Background
Baoyu is raised as Rongguo Mansion’s favored legitimate son. Jia Mu initially regards him, rather than the concubine-born Jia Huan, as the family’s future. Jia Zheng hopes to direct him toward the imperial examinations, while Madam Wang connects his academic success with the inheritance of the family estate 11 35.
His reputation as a “Kirin Child” is associated with the claim that he was born with jade in his mouth. Empress Yin later invokes this story sarcastically, questioning whether his supposed distinction exceeds that of the imperial bloodline 223.
Appearance
- Broad, round face: Frequently described as broad-faced, giving rise to the recurring “Big-Faced Bao” designation 35 113.
- Purple-gold crown: A characteristic accessory worn during household celebrations, political visits, and his appearance as a Guard Strongman 76 149 360.
- Luxurious clothing: Wears a peacock-feather cloak shimmering with gold and emerald during lessons with Shen Fu 118.
- Later decline: Appears haggard and dazed while his mother is dying; by then, he has pawned his crown and other ornaments 397 400.
Personality
Baoyu is intensely jealous of Jia Huan’s growing prestige and the attention he receives from the household’s young women. He first dismisses Huan’s bravery as a servant’s fabrication, then attempts to forbid Lin Daiyu from visiting Huan or teaching his maid. Daiyu rejects his claim to authority over her 5 25.
His self-image depends heavily on being the family’s exceptional “Kirin Child.” He boasts that examinations are effortless for him, interprets Jia Huan’s indifference as envy, and promises to become the top graduate. His exposure for cheating sharply contradicts these claims 149 150 152.
Baoyu presents himself as honorable and protective of women, yet accepts a scheme involving Yingchun’s unwanted marriage and later plans to kill innocent merchants to fabricate military merit. His hostility toward Jia Huan becomes so consuming that he celebrates reports of his death and military defeat 36 38 172 268 278 279.
He repeatedly throws his precious jade when humiliated, relying on the alarm this causes Jia Mu, Madam Wang, and his maids. Once Jia Mu transfers her confidence to Jia Huan, she no longer responds to the gesture. Baoyu remains devoted to his mother, seeking physicians and pleading for her recovery during her final illness 36 118 246 400.
Abilities & Skills
Education and Examination Preparation
- Receives repeated tutoring arranged by his family, although Jia Zheng initially condemns his neglect of study 32 35.
- Studies the classics under Hanlin Academician Shen Fu, who promises to prepare him for the provincial examination within three months 118.
- Earns Tongsheng and licentiate status, but later confesses to buying County Examination questions for one hundred taels. His results therefore do not establish the extraordinary talent he claims 149 150 152.
Martial Limitations
- Explicitly describes himself as knowing no martial arts after joining the Embroidered Uniform Guard 364.
- Recognizes that this deficiency threatens his ambition to become Pacification Commissioner and decides that strategy must compensate for his lack of strength 364.
- His proposal to obtain battlefield credit depends on elite escorts and fraudulent claims, not demonstrated combat ability 278 279.
Equipment / Items
- Precious jade: Worn against his chest and treated by his mother and grandmother as his “lifeline.” Repeated impacts leave it cracked; after Madam Wang’s death, Baoyu finally destroys it 36 118 152 246 400.
- Purple-gold crown: His recurring emblem of privileged dress and self-importance. He eventually sells it at a pawnshop 149 360 397.
- Ninth-rank official attire: A plain pale-green robe, lacquered gauze hat, and leather belt fitted with black horn 330.
- Guard uniform and saber: Wears a black Flying Fish Uniform and carries an Embroidered Spring Saber after becoming a Strongman 360.
- Brocade Pouch: Carries an accusation that Jia Huan raped his father’s principal wife. Twin Whips confiscates it during Baoyu’s failed coffin-bearing remonstrance 335.
Relationships
- Jia Huan — Younger brother and principal rival. Baoyu resents his official success, romantic relationships, and authority within the household; Huan repeatedly punishes him and ultimately leaves him alive in disgrace after the coup 38 58 152 381.
- Madam Wang — Mother and chief supporter. Encourages retaliation against Jia Huan, seeks advantageous appointments for Baoyu, and shares his hopes for Huan’s downfall. Baoyu remains beside her during her terminal decline 38 324 397 400.
- Jia Zheng — Father. Pressures Baoyu to study, punishes his idleness and misconduct, and briefly takes pride in his examination achievements before the cheating scandal 32 43 150 152.
- Jia Mu — Grandmother and early protector. Initially shields and praises him, but eventually recognizes Jia Huan as the family’s pillar and rejects Baoyu’s appeals 11 149 246 360 400.
- Lin Daiyu — Object of his possessive affection. She refuses his orders, rejects his accusations against Jia Huan, and becomes increasingly distant from him 25 52 58.
- Xue Baochai — Another focus of his romantic expectations. She condemns his attacks on Jia Huan and strongly opposes the proposed marriage to Baoyu; its collapse leaves him bitterly resentful 65 201 202.
- Wang Ziteng — Maternal uncle and political patron. Discusses obtaining Jia Huan’s presumed inheritance for him, supports his ambitions, and secures his appointment as a Guard Strongman 172 278 360.
- Jia Rong — Companion in celebrating Jia Huan’s setbacks and a source of rumors Baoyu repeats. Later refuses him money for Madam Wang’s burial 58 77 400.
- Shen Fu — Hanlin tutor whom Baoyu calls “Brother Yangshan” and praises as his scholarly role model. Baoyu interprets his arrest as an attack on his own examination prospects 113 118.
- Xiren and Sheyue — Attendant maids. Retrieve his discarded jade, care for him after his injuries, and push his wheelchair; Xiren later tends the dying Madam Wang 52 230 397.
- Jia Yingchun — Sister whose proposed marriage to Sun Shaozu becomes part of the plot against Jia Huan. Baoyu accepts the arrangement despite initial misgivings 38 43.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Early Rivalry and the Sun Shaozu Plot
Jia Huan’s first successes disturb Baoyu’s position as the household’s center of attention. The rivalry intensifies when Huan chooses Qingwen, whom Baoyu expected to receive, and rejects Baoyu’s proposal to restore their brotherly friendship 5 11.
After being slapped and learning that Daiyu has walked privately with Huan, Baoyu accepts Madam Wang’s plan to enlist Sun Shaozu against him. He later publicizes the White-Haired Killing Demon’s challenge and urges Huan to kneel rather than fight 38 40.
The scheme ends in humiliation. Jia Huan produces a signed confession implicating Baoyu in exchanging Yingchun’s marriage for an ambush. Jia Mu authorizes his beating, and Jia Zheng takes him away for further discipline 43.
Rumors, Jealousy, and Examination Fraud
Baoyu repeatedly expects Jia Huan’s career to collapse:
- Spreads rumors that Huan abandoned the imperial princess’s murder investigation; Huan returns with imperial recognition and slaps him for the slander 58.
- Celebrates Huan’s suspension and arranges a Yamen Runner’s uniform as a mocking gift 77.
- Mocks the proposed Northern Liang transfer, only to learn that Huan has instead received a Jiangnan assignment 100.
- Accuses Huan of sabotaging his studies when Shen Fu is arrested under imperial authority 118.
His examination successes briefly restore his confidence and his family’s hopes. At a celebratory banquet, however, Jia Huan arrests him for cheating. Baoyu confesses to buying questions, signs a confession, and is released after punishment 149 150 152.
Hopes for Inheritance and Imperial Favor
When reports announce Jia Huan’s death in the Western Regions, Baoyu celebrates with firecrackers. Wang Ziteng suggests that, because Huan has no son, Baoyu might receive a noble title connected with his younger brother’s service. Baoyu cannot rehearse mourning without laughing 172.
His reliance on imperial power brings its own danger. The Second Prince’s agents arrest and torture him alongside other Jia family members to provoke Jia Huan. Baoyu’s insistence that he hates his brother does not save him; Capital Camp troops eventually carry the prisoners away 209 210.
Later, Baoyu hopes to impress the visiting Retired Emperor, but is recognized chiefly as Jia Huan’s elder brother and advised to learn from him 257.
False Military Merit and the Coffin Remonstrance
During reports of disasters in Northern Liang, Baoyu publicly volunteers to restore the family’s military honor. Privately, his plan is to kill Northern Mang merchants in the Western Regions and present their heads as battlefield trophies. News of Jia Huan’s victory destroys the opportunity, and Baoyu flees home in despair 268 278 279.
Empress Yin subsequently recruits him and Madam Wang for a ghost-wedding scheme involving Lin Daiyu, Xue Baochai, and Jia Tanchun. She also orders a coffin-bearing remonstrance and rewards Baoyu with a ninth-rank post. His attempt to impeach Jia Huan fails when Chief Grand Secretary Yang orders him jailed and beaten 324 330 335.
Guard Appointment, Coup, and Final Disgrace
As the Jia mansions are demolished and the clan faces execution, Baoyu accepts appointment as an Embroidered Uniform Guard Strongman. He condemns Jia Huan before the ruined residence and promises to become the emperor’s most trusted officer. Jia Mu spits in his face, and the family rejects him 360.
Throughout the coup, Baoyu and Madam Wang continue hoping that imperial guardians will kill Jia Huan. Huan instead wins, deposes the emperor, and leaves mother and son alive in disgrace 364 375 381.
By the final chapters, Baoyu has pawned his ornaments and lives in a damp, deteriorating courtyard. Madam Wang dies after hearing of Jia Huan’s ascension. Baoyu destroys his jade and survives an attempted suicide, then unsuccessfully seeks burial money from Jia She and Jia Rong. Denied help and recognition within the imperial clan, he asks to return to the ancestral residence in Jinling; no completed relocation or monastic life is documented 397 400.
