Background / History
Pikachu was left to the original Su Bai by his mother. When the transmigrated Su Bai arrived, Pikachu was his only Pokémon, and they faced a final exam whose failure would jeopardize Su Bai’s diploma. Su Bai used the system’s starter-pack randomization to strengthen him immediately before the battle 1.
Su Bai later investigated evolution and learned that Pikachu’s attributes would be randomized again if he evolved into Raichu, potentially making him stronger or weaker. After watching videos of Raichu, Pikachu made it clear that he did not want to evolve. Su Bai respected that decision, despite obtaining a top-grade Thunder Stone 2 27 38.
Appearance
- Small build and short limbs: His little paws and stubby arms are used to handle food, clap during Grass Knot, and cling to opponents 11 19 27.
- Electric cheek pouches: Visible arcs crackle from them when he prepares to battle 10 16.
- Expressive ears and face: His ears droop when disappointed, and he bares small white teeth when irritated 40 41.
Personality
Pikachu is openly affectionate toward Su Bai, frequently riding on his shoulder, nuzzling his cheek, and seeking his lap rather than sleeping elsewhere. He notices Su Bai’s unhappiness and leaves his play equipment to comfort him. He also dislikes staying in a Poké Ball, even protesting when Su Bai tries to recall him for protection during the wildfire 6 7 13 15 43.
He is courageous and protective, willingly accepting Cynthia’s challenge for Su Bai’s sake despite the danger posed by her Pokémon. His protectiveness can become jealousy: he independently drenches a flirtatious senior with Surf, and Su Bai identifies him as an enthusiastic supporter of his relationship with Cynthia. Pikachu also has a gentle side, reassuring the injured Growlithe by sharing a Berry and patiently trying to coax the traumatized Eevee out of hiding 4 11 17 49.
Abilities & Skills
Speed Boost
Speed Boost replaced Static during the initial randomization and makes Pikachu progressively faster while battling 1.
- Evasive buildup: Repeated Quick Attacks let him avoid attacks while his speed increases 1 13 27.
- Overcoming speed disadvantages: Against a Swift Swim Golduck, Su Bai notes that Pikachu may begin slower but can keep accelerating 37.
- Training emphasis: Su Bai develops his ability to survive long enough to build speed, then strike before opponents can respond 49.
Enhanced Durability
Pikachu’s randomized Defense of 170 and Special Defense of 120 allow him to withstand attacks that observers believe should defeat an ordinary Pikachu 1.
- Survives the remaining stones from Krookodile’s Stone Edge after deflecting most of the attack 1.
- Endures Glaceon’s Blizzard through a combination of high defenses and electricity shielding part of the attack 4.
- Takes little damage from Jangmo-o’s Brick Break and convincingly pretends to be badly injured 26 27.
- Limit: Volt Tackle’s recoil bypasses his defensive stats. It causes his worst injury during the Health Cup, leading Su Bai to reserve it for finishing attacks 27 49.
Electric Techniques
| Move | Acquisition or demonstrated use |
|---|---|
| Thunder Shock | Known before randomization; absent from the resulting move list 1. |
| Electro Ball | Listed both before and after randomization 1. |
| Thunderbolt | Acquired through randomization; becomes a frequent finishing attack 1 10 19. |
| Volt Tackle | First performed by combining Quick Attack with Thunderbolt while charging through Glaceon’s Blizzard 4. |
| Nuzzle | Learned spontaneously during affectionate contact with Su Bai, accidentally paralyzing him 8. |
| Volt Switch | Studied from Origin Temple’s teachings, largely mastered during the first training session, and fully memorized after further practice 9 13. |
| Thunder | Learned while Su Bai is caring for the university’s Pokémon; later becomes a focus of accuracy training 41 49. |
- Volt Tackle shielding: Electricity around his body helps him charge through Blizzard and Fire Spin, though the move still inflicts recoil 4 26.
- Conductive battlefield: After repeated Surfs create a shallow pool, Thunderbolt electrifies the water and defeats Milotic 24.
- Accuracy over raw power: Su Bai prioritizes landing Thunder reliably rather than relying on damaging Volt Tackle finishes 49.
Surf
Su Bai selected Surf as Pikachu’s Secret Technique immediately after randomization 1.
- Offensive coverage: Defeats Krookodile, Alolan Dugtrio, Gible, and Combusken 1 13 24 26.
- Battlefield control: Suppresses Gible’s Sandstorm and helps flood the arena against Milotic 24.
- Rescue use: Soaks people trapped in the Ten Directions Mountains wildfire before their evacuation 43.
- Limit: Milotic’s Surf overpowers Pikachu’s in a direct clash 24.
Quick Attack and Iron Tail
Quick Attack remains in Pikachu’s move set after randomization, while Iron Tail replaces Tail Whip in the system’s resulting list 1.
- Quick Attack: Used for dodging, interrupting Glameow’s Shadow Claw, and finishing a weakened Seismitoad 1 16 23.
- Iron Tail deflection: Knocks back Stone Edge fragments and bats Meowth’s Pay Day coins toward their user 1 20.
- Ground strikes: Jolts underground opponents out of Dig and disrupts Dugtrio’s tunnel network 4 13 24.
- Breaking restraints: Shatters the cage holding the injured Growlithe 10.
- Technique refinement: Wu Zhong identifies Pikachu’s force delivery as a “slash”; Pikachu subsequently practices Iron Tail alongside Growlithe for three days 17.
Grass Knot and Switching Tactics
Pikachu learns Grass Knot through the single-use TM86 created by randomizing contaminated Leftovers 19.
- Heavy-target disruption: Trips He Liang’s oversized Quagsire and Huang Mu’s Seismitoad 19 23.
- Footing control: Hampers Golduck before Thunderbolt and topples Hakamo-o before a close-range finishing attack 27 37.
- Volt Switch–Intimidate combination: Volt Switch brings Growlithe onto the field, allowing Intimidate to lower the opponent’s physical Attack. Su Bai treats this as an important disruption tactic 27 49.
Equipment / Items
- Light Ball — Supplied by the initial randomization and retained as a key source of damage output. Its presence attracts Qi Shijun’s attention after the Cynthia battle 1 4 49.
- Rodent play park — Cynthia’s gift occupies nearly half Su Bai’s living room and reaches the ceiling. It includes an antistatic slide, exercise wheel, chew sticks, water dispenser, and burrowing maze 15.
- Champion-level training supplies — Cynthia provides stat supplements, protein powder, and other nutritional resources matching those used for her own Pokémon; Su Bai makes Pikachu’s Pokéblocks himself 35.
Relationships
- Su Bai — Trainer and closest companion. Pikachu seeks constant physical closeness, comforts him, and insists on remaining beside him even in danger 7 15 43 48.
- Cynthia — Trusted friend and benefactor. She teaches him about Double Team, holds and massages him, and provides play equipment and training supplies 6 9 14 15 35.
- Growlithe — Teammate and switching partner. Pikachu helps earn his trust after rescue; their Volt Switch–Intimidate pairing later becomes a coordinated battle tactic 11 27 49.
- Eevee — An affectionate friend who immediately charms Pikachu. After Eevee’s mistreatment, Pikachu tries to coax it out of its burrow while preventing Growlithe from charging inside, calling until his voice becomes hoarse 40 41 49.
- Togepi — A young Pokémon Pikachu watches over, running after it to keep it safe during a restaurant visit 34.
