Personality

Mr. Z is a fanatical believer who treats the True Creator’s will as the measure of every action. Initially suspicious of Mr. L’s devotion, he warns him not to forsake the Lord’s glory. After Nimrod receives divine favor, that suspicion becomes anguished remorse: Mr. Z prostrates himself, calls his earlier doubts sinful, and seeks to atone through service 1 9.

His obedience is particularly strong when a task is connected to the True Creator’s descent. He declares himself willing to sacrifice his life and immediately takes the assignment to watch Lanevus seriously once Nimrod explains its religious significance 10 39. Nimrod exploits this devotion to redirect the Order’s activities without openly revealing his opposition to the descent ritual 11 19 40.

Despite his zeal, Mr. Z can act cautiously and gently. He delivers a letter without harming anyone, checks that the Nighthawks are not following him, and later patiently arranges doctrinal instruction and food for Ademisaul 11 45.

Background / History

Recognition of Mr. L’s Divine Favor

At his first appearance, Mr. Z scrutinizes Mr. L’s claims of hearing the Lord’s voice before leaving to inspect the Descent Plan 1. When Nimrod later acquires the True Creator’s mark, Mr. Z apologizes for questioning him and acknowledges his new standing as the Lord’s Blessed and agent. He arranges contact with Saint Tenebrous, who orders him to follow Mr. L’s instructions throughout the descent operation 9 10.

The Denunciation Letter

Under Nimrod’s orders, Mr. Z delivers an anti-divination letter to the Blackthorn Security Company without revealing his face or injuring anyone. The letter warns the Nighthawks about Old Neil’s corruption by the Hidden Sage 10 11.

Mr. Z initially cannot understand why an Aurora Order Oracle would alert the Church of Evernight. Nimrod persuades him to consider whether a higher existence has manipulated the Order’s plans and instructs him to lie low until the hidden enemy appears 11. Mr. Z subsequently interprets the Church’s response as a successful blow against the “Evernight heretics,” rather than recognizing Nimrod’s actual purpose 19.

Reorganization and Lanevus

After hearing the True Creator’s voice, Mr. Z visits Nimrod and heals his burns 38 39. During the following operational briefing, Nimrod criticizes the Order’s reliance on hunting Beyonders for resources and redirects recruitment toward people who can provide operating funds 39.

Nimrod then assigns Mr. Z to personally watch Lanevus, emphasizing his connection to the Lord’s descent. The assignment is intended to burden Ince Zangwill’s use of “0-08”: making such a devoted Oracle neglect a descent-related matter would require a sufficiently convincing arrangement 39 40.

Ademisaul’s Induction

When Nimrod recruits Ademisaul, Mr. Z is moved by his preaching and asks to confess to him. He then takes responsibility for introducing the new recruit to the Order. Following Nimrod’s warning about Ademisaul’s unusually high spiritual perception, he keeps him from listening to the Lord’s grace and instead arranges doctrine reading and a meal 45.
