Background / History

Zhang Teng practiced martial arts from childhood and became a prodigy of the Nanyang Zhang Clan. His emergence diverted resources away from Zhang Tao, the clan’s previously favored talent. Zhang Tao later describes him as having taken his position as young master despite being only in the early Dantian Sea Realm 23 27 31.

His downfall followed a banquet hosted by the Nanyang Commandery Prince. According to Zhang Teng, someone drugged his wine, and he awoke in bed with the prince’s cherished daughter. The Zhang Clan, unwilling to oppose the much stronger Nanyang Zhou Clan, destroyed his dantian and expelled him. Zhang Teng later identifies Zhang Tao as both the person who framed him and the one who crippled him; he believes the clan either rejected his explanation or chose to protect Zhang Tao 16 23.

The public account differed: Cheng Lu had heard that Zhang Teng drunkenly entered the prince’s Inner Court and defiled the Commandery Princess. He also reports a reward of ten thousand gold for Zhang Teng’s capture. Zhang Teng initially expected his punishment and expulsion to settle the matter, but the prince continued pursuing him, forcing him to flee Nanyang and eventually seek Lin Bei’s instruction 5 16.

Before his estrangement, Zhang Teng repeatedly risked his life to obtain treasures for the clan, including an Intent Gathering Pill for his grandfather. He later regards these contributions as having fulfilled his obligations to the household 23 39.

Appearance

  • Bronze sheen: His hand takes on a bronze coloration when he uses Bronze Skin and Iron Bones to withstand Zhao Bao’s attack 4.
  • Golden flesh and muscles: After attaining Indestructible Diamond, the bronze coloration is replaced by shimmering gold. This protection is visible when Mu Qingyue’s Arm Sword tears his clothing without penetrating his body 8 20.

Personality

Zhang Teng is respectful toward his master but initially questions teachings that do not fit his martial experience. After learning basic Tai Chi, he asks why it appears unrelated to immortal cultivation. Lin Bei’s perfected demonstration dispels his doubts, and subsequent coincidences convince him that his master can perceive his breakthroughs from afar 2 6 8.

His outward humility conceals strong pride in his new school. Mu Qingyue notices this immediately, and Zhang Teng increasingly regards immortal cultivation as superior to the martial path. His dismissal of Indestructible Vajra as a “petty trick” is sincere rather than intended as an insult: he views it as an incidental benefit that continued Dao Body tempering will surpass 18 19 20 21.

He is fiercely loyal to Lin Bei and his fellow disciples, but refuses to treat blood relations as an unconditional obligation. His rejection of the Zhang Clan is accompanied by resentment, grief, and concern that Lin Bei might judge him heartless. Nevertheless, he insists that his relatives abandoned him first and is willing to oppose even his grandfather 24 36 37.

Failure in training does not discourage him. During his spar with Lin Bei, repeated defeats become opportunities to study and adapt. Against stronger enemies, however, he can be ruthless: he kills Zhang Tao, detains the surviving attendants, and confines Zhang Xiaoxiao when her actions threaten the school’s security 26 33 36 37.

Abilities & Skills

Tai Chi

Zhang Teng uses Tai Chi to compensate for differences in raw strength through positioning, redirection, and rapid changes of attack 10 30 31.

  • Push Hands: Unbalances Cheng Lu by redirecting his attack and pulling him off balance 10.
  • Inch Force: Follows the redirection with a short-range strike to Cheng Lu’s chin 10.
  • Tai Chi Steps: Feints against Zhang Tao and immediately attacks an exposed weakness 30.
  • Borrowing force: Turns stronger opponents’ attacks against them rather than meeting every blow directly 13 31 32.
  • Supreme Ultimate Pushing Palm: Under Lin Bei’s guidance, neutralizes Zhang Tao’s Splitting Fist and lifts him into a defenseless position 32.
  • Tai Chi Eight Trigrams Palm: Delivers nine consecutive strikes in the finishing sequence against Zhang Yong 40.

Breath-Absorbing Art and Dao Body Tempering

The Breath-Absorbing Art lets Zhang Teng draw on Heaven-and-Earth spiritual power to strengthen his body and deepen his understanding of that power 20 21.

  • Its initial breakthrough produces Indestructible Diamond/Vajra, a legendary martial body-tempering achievement associated with the potential to become a Martial Emperor 8.
  • Continued practice substantially improves his strength; by his first assessment with Mu Qingyue, he believes he could defeat the earlier Cheng Lu within three moves 20.
  • The first six Dao Body temperings strengthen the flesh, sinews, bones, and internal organs 45.
  • Zhang Teng estimates that his physical strength will match Indestructible Vajra by the third tempering at the latest; this is his assessment, not a separately documented breakthrough 21.
  • The seventh tempering requires tempering the spirit, which must resonate with spiritual power through a state of oneness with heaven 45.

Martial-Intent Perception and Disruption

Zhang Teng perceives martial intent as a practitioner’s thoughts influencing surrounding spiritual energy. This understanding allows him to interfere with techniques that martial artists treat as manifestations of their intent 19 20.

  • Withstands Mu Qingyue’s sword-intent pressure without making his qi and blood boil 19.
  • Uses unattributed spiritual power to displace energy carrying her sword intent, making its condensation take at least ten times longer 20.
  • Initially cannot prevent Mu Qingyue from condensing her sword intent altogether 20.
  • Interrupts Zhang Yong’s gathering of martial intent during combat 40.
  • After completing the sixth tempering, shatters Mu Qingyue’s manifested sword qi with a spiritually empowered roar 46.

Aperture-Point Sealing

Zhang Teng learns to strike aperture points in ways that obstruct an opponent’s internal power circulation 40.

  • Switches from palm strikes to finger strikes against Zhang Yong 40.
  • Disrupts both true qi circulation and the gathering of martial intent, reducing Zhang Yong’s speed and strength 40.
  • Masters the method within a few exchanges; Lin Bei had required hundreds of simulated fights to develop his own approach 40.
  • His interest in helping fellow disciples open their Heavenly Gates is restricted by Lin Bei, who warns that aperture points are fragile and premature intervention risks their safety 38.

Comprehension and Combat Adaptation

Zhang Teng’s talent is especially pronounced in immortal cultivation. Lin Bei comes to regard him as an immortal cultivator whose potential had been constrained by martial training 26 27.

  • Turns Lin Bei’s broad suggestions into workable cultivation methods by constructing, correcting, and completing their underlying framework 18.
  • Supplies insights that point Lin Bei toward further limit-breaking in the Breath-Absorbing Art 17 18.
  • Rapidly improves during equal-strength sparring, eventually withstanding an attack that had previously defeated him in a single exchange 26.
  • Detects weaknesses and prepares responses before stronger opponents complete their movements 30 31 40.
  • Limit: Perception does not eliminate a physical speed gap. When Zhang Tao overdrives his true qi, Zhang Teng can identify openings but cannot move quickly enough to exploit them without Lin Bei’s guidance 31.

Relationships

  • Lin Bei — Master. Zhang Teng’s initial skepticism develops into profound trust and admiration. Lin Bei protects his place at the Martial Arts Grounds and directly guides his victory over Zhang Tao 2 6 32 39.
  • Tieniu — Junior disciple and close supporter. Warns him about Cheng Lu, helps monitor threats, and later reframes his family troubles as obstacles to overcome through strength 8 9 37.
  • Niu Er — Zhang Teng intervenes after Zhao Bao beats him and threatens Lin Bei’s training ground 3 4.
  • Mu Qingyue — Martial Arts Headquarters representative, assessor, and sparring opponent. Recognizes the school’s qualifications after losing their first restricted-strength match and later requests a full-strength rematch 20 46.
  • Zhao Bao — Opponent from the Six Harmonies Martial Hall. His abuse of Niu Er starts the conflict between the hall and Lin Bei’s school 4 5.
  • Cheng Lu — Master of the Six Harmonies Martial Hall. Uses a retaliatory challenge as a pretext to capture Zhang Teng, then reports his whereabouts to the Nanyang Commandery Prince 5 10 22.
  • Zhang Tao — Clan rival whom Zhang Teng identifies as his framer and the destroyer of his dantian. Zhang Teng kills him when he comes to seize him 23 30 32 33.
  • Zhang Xiaoxiao — Younger sister. Warns him of the clan’s plans, but later sends a letter to their grandfather despite being detained. Zhang Teng severs their sibling bond and orders her room sealed 23 33 36 37.
  • Zhang Yong — Grandfather. Previously pleaded for Zhang Teng’s life, but later comes to take him back for the clan’s sake. Zhang Teng rejects the relationship and defeats him 23 39 40.
  • Nanyang Commandery Prince — Pursuer. Continues demanding Zhang Teng’s capture after his expulsion and pressures the Zhang Clan to retrieve him 16 22.
  • Zhang Zhong — Returned Zhang Clan ancestor. Proposes allowing Zhang Teng back if he has recovered his strength and talent, offering to seek mediation over Zhang Tao’s death and the Zhou Clan dispute 49.
