Core Principles
- The Martial Soul and the self: Lin Feng argues that a Martial Soul originates from its owner and is part of them, rather than a power to be treated separately. Its outward form is a projection of the owner's Source Power 85 272.
- Soul Rings: Lin Feng describes rings as foundations for a Martial Soul's growth and for breaking through cultivation limits. He also finds that they contain laws associated with Soul Skills 21 24.
- Compatibility over age alone: A Spirit Beast's age and rarity affect its ring, but Lin Feng identifies elemental purity and compatibility with the Martial Soul as more important to his choice of a fifth ring 124.
- Cultivation of the self: Lin Feng's later theory holds that lasting strength requires the Spirit Master and Martial Soul to develop as a unified whole, rather than strengthening the Martial Soul alone 217 272.
Development
Lin Feng begins by questioning conventional meditation, which absorbs and converts energy without a fixed soul-power circulation route. He studies human meridians to devise routes that could improve cultivation speed and nourish the body 1 2. He then proposes bringing Soul Rings into the body: if the Martial Soul is part of its owner, he reasons, its rings need not remain external 4.
His experiments produce Soul Meridians, formed by transforming Soul Rings into pathways within the body. His first transformation provides a circulation route and increases his cultivation speed; he later finds that ordinary practitioners can use less potent circulation paths without forming Soul Meridians 8. Soul Meridians also nourish the body, retain the power needed to release Soul Skills, and improve access to the laws within those skills 24 49 127.
Lin Feng develops these findings into the Innate Soul Evolution Art. Three of its paths are in use when he teaches at an academy, and a fourth is subsequently announced 85 90. Ye Lingling's demonstration makes Soul Meridians visible to the public: her first ring has vanished into her body, while she retains the ability to use Soul Skills 130.
Lin Feng later investigates how to form rings without obtaining them from Spirit Beasts. With Gu Yuena's guidance, he self-condenses an experimental Soul Ring, then works toward shaping a Soul Meridian directly from laws and spirit power. He records the Ring Condensation Method and Vein Shaping Method as further parts of the Innate Soul Evolution Art 176 177. He eventually announces the methods as a way for Spirit Masters to advance without hunting Spirit Beasts 291.
Other Theories and Applications
- Yu Xiaogang's theories: Yu teaches Soul Ring age limits and Martial Soul Mimicry. Lin Feng disputes claims that innate soul power follows Martial Soul quality directly, and argues that cross-type ring absorption is already known; similar beasts are generally preferred because they offer more suitable skills and better support evolution 12 135.
- Martial Soul restrictions: Lin Feng proposes that the Nine Heart Begonia is subject to a restriction that might be overcome through Martial Soul Evolution or greater control of its Source Power 33 36.
- Martial Soul projection: After bringing his Innate Treasure Pearl into his body, Lin Feng describes using an outward projection of its power while its true body remains fused with him 217 272.
- Wider adoption: Lin Feng's circulation paths benefit low-aptitude Spirit Masters, while the Innate Soul Evolution Art later spreads through Po Hongchen's academy on the Sun Moon Continent 193 281.
