Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Sequence 9 — Arbiter 20 21 Chooses Arbiter from the pathways offered by Viève and receives the Church’s potion. Gains close-combat aptitude, enhanced physical control and observation, and abilities involving authority and persuasion.
Sequence 9 — Arbiter, fully digested 102 103 Completes digestion by arbitrating the confrontation over Roselle’s textile machine. Reaches full mastery of her potion’s abilities in less than four months; this is mastery of Sequence 9, not a new Sequence.
Sequence 8 — Sheriff 112 113 114 Brews the potion using a Sheriff Beyonder characteristic acquired from Tower, supplemented with Silver-White Battle Bear’s blood and Fear Worm’s juice. Gains investigative senses, supernatural memory, and improved proficiency with melee weapons and firearms.

Background / History

Charlotte belongs to a collateral branch of the Sauron royal family. Her mother died in an accident before she was a year old; her elder sister Dana also died in an accident. Her elder brother Reynold fell during the Intis–Loen war four years before the story, with his death reportedly connected to an accident as well. These losses left Charlotte and her father, Baron Raoul Sauron, dependent on one another 6 7 13.

Beginning roughly six months before the opening, the original Charlotte experienced repeated near-fatal mishaps, including falling flowerpots and frightened horses. Afraid that her father might react irrationally after losing so many relatives, she instead wrote to her cousin Rosalie Sauron for help. Rosalie arranged for Henriette Martin to protect her 7.

Gao Linyuan awakens in Charlotte’s body in an alley, wearing a bloodstained commoner’s dress. Older memories return gradually, but the events immediately preceding the transmigration remain missing. The Church later identifies Charlotte as the escaped eighth victim of a sacrificial ritual. Whether the original Charlotte subsequently died from the ritual’s lingering effects is only a possibility considered by her successor 2 20 71.

Her pursuit of Beyonder power initially centers on finding a way back to Earth. As she forms attachments in her new life, protecting her father and friends becomes another reason to advance, particularly after warnings about abnormalities in her bloodline and fate 8 24 71 77 78.

Appearance

Charlotte has a lovely face, refined aristocratic bearing, and the naturally tall stature associated with the Sauron family 74.

  • Hair: Long, conspicuous reddish-brown hair, commonly braided or arranged with Lila’s assistance 10 100.
  • Build: Slender forearms, pale hands, a shapely waist, and a rounded bust 2.
  • Formal clothing: Layered dresses, petticoats, gowns, and hats appropriate to a noblewoman’s public appearances 10 37 74.
  • Covert clothing: Shirts, waistcoats, trousers, boots, and coats that make running and climbing easier while obscuring her identity 60 68 78.

Personality

Charlotte is observant, calculating, and cautious about exposing her transmigration. She rehearses explanations, uses apparent memory loss to account for inconsistencies, and prepares escape plans when dealing with the Church. Her modern knowledge and gaming experience provide useful comparisons, but she recognizes that actual Beyonder combat does not follow balanced game mechanics 4 8 10 11 50.

She is reluctant to kill but prioritizes survival when threatened. Stabbing Etienne deeply unsettles her because her previous experience of violence was limited to games and fiction. Later, she recognizes that the Dagger of Judgment is encouraging her to torture a captive and deliberately sheathes it 3 4 57.

Her independence repeatedly clashes with Raoul’s protectiveness. She sneaks out, conceals dangerous activities, and sometimes uses regained parental trust to secure further freedom. Nevertheless, she feels genuine affection and guilt toward him, and she seeks both business opportunities and supernatural strength to reduce his burdens 5 13 31 72 78.

An enemy Spectator describes her as a detached observer beneath layers of kindness and responsibility. Charlotte does not simply accept that assessment as fact: her actions also include helping vulnerable residents, protecting Roselle, and rejecting the treatment of women as prizes. Her attachment to her new life coexists with a persistent desire to return home 71 78 86 88.

Abilities & Skills

Arbiter Authority and Persuasion

Her Sequence 9 abilities make her presence intimidating and her words more convincing 64.

  • Can frighten ordinary people into withdrawing and encourage others to accept her explanations 33 37.
  • Her projected authority also frightens nearby horses and hunting dogs 25.
  • Against stronger Beyonders, intimidation may produce only a brief hesitation; repeated use can become less effective as an opponent adapts 39 57.
  • Practice allows her to release her authority through concentration rather than deliberately building it up 78.

Close Combat and Weapon Proficiency

The Arbiter potion improves her strength, agility, bodily control, observation, and ability to identify tactical openings. Sheriff further improves her handling of common melee weapons and portable firearms 21 23 114.

  • Fights with daggers and practice swords; defeats and disarms Derrick in a formal duel 27 57 86.
  • Uses positioning, feints, and an opponent’s distractions rather than relying on brute force 21 27.
  • Can smoothly combine a revolver and reverse-gripped dagger in a coordinated firing stance after advancing to Sheriff 114.
  • Her combat aptitude does not eliminate differences in strength, stamina, experience, or pathway specialization. The Aurora Order Assassin initially surpasses her in several of these areas 50 57.

Sheriff Investigation and Jurisdiction

Sheriff grants supernatural abilities suited to recognizing people, tracking movement, and detecting disturbances 114.

  • Remembers a person’s appearance after seeing them directly or in a sketch, with an additional supernatural sense of that person 114.
  • Remembers roads she has traveled and cannot get lost 114.
  • Gains stronger intuition concerning surveillance, abnormal surroundings, and evil or chaotic influences 114.
  • A mystical connection to her jurisdiction can assist detection, tracking, evasion, close combat, and gunfire. Charlotte therefore considers coverage of important city districts more valuable than selecting Saint-Roc merely because she lives there 117.
  • Her expectation of competing more effectively with Sequence 7 opponents inside that jurisdiction is a projection, not a demonstrated victory 117.

Spiritual Perception and Spirit Vision

Her increased spirituality provides warnings and allows her to examine supernatural signs 27 33.

  • Detects an imminent attack from the mutated Mystery Pryer and pushes Roselle out of its path 27.
  • Uses Spirit Vision to inspect participants at an underground gathering 33.
  • Cannot reliably detect concealed observers: an Assassin remains unnoticed until attacking, and she fails to notice Morvan observing her even within her jurisdiction 57 117.

Acting Method

Henriette teaches her that acting according to a potion’s role helps digest it. Charlotte develops practical principles through arbitration rather than relying on meditation and ordinary training alone 55 78 103.

  • Investigate before favoring either side; aim for neutrality rather than judging by status or personal preference 78.
  • Deliver arbitration openly before both parties and obtain their acceptance of the outcome 78.
  • Privately threatening or persuading each side may settle a dispute without producing a comparable digestion response 78.

Ritual Magic and Messenger Contracting

Charlotte learns sacrifice and bestowal rituals through Mr. Fool and acquires Church supplies to perform them 71 93.

  • Successfully receives Temperance’s historical booklet through Mr. Fool 93.
  • Contracts the Spirit World messenger Borus with Morvan’s guidance; the Underworld witnesses their agreement 116.
  • Her ritual practice requires attention to spiritual exhaustion and the danger of losing control 93.

Unexplained Resistance

Several supernatural effects fail to work on Charlotte as expected, but the context does not establish a universal immunity.

  • Julian’s accusation of murder briefly halts her but produces no further apparent punishment. Charlotte later interprets the charge as a misjudgment; his subsequent accusation that she is “committing a crime” restrains her much more strongly 38 39 42.
  • She experiences no guilt while holding the Dagger of Judgment during testing, unlike Viève 46.
  • She retains her conversation with the Spectator despite an apparent suggestion that she would forget it, although she cannot recall the woman’s facial details 88.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Dagger of Judgment — Sealed Artifact 3-1452: Initially forms after contact with Etienne’s dying Beyonder power. Its early properties include greater sharpness, a tendency to strike weak points, and sensitivity to hostility. After Charlotte kills Julian, it absorbs his residual power and gains additional damage against the guilty and Conviction, which can restrict a target for around two seconds when their crime is named. Conviction belongs to the dagger, not Charlotte’s pathway 12 35 45.
    • Drawbacks: Encourages arrogance and punitive impulses, has a guilt-inducing effect during testing, and attracts shadow creatures when unsheathed—especially in darkness. Charlotte’s lack of guilt does not protect her from its other influences 35 46 57.
  • Sealing sheath and Holy Water: Used to manage the dagger’s risks. Charlotte cannot make Holy Water and depends on Church supplies 50 55 57.
  • Roselle’s revolver: Commissioned to give her reliable successive shots. She later tests its ammunition and finds it powerful and accurate; after becoming a Sheriff, she carries it loaded in a specially made holster 79 81 111 114.
  • Ancient candlestick: The object that first draws her into the gray fog. It appears dulled after the gathering 69 71.
  • Fourth Epoch history booklet: Supplied by Temperance; includes a portrait of the Blood Emperor, Alista Tudor. Morvan translates its Highlander annotations for Charlotte 93 96 113.

Relationships

  • Raoul Sauron — Father and surviving immediate family member. His protectiveness conflicts with her clandestine activities, but he eventually acknowledges her Church involvement and explains its political implications 5 13 24.
  • Rosalie Sauron — Cousin, nine years older, and an elder-sister figure to the original Charlotte. Sends Henriette in response to Charlotte’s request for help 7.
  • Henriette Martin / Henri — Protector and informal mysticism mentor. Introduces her to Beyonders and later explains advancement rituals and the Acting Method 7 8 55.
  • Viève — Church recruiter, supervisor, and combat ally. Provides her pathway choice, oversees artifact testing, and explains how she can apply for early advancement 20 38 46 77.
  • Roselle Gustav — Friend, newspaper partner, and firearm designer. They repeatedly protect one another; Charlotte explicitly describes them to Lila as ordinary friends 22 27 31 111.
  • Green Randall — Founding partner of the Sushit Weekly, contributing printing expertise and resources to the proposed venture 31.
  • Morvan Durand — Lawyer, prospective newspaper partner, translator, and mysticism adviser. Warns her about her fate and helps her obtain a messenger 31 77 96 116.
  • Lila — Personal maid and frequent escort. Assists with clothing and public appearances while becoming entangled in Charlotte’s concealed outings 10 13 72.
  • Felix Donovan — Purification-er who assigns Church tasks in Trier and fights alongside her during the Armory investigation 55 66 67.
  • Pierce Dante — Machinery Hivemind captain who assists with countersurveillance and later accepts Roselle’s textile technology for the Church of the Artisan 82 102.
  • Mr. Fool — Host of the gray-fog gathering. Grants her membership and teaches exchange rituals; she privately wonders whether his powers could help her return to Earth 69 71.
  • Temperance — Gray-fog contact who exchanges historical knowledge for information about Trier. Charlotte appreciates her patience and consideration 93 113.
  • Borus — Golden dog-shaped Spirit World messenger, contracted with Charlotte under the Underworld’s witness 116.

  • Defeats Derrick after he tries to make her the prize of a duel. Subsequently encounters a Spectator who used the disturbance to facilitate a theft from the Foulis family 86 88.
  • Prevents textile workers from destroying Roselle’s machine by securing Church oversight and the transfer of its technology to the Church of the Artisan. The arbitration completes her Arbiter potion’s digestion 102 103.
  • Advances to Sheriff, obtains Borus as her messenger, and begins assessing how jurisdiction can strengthen her investigative and combat abilities 114 116 117.
