Appearance

Mu Qingyue is introduced as a young woman dressed in white, with shoulder-length hair 14 20.

  • Clothing insignia: Wears a three-stripe emblem on her sleeve, which Zhang Teng uses to identify her assessment authority 19.
  • Hair ornament: Carries a sword-shaped hairpin that doubles as a concealed weapon 20.
  • Training appearance: Puts her hair into a bun after stopping her sword practice at the Central Hall 42.

Personality

Mu Qingyue is proud of her martial ability and is considered outstanding even among the Central Hall’s martial artists. Losing to Zhang Teng while administering his assessment is difficult for her to accept, but she acknowledges the result and admits the Martial Arts Grounds into the alliance 20.

She prefers practical demonstrations to arguments. When Zhang Teng claims he can obstruct her sword intent, she immediately asks him to prove it. Later, rather than relying on reports of his growth, she requests a full-strength spar to test him herself 20 45 46.

Her curiosity about immortal cultivation initially serves her commitment to martial arts: she wants to use its methods to strengthen her existing foundation. Although she eventually asks to cultivate the immortal path, Lin Bei identifies that same attachment as the reason she cannot grasp its essence 21 22 47 49.

Abilities & Skills

Sword Intent and Manifestation

Mu Qingyue is an experienced manifestation-stage martial artist whose sword intent can exert pressure and take physical form 19 46.

  • Intimidating pressure: Creates the sensation of countless invisible swords surrounding an opponent. Ordinary martial artists must mobilize their qi and blood to resist the resulting loss of combat effectiveness 19.
  • Manifested sword attacks: Condenses three sword forms and directs them at Zhang Teng simultaneously from above, the left, and the right 46.
  • Enhanced movement and attacks: Uses martial intent to strengthen her speed and offensive power as well as produce manifested blades 46.
  • Relative proficiency: Lin Bei judges her manifestation skills substantially stronger than Zhang Yong’s, despite both occupying the same stage 46.
  • Demonstrated counters: Zhang Teng’s Breath-Absorbing Art makes her initial condensation process take at least ten times longer. During their later spar, his spiritually powered roar shatters her manifested sword qi 20 46.

Swordsmanship and Unarmed Combat

Mu Qingyue remains dangerous without a weapon, immediately turning her palm into a sword after Zhang Teng disarms her 47.

  • Arm Sword: Delivers a sword-like hand strike, though Zhang Teng’s indestructible vajra body withstands it during their first match 20.
  • Projected qi: A missed kick severs an arm-thick tree three meters away, even while she restricts herself to early Dantian Sea Realm strength 20.
  • Rapid combinations: Follows her opening attack with several sharp kicks and transitions between evasion and counterattacks 20.
  • Strong unarmed defense: Zhang Teng initially struggles to find openings in her punches and kicks; her unarmed skills are explicitly praised as superior to Zhang Yong’s 47.
  • Vulnerability to Acupoint Sealing: Zhang Teng seals at least twelve aperture points, disrupting the circulation of her true qi and martial intent and deciding their second spar 47.

Tai Chi and Immortal-Cultivation Aptitude

Under Xiao Liuzi’s instruction, Mu Qingyue quickly learns Tai Chi’s outward movements, demonstrating her talent as a martial artist. She does not comprehend the immortal-cultivation method behind them 48.

  • Technical imitation: Performs the movements correctly, but Lin Bei regards them as an outward imitation rather than genuine understanding 48.
  • Obstructing attachment: Her established martial intent and unwillingness to abandon the martial path prevent her from comprehending the Breath-Channeling Method 48.
  • Outcome: Accepts that she has no affinity with the Immortal Cultivation Method; no successful entry into immortal cultivation is documented 48 49.

Assessment and Alliance Administration

  • Recruitment authority: Receives authorization to recruit the Martial Arts Grounds promptly after reporting it as a promising new school 18.
  • Ranking authority: Can classify a force as second-rate; offers to request its nomination as a first-rate candidate if Zhang Teng defeats her at full strength 19 46.
  • Hall oversight: Cancels Cheng Lu’s assessment after his dantian is crippled and warns that his hall may lose recognition if it can no longer maintain public order 15.
  • Settlement advice: Explains that safety alone will not attract settlers; the Martial Arts Grounds also needs roads, commerce, and supplies 46.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Sword-shaped hairpin: A small concealed sword with unsharpened edges and a sharpened tip. She throws it at Zhang Teng during his assessment; it later serves as proof authenticating his challenge letter 20 43.
  • Sword: Used for training and her full-strength spar. Zhang Teng knocks it from her hand and returns it after the match 42 46 47.
  • Martial arts badge: Displays it when identifying herself as a headquarters martial artist to Tieniu’s group 14.

Relationships

  • Zhang Teng — Assesses his school, spars with him twice, and seeks assistance for his feud with the Nanyang Zhou Clan. His rapid growth overturns her initial understanding of immortal cultivation 19 20 22 44 47.
  • Lin Bei — Respects him as master of the Martial Arts Grounds and asks him for permission to learn immortal cultivation. He stops her losing spar before she is hurt and later explains why her martial attachment obstructs that path 36 47 48 49.
  • Mu Qingyun — Her superior and the Central Hall’s master. She reports the Martial Arts Grounds’ abilities to him and carries out his mediation and arbitration instructions 22 43.
  • Tieniu — Her first contact with the Martial Arts Grounds. His account prompts her recruitment visit; his later growth surprises her when she returns as notary 14 15 45.
  • Xiao Liuzi — Delivers Zhang Teng’s challenge letter, explains his recent achievements, and teaches her Tai Chi during her aptitude test 43 44 48.
  • Cheng Lu — The hall master she originally visits to assess. His defeat and crippled dantian cause her to cancel the assessment and question his hall’s continued recognition 15.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Discovery and Recruitment of the Martial Arts Grounds

Mu Qingyue comes to Qingyun Town to assess Cheng Lu’s application for promotion from a third-rate to a second-rate martial hall. Instead, she encounters his defeated hall members being transported on ox carts. After hearing Tieniu’s explanation, she recognizes the Martial Arts Grounds as a potential recruitment opportunity and announces a headquarters visit 14 15.

On arrival, the frail Tai Chi apprentices make her doubt the school’s strength, but Zhang Teng’s approach immediately changes her assessment. She tests him with sword intent and then spars using early Dantian Sea Realm strength. He defeats her, securing the grounds’ admission into the martial hall alliance 18 19 20 22.

Failed Mediation with the Nanyang Zhou Clan

After learning that Zhang Teng can cultivate despite his destroyed dantian, Mu Qingyue recognizes the school’s greater value and agrees to request mediation of his feud with the Nanyang Commandery Prince. The Central Hall’s master sends her to Nanyang with a handwritten letter 22.

The Zhou Clan rejects mediation despite her approach through Nanyang’s Central Hall. She then offers protection by relocating the Martial Arts Grounds beside Azure Cloud City’s Central Hall, but both Zhang Teng and Lin Bei refuse 35 36.

The Ten-Day Challenge and Second Spar

Xiao Liuzi delivers Zhang Teng’s challenge against the Zhang Clan. Mu Qingyue reports it to Mu Qingyun and volunteers to serve as arbiter, wanting to understand Zhang Teng’s confidence. On the journey back, she learns that he has already defeated manifestation-stage expert Zhang Yong after reaching the fifth Dao Body tempering 43 44.

She arrives as the appointed notary and delivers the certificate recognizing the Martial Arts Grounds as a second-rate force. Seeking a direct measure of Zhang Teng’s advancement, she challenges him at full strength and offers to request first-rate candidacy if he wins 45 46.

Zhang Teng breaks her manifested sword attacks, disarms her, and disrupts her qi circulation through Acupoint Sealing. Lin Bei halts the match before injury or a humiliating finish; Mu Qingyue privately acknowledges her complete defeat 46 47.

Attempt to Learn Immortal Cultivation

The second defeat convinces Mu Qingyue that the immortal path may be far stronger than she understood. She asks Lin Bei whether she can cultivate it and undergoes a Tai Chi aptitude test with Xiao Liuzi 47 48.

Although she quickly reproduces the movements, she cannot grasp their cultivation essence. Lin Bei explains that she wants to borrow immortal cultivation’s strengths to improve martial arts rather than commit to a different path. She accepts that she lacks affinity with the method 48 49.
