Background / History

Transmigration and the Gustav Household

Huang Tao awakens as Roselle Gustav with inherited memories that allow him to speak Intisian and navigate noble society. He initially concludes that this world cannot be Earth because of its unfamiliar history, languages, and enormous red moon. His earliest Chinese diary entry is dated February 15, 1143 8 9.

The original Roselle attended military preparatory school, befriended Green Randall, and once hoped to become an officer. His father had rejected an earlier proposal to acquire Green’s family printing house, preferring traditional income from land and estates. After transmigrating, Huang Tao recognizes that the Gustav family’s finances are weaker than their outward presentation suggests and revisits the business opportunity 15.

The Savant potion later restores troubling memories surrounding his arrival. He recalls returning home in bloodstained clothes and burning them, despite subsequently finding no wounds. He suspects that the original Roselle may have been murdered and that transmigration revived and healed the body; neither possibility is confirmed 36 41.

Discovery of the Beyonder World

Roselle helps Charlotte escape Etienne Marceau by throwing vases from an upstairs window. He later fights alongside Green when cultists attack them at the printing house. Viève’s intervention and explanation of the Church’s covert protection convince him that Charlotte knows something about a hidden side of the world 3 4 17 18 22.

During a noble hunting trip, Roselle and Charlotte discover a mutilated servant and a mutated Beyonder. Roselle fires his pistol and joins the ensuing knife fight, but Charlotte must knock him out of the path of a lethal green ray. Official Beyonders eventually destroy the creature with a pillar of sunlight 26 27.

Afterward, he must choose between signing a confidentiality agreement and returning to ordinary life, or accepting the obligations and dangers of becoming a Beyonder. His desire to protect Charlotte, understand his transmigration, and investigate whether he can return to Earth outweighs his hesitation. As a casual believer in the God of Artisan, he chooses the Machinery Hivemind and accepts Charlotte’s recommendation of the Savant pathway 28 29 32.

Mr. Fool’s Gathering

Touching an unusual Fourth Epoch candlestick transports Roselle to a fog-shrouded palace, where he meets three other participants and the mysterious Mr. Fool. He initially fears that he has attracted an unknown supernatural entity 42.

He becomes the gathering’s fourth member and is subsequently drawn there at noon every fourth Sunday. After confirming that Mr. Fool demands neither sacrifices nor a change of faith, Roselle begins cultivating contacts and considering exchanges of knowledge and resources. He increasingly suspects that Mr. Fool deserves the reverence reserved for gods and angels, rather than merely being a powerful Beyonder 52.

The Church of the Artisan finds nothing unusual about the candlestick. Roselle passes it to Morvan as originally intended, but observes no apparent supernatural incident afterward, leading him to interpret his own summoning as a special opportunity associated with transmigration 52.

Textile Workers’ Unrest

Roselle’s improved loom threatens established textile work in Sushit. Green warns that workers could face lost employment and lower wages, but events escalate before Charlotte’s proposed newspaper campaign can address their concerns: an angry crowd surrounds the workshop and demands the machine’s destruction 100 101.

When Charlotte arrives, Roselle agrees to surrender the machine to the Church of the Artisan rather than insist on his anticipated profits. He prioritizes calming the crowd and preventing lasting hostility toward technological improvements. The participants suspect deliberate incitement; information later shown to Charlotte implicates the Psychiatrist Gervais acting under a Hypnotist’s orders 103 104.

Appearance

Roselle has slightly curly chestnut hair, blue eyes, a prominent nose, thin lips, and well-defined facial contours resembling his father’s 2 5.

  • Formal clothing: A dark-green coat, cream silk waistcoat, white cravat, breeches, and stockings 14.
  • Hunting attire: A fitted dark-green hunting coat and a slightly askew tricorn, with a knife and holstered flintlock pistol 25.
  • Workshop visits: Black clothes beneath an inconspicuous long coat when visiting the Old District at night 79.

Personality

Roselle is ambitious, inventive, and frequently boastful. He initially views transmigration through the language of games and webnovels, imagining himself as a protagonist equipped to dominate a technologically backward world. His confidence repeatedly runs into practical limits: missing technical details, dangerous Beyonders, and the social consequences of industrialization 9 22 28 101.

He takes particular pride in seeing others understand, build, and use his designs. Although money matters to him, he accepts reduced ownership to launch the newspaper quickly and later relinquishes potential loom profits when they would come at the cost of other people’s suffering 32 52 103.

His attraction to Charlotte makes him eager for her praise and prone to reading significance into their interactions. Nevertheless, he can recognize when his emotions have made him vulnerable to manipulation, as he does after the engineered confrontation at Earl Foulis’s ball 47 76 88.

Abilities & Skills

Savant Memory and Understanding

The Savant potion helps Roselle recover and organize knowledge he already possesses, bringing previously inaccessible Earth memories into usable form 36 42.

  • Recalls classroom lessons and textbook illustrations with increasing clarity 36.
  • Finds connections between ideas that had previously seemed vague or unrelated 79.
  • Recovers detailed memories of literary plots, characters, and scenes, though he chooses invention over adapting novels 76.
  • Improves his command of Loenese sufficiently to understand and speak most of its vocabulary at the gray-fog gathering 42.

Acting Method

Roselle independently notices that organizing knowledge, drawing designs, and producing inventions improve his mental clarity and control over the potion. Charlotte’s explanation allows him to recognize these experiences as acting according to the identity of a Savant 76 79 80.

  • Gains beneficial feedback when others understand and use his work 52 79.
  • Experiences relief from occasional whispers and headaches while behaving as a true Savant 80.
  • Hopes to master the potion sooner than Captain Dante’s initial estimate of two to three years; no advancement to Sequence 8 is documented 41 76.

Engineering and Technical Design

Roselle combines recovered modern knowledge with Savant abilities to produce machinery suited to the world’s available manufacturing techniques 52 80 81.

  • Develops improved printing equipment, ink, textile machinery, and a handmade revolver 47 79 81 85.
  • Plans a staged route from printing and papermaking improvements to efficient looms and eventually a practical steam engine 52 76.
  • Depends on the Church of the Artisan for materials, equipment, skilled technicians, and a wider production network 52.
  • Introduces discoveries gradually to avoid making his knowledge appear to come from an unexplained—and potentially corrupting—source 52.

Military Training and Combat

Roselle retains military preparatory training and physical capabilities above those of many noble youths, but becoming a Savant does not provide combat-oriented physical enhancement 27 99.

  • Uses improvised weapons against the printing-house attacker and coordinates with Green 17.
  • Reacts quickly with firearms and knives during the mutated Beyonder encounter 27 28.
  • Cannot match Charlotte’s enhanced speed or safely withstand the monster’s supernatural attacks 27.
  • Remains vulnerable to combat-specialized Beyonders even at the same sequence 50.

Business and Persuasion

Before transmigration, Huang Tao’s work involved identifying users’ needs, converting vague requests into concrete problems, proposing solutions, and selling products. Roselle applies those skills to both invention and newspaper management 80.

  • Prepares detailed plans for newspaper distribution in other cities 49.
  • Recruits Raoul as an illustrator by emphasizing public recognition and preservation of his work in the City Hall Archives 84.
  • Favors bringing useful capital and connections into the newspaper over retaining the largest possible share of its profits 32.

Inventions

Invention Function and Limitations
Improved printing press and ink Produces crisp double-sided printing without ink bleeding through or blurring during handling. Modified transmission and ink application reduce manual intervention 47 52 81.
Improved Jacquard loom Uses punched cards to control individual threads and weave preset patterns. Roselle projects that one worker could perform work previously requiring three; the machinery requires regular maintenance 79.
Roselle Revolver Handmade six-shot weapon with a double-action mechanism. Completed within roughly one week, but its heavy trigger, component friction, and hand-fitted parts prevent straightforward mass production 80 85 89.
Specialized revolver ammunition Still unfinished when Charlotte examines the weapon after the ball. Roselle considers producing the bullets harder than making the gun itself 89 103.
Practical steam engine A planned later development intended to overcome the power limitations of improved textile machinery; no completed engine is documented 52 76.

Sushit Weekly

Roselle initiates the newspaper venture using Green Randall’s family printing house and develops it with Charlotte Sauron and Morvan Durand 15 16 32.

Milestone Details
Investment agreement Morvan invests 20,000 Verl D’Or for a 15% share. Roselle holds 35%, Green 30%, and Charlotte 20% 32.
Trial printing Roselle presents a trial copy to Charlotte as a birthday gift, displaying improvements across the printing process 47.
Launch preparations The partners plan an initial run of 1,000 copies. Distribution combines the Randall family’s freight network, bookstores, cafés, cooperating shops, and temporary street sellers 49.
Expansion planning Charlotte receives Roselle’s notes and agrees to investigate sales and distribution opportunities in Trier 49.
Sales growth Roselle reports 4,000 copies sold in one week and predicts 5,000 the following week; the latter figure is a forecast 80.
Clock Tower illustration Roselle commissions Raoul’s artwork for the front page, linking the paper to the City Hall and Church of the Artisan construction project 84.
Later contributor Introduces Benjamin Mori to Charlotte after Mori’s report on a deceased sheriff’s wealth causes a citywide sensation 117.
