Background / History
Klein is a transmigrator who remembers a life before arriving in this world. In the Moretti household, he is the second child, between Benson and Melissa. His family moves from Iron Cross Street to the more comfortable surroundings of Daffodil Street 37 40 41.
The Nighthawks accelerate their investigation into Klein after an anonymous letter reports an unusual incident on Iron Cross Street. Dunn tells him that the letter matched information they already possessed, but its sender left no useful physical traces and could not be identified through divination. By this conversation, Klein has recently joined the organization as a civilian staff member 30.
During an earlier operation against Ray Bieber, Klein enters the range of Sealed Artifact 2-049, the Antigonus Family Marionette, and saves himself through the gray fog. While pretending to remain incapacitated, he witnesses the Circus squad’s Magician and Clown kill a Secret Order member and pursue the Antigonus Notebook. The Magician refuses to kill Klein because attacking an official Beyonder would invite Church retaliation 48.
Personality
Klein conceals his anxiety behind the composed persona of the Fool. Maintaining the image of a mysterious being exhausts him while he is still only a Seer. When Audrey notices his sunglasses, he presents them as an experiment and claims appearances mean little to him, rather than admitting that he fears another blinding flash 36 37.
He is strongly protective of his family, particularly Melissa. Seeing her happily speaking with Lorne makes him jealous and suspicious; his stern questioning angers her. He subsequently investigates Lorne’s intentions, first fearing exposure of his own secrets and later suspecting that Lorne is spying on his sister 39 40 41 42.
His concern extends to his teammates. He is touched by Dunn’s reassurance before the Holy Cathedral’s assessment, worries about the squad’s ability to confront Sharon without its strongest members, and stays close to Old Neil while the Nighthawks shield him from the Mandated Punishers 41 43 50.
Abilities & Skills
Divination

- Identifies Lorne as the man from the Divination Club through a vision above the gray fog 33.
- Discovers Lorne watching his home with a telescope 40.
- Obtains images pointing to the Azure Hotel, though he cannot directly pinpoint Lorne’s location 42.
- Checks his readiness to advance above the gray fog and tests the prepared Clown potion with a pendulum 49.
- His attempts to observe Lorne can provoke blinding light, alert Lorne to the gaze, or end before Klein obtains a complete answer 33 34 40.
Spirit Vision
Spirit Vision allows Klein to perceive spiritual phenomena and read emotional changes through aura colors 32 36.
- Recognizes Audrey’s nervousness, shame, and agitation when she asks about animals drinking potions 36.
- Suffers severe eye pain and temporary visual impairment after looking at Lorne with Spirit Vision 32.
Access to the Gray Fog
Klein accesses a private space above the gray fog, where he sits at the Bronze Long Table and conducts Tarot Club gatherings as the Fool 33 37.
- Touches crimson stars associated with encounters, including a star showing glimpses of Tingen 30.
- Conjures sunglasses within the gray-fog space; they do not remain on his face after he returns to reality 36 37.
- Uses the gray fog to save himself during the incident involving Sealed Artifact 2-049 48.
- Keeps this access secret from the Nighthawks, limiting what he is willing to report about Lorne 37.
Potion Acting and Preparation
Klein grasps the acting principles of a Seer through a previous mission and continues digesting his potion by practicing fortune-telling 41.
- Avoids the Divination Club after his humiliating encounter with Lorne and instead works as a street fortune-teller, only to be chased away by police 41.
- Learns potion preparation from Old Neil and independently concocts his Clown potion 49.
Firearms and Field Investigation
Klein combines armed support, divination, and police credentials during investigations and Nighthawk operations 42 47.
- Draws his pistol before entering Lorne’s empty hotel room, anticipating a possible ambush 42.
- Fires to cut off the Circus Clown’s retreat while Kenley advances with Sealed Artifact 3-0217 47.
- Identifies returning Circus members by their builds and abilities, connecting them to the earlier Antigonus Notebook incident 48.

- Benson — Older brother; Klein explicitly includes him among the family members he wants to protect while investigating Lorne 40 41.
- Dunn Smith — Nighthawks captain. Reassures Klein about his safety and Church assessment, but worries that he is advancing too quickly 30 41 49.

- Lorne Dysenk — Subject of a mutual investigation. Klein suspects a threat to his secrets or Melissa; Lorne suspects Klein’s connection to a hidden entity and considers reporting him 33 40 41.
- Mr. Azik — Experienced teacher whom Klein considers consulting for advice about Lorne 42.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Mutual Surveillance with Lorne
Klein’s first unusual contact with Lorne occurs through a crimson star above the gray fog: touching it releases a silvery-white flash. Their subsequent meeting at the Divination Club leaves both men clutching their eyes, while Klein’s later divinations establish that Lorne can sense his observation. One attempt catches Lorne bathing and blinds Klein again, convincing Lorne that an unclean entity is watching him 30 32 33 34.
The misunderstanding escalates when Klein finds Lorne talking to Melissa. Lorne follows the siblings home and watches their house through a telescope; Klein discovers the surveillance through divination. After passing the Holy Cathedral’s assessment without his secret being exposed, Klein shifts toward the belief that Lorne may be targeting Melissa. His search of Lorne’s room at the Azure Hotel produces no answer, though he notices a red chimney resembling one from his divination of Elliott’s kidnapping 39 40 41 42.
Madam Sharon and the Circus Squad
With Dunn and Daly away in Backlund, Klein questions whether the remaining Nighthawks can safely capture Madam Sharon, who has been identified as a Demoness. Frye assembles five members and brings Sealed Artifact 3-0217, the Spirit Medium’s Mirror 43.
The Nighthawks arrive during the Circus squad’s separate attack and clash with its members. Klein helps restrict the Clown’s escape, but the Magician intervenes and extracts his team. Afterward, Klein connects the attackers to the theft of the Antigonus Notebook and begins questioning whether Dunn’s departure and rapidly developing relationship with Daly are merely coincidences 44 45 47 48.
Advancement and the Accusations
Klein becomes a Clown while the squad faces a manpower shortage. His satisfaction is cut short by news that the Mandated Punishers have arrested Old Neil for researching black magic 49.
He joins the Nighthawks in protecting Old Neil, who admits that the Hidden Sage’s murmurs led him to prepare a resurrection ritual for his late fiancée. After Old Neil is placed in the company’s underground cells, Frye keeps Klein and Leonard behind to address a second accusation. Leonard asks Klein whether he worships an evil god; the supplied account ends with Klein’s surprised response rather than a resolution 50.
