The next day, protesters gathered at the Management Council as Lu Feng arrived to identify the loudest shareholders, while Bai Hongbo woke with no memory of the previous evening.

  • Su Tianyu thanked Bai Hongbo for supposedly holding off Lu Feng at the dump, and the Su Family praised Bai as a real man.
  • After drinking heavily, Bai Hongbo nearly revealed that he had called Lu Feng, then pledged to back the four companies and help secure the release of Su Tiannan’s uncle.

  • The four companies’ managers and shareholders gathered peacefully outside the District Management Council to present their demands.
  • Lu Feng arrived at the Management Council and ordered someone to find out which company’s shareholders were shouting the loudest.
  • Bai Hongbo woke with a splitting headache and could not remember why he had visited the Su Family or how they had praised him.

Ch. 10The Black Tower

Su Tianyu organized a continuing work stoppage against Changqing Company’s sanitation monopoly while building connections that could help free his uncle. As the protest dragged on, Lu Feng sent five men to carry out an attack, and Wu Shixiong volunteered for night watch at the Su Family yard.

  • Lu Feng watched the protest, bribed a police sergeant with a dinner invitation, and had a subordinate memorize the demonstrators’ faces.
  • Su Tianyu urged Su Tiannan to build a relationship with Wang Daolin, since the Police Bureau would have to approve their uncle’s release.

  • A Bai Family manager and a Kong Family crew leader named He Daming joined their workers for a meal and discussed their companies’ dispute with Changqing Company.
  • Five men in floral shirts ambushed the workers, stabbed He Daming, and beat him and Li Gang before their leader smashed their hands and feet with a sledgehammer.

  • Kong Zhenghui offered He Daming’s family at least twenty thousand in compensation and a company job for their son in exchange for cooperation with the media.
  • Bai Hongbo visited Li Gang’s family after drinking, gave them over three thousand in cash, and assured them the company would cover their expenses and compensation.
  • Su Tianyu watched workers joke at Wu Shixiong’s expense until Third Sister reprimanded them and sent them out to patrol.

  • Third Sister bit a thug who grabbed her, and Floral Shirt raised his knife to attack her.
  • Da Xiong charged into the lobby, struck Floral Shirt with a chair, then lifted a registration desk and slammed it onto him.
  • The thugs slashed Da Xiong as he swung the desk, while Su Tianyu ran downstairs and took his place at the foot of the stairs.

Ch. 15Pull down the shutter

  • A surviving attacker called Lu Feng to report the failed raid, and Lu Feng left after learning A Ming-Floral Shirt was missing.
  • Kong Zhenghui heard about the attack, called Su Tiannan, and arranged to bring people to the yard.

Ch. 16Why had the iron warrior gone missing?

After Lu Feng’s men attacked and burned the Su Family’s waste yard, Su Tianyu urged Kong Zhenghui to hold off on involving the media and told Su Tiannan to seek help from Wang Daolin. Lu Feng could not find several of his men and denied ordering the fire, while Su Tiannan tried to persuade Wang to pressure Changqing Company; the chapter ended with Su Tianbei discovering his gun was missing.

  • Su Tiannan offered Wang Daolin the attackers as leverage and asked him to pressure Changqing Company into settling the dispute.
  • Su Tianbei went to retrieve the gun he had hidden beneath his car seat and found it was gone.

Ch. 17Gunshots that shattered the balance

Su Tiannan’s attempt to recruit Wang Daolin’s help failed, and a gunman attacked them outside the restaurant, shooting Su Tiannan and narrowly missing Wang Daolin. The gunman escaped and erased his traces, while Lu Feng was left bewildered after Li Xing accused him of ordering the attack.

  • Wang Daolin refused Su Tiannan’s offer to help the Su Family, explaining that intervening against Changqing Company would provoke its powerful connections.

  • Wang Daolin’s colleagues blamed Changqing Company for the attack, and Wang Daolin said the shots had been a warning.
  • Li Xing angrily called Lu Feng about the shooting, but Lu Feng denied knowing what he meant as the gunman walked beneath the streetlights.

Ch. 18Prelude to the offensive

After Wang Daolin agreed to help Su Tiannan take action against Changqing Company, Su Tianyu arranged for the captured men to be handed to the police. As the Police Bureau investigated the shooting, a powerful man in Longkou District prepared to send a message to the Four Companies.

  • Wang Daolin agreed to help Su Tiannan and told him to let the police take the captured men while Su Tiannan handled the contacts who assisted them.
  • Su Tiannan called Su Tianyu, who took the men to a rural road and arranged for Li Xing's officers to collect them.

  • Floral Shirt told the cell boss that he had trashed the Su Family's garbage yard, and a bald inmate kicked him and called for the other prisoners to use him for practice.

Ch. 20Gathering at Fortune House

After Yu Jinrong signaled support for the four families, mounting pressure forced Li Hongze to seek negotiations with them at Fortune House. Su Tianyu and the others arrived for the late-night meeting, while police and powerful figures waited to see how the talks would unfold.

  • Kong Zhenghui grabbed the bag of money and shouted for the group to leave.

Ch. 24Hospital roommates

After the Fortune House fight, the Four Companies divided Changqing Company’s compensation and recovered at the hospital. Su Tianyu switched rooms to escape Bai Hongbo’s nonstop chatter, grew close to Wu Shixiong, and heard someone cursing outside the ward.

  • Neither Changqing Company nor the Su, Liu, Bai, and Kong Families reported the Fortune House fight, and Floral Shirt was left likely to take the blame for several charges.
  • Su Tianyu, Su Tianbei, Kong Zhenghui, Bai Hongbo, and the others went to the hospital, where Changqing Company’s six hundred thousand in compensation was divided among the Kong, Su, and Bai Families.
