat, frustrating attempts to exhaust his power 91.
  • The ability is not absolute immortality: his efforts to shield his head reveal a vulnerability, and Qi Lingwu ultimately kills him with a headshot 88 91 92.
  • Gu Qiansheng’s Silence fails against this unusually powerful early Otherkind; it is not demonstrated as a universal solution to regeneration 89.

Fragment and Blood Pool Utilization

  • Otherkind use meteorite fragments as an energy source, with fresh human blood improving absorption and accelerating growth 168 169.
  • Blood Pools can support sustained combat as well as cultivation. Removing the fragments and separating a creature from its pool cuts off this advantage 171.
  • The Southwest Time Otherkind uses the entire region as a Blood Pool and carries fragments to supply the enormous energy needed for time manipulation 215.
  • The Southwest creature also consumes other Otherkind to strengthen itself, an exception to their usual treatment of their own kind as unsuitable nourishment 205 210.

Communication and Coordination

  • Otherkind communicate through fragments and their energy. Because that energy is widespread, they can remain in contact continuously 297.
  • They carry out coordinated assignments, including diversions, shelter infiltration, fragment theft, and attacks on research personnel 145 146.
  • Human investigators initially theorize that Otherkind distinguish humans by the scent of blood; this remains a research hypothesis rather than a laboratory-proven identification mechanism 164.

M’s Copying and Puppets

  • M’s superpower is Copying, explaining his access to abilities such as King’s Anchor, enhancement, and Spatial Barrier 267.
  • He distributes copied powers among puppet Otherkind to counter individual Special Affairs Office fighters 293.
  • Each copied superpower can be used by only one of M or his puppets at a time 293.

Detection and Countermeasures

Method Use and limitations
Behavioral observation Reborn survivors originally rely on instinct and killings to expose Otherkind. The approach often identifies them only after casualties occur 87.
Mind Reading Otherkind thoughts can sound like chaos, bloodshed, or madness. Useful information is often inaccessible, and interrogation fails to reveal protected answers 143 164.
Mental-type powers King’s Anchor, Mind Reading, Investigation, and Surveillance can help distinguish Otherkind, although identification is a secondary application of these abilities 198 234.
Yin-Yang Eyes Old Chu can directly distinguish many Otherkind from humans. He suspects that sufficiently powerful, deeply concealed individuals may appear human even to him; this limitation is initially unproven 198 234.
Medical testing Conventional biological testing provides no dependable distinction 234.
Isolation from energy supplies Taking fragments away and separating an Otherkind from its Blood Pool can sharply reduce its combat strength 171.
Conventional weapons Artillery kills many Otherkind, but powerful abilities can survive otherwise lethal bombardment 167 168.
Coordinated purges Baiting infiltrators into acting, screening shelters, and destroying strongholds disrupt large-scale operations without guaranteeing complete eradication 145 175 179.

Qiu Yu’s puppet ability controls humans and Superpower People but cannot control Otherkind 146 312.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Previous Timeline

Otherkind infiltration prevents humanity from relying solely on visible enemies. Elder Zhang hides within national leadership and, a year into the apocalypse, devastates the forces humanity has assembled. Sheng An and Qi Lingwu are badly wounded before defeating him 303.

By the end of the second year, humanity identifies M as the apparent Otherkind leader and openly fights for meteorite fragments. Continued deaths and transformations reduce the country’s surviving humans to roughly ten thousand Superpower People by the beginning of the fifth year 303.

Current Timeline

Arc Major developments
Pre-apocalypse emergence Zhang Jialiang and Xu Jia appear before the meteorites fall. The eventual explanation is that M sent Otherkind, including himself, back when the world restarted 88 96 267.
Capital City and Stone City attack Powerful Otherkind lure Sheng An’s team away while infiltrators strike the Core Shelter. Humanity eliminates more than two hundred Otherkind, including several special high-tier attackers 143 145.
Fragment theft and Divine Descent Otherkind bomb C9, ambush fragment deliveries, and cultivate stronger members through Blood Pools 164 168.
D3 infiltration An entire hospital becomes an Otherkind nest supplying blood and recruits. Deaths and exposed Otherkind together account for forty percent of D3’s population 175.
Stronghold purges Government teams destroy gathering places across several regions, killing Blood Pool-enhanced Otherkind and largely disrupting M’s Divine Descent operation 178 179 180.
Southwest Miasma The apparent disappearance of local Otherkind is traced to the powerful Time Otherkind. Its defeat does not guarantee that new Otherkind will never appear there 194 205 210 219.
M exposed Sheng An reveals that Hao Jingye has been an Otherkind and a Reborn from the beginning, using Copying to manipulate events and frame Qiu Yu 267.
The true controller revealed Communication is traced to fragment energy, and M is identified as a subordinate rather than the ultimate Otherkind Lord 297.
Hao Jingye’s death His remaining humanity suppresses his defenses, allowing Jiang Yu’s Little Fish Mint to pierce his heart and kill him 298.
Purpose of the invasion uncovered Otherkind are revealed as tools for harvesting human blood and nourishing the fragments; stronger surviving humans also become more valuable nourishment 305 308.
