Background / History
Family poisoning and Xue Xing’s rescue
Dugu Yan’s father suffered severe injuries that triggered a poison backlash. Dugu Bo, then a Soul Douluo, asked Yue Guan for medicine. When Yue Guan refused, Dugu Bo stole it and was pursued and seriously injured. Prince Xue Xing saved him, but by the time he returned, Dugu Yan’s father had died from the poison 168.
Dugu Bo subsequently protected Dugu Yan from knowledge of the family’s poisoning. She initially believed that she could not be poisoned because her grandfather would have recognized and addressed the problem 53.
Meeting Shi Quan
Shi Quan approached Dugu Bo after discovering toxins in Dugu Yan’s body. Dugu Bo respected his research but became suspicious when the findings exposed the inherited poison problem 56 57.
Their discussion produced a possible treatment: move the toxins into a fixed storage site, using a Spirit Bone rather than allowing them to remain throughout the body. Dugu Bo tested Shi Quan’s poison-dispelling Soul Power and accepted that it could help his granddaughter 57 58.
He obtained a five-thousand-year Jade Phosphor Serpent Torso Bone for Dugu Yan, matching both her Martial Soul’s species and poison attribute. After she absorbed it, Shi Quan gradually forced her toxins into the bone 58 67.
Detoxification
Dugu Bo visited the Breaking Clan to study medicinal principles and obtained prescriptions for forcing out and suppressing poison. Shi Quan then helped combine a medicinal catalyst with small portions of Infernal Delicate Apricot and Octagonal Mysterious Ice Grass 128 129 132.
The first dose worked in less than an hour. The prescribed treatment required two doses daily, separated by at least six hours, and was expected to transfer all his bodily toxins into his Spirit Bones within half a month. Dugu Bo nevertheless postponed further treatment to help Dugu Yan and Ye Lingling obtain Spirit Rings 132.
By his arrival at Heaven Dou Royal Academy, his poisoning had been cured. The Ninth Grade Dragon Ganoderma subsequently restored the remaining damage to his body and helped him reach Level 93 140.
Appearance
Dugu Bo has a tall, thin build and dark green eyes. Detoxification and medicinal nourishment substantially rejuvenate his appearance 57 140 226.
- Hair: Originally ink green; turns black after his poison is cured 140.
- Rejuvenation: Looks at least ten years younger after consuming the Ninth Grade Dragon Ganoderma 140.
- Aura: Previously carried a pungent poisonous smell; later possesses a unified, restrained aura that Bone Douluo associates with stronger poison arts 144.
- Martial Soul True Body: A thirty-meter emerald serpent, as thick as a water vat, with diamond-shaped scales resembling pieces of jade 226.
Personality
Dugu Bo is intimidating, suspicious, and quick-tempered. Dugu Yan warns Shi Quan that saying the wrong thing around him could be dangerous, while Sword Douluo describes him as eccentric and troublesome. He closely questions Shi Quan before accepting his proposed treatment 56 57 71.
His affection for Dugu Yan repeatedly overrides his own interests. He secures a highly compatible torso bone for her, delays his detoxification to help her hunt a Spirit Ring, and initially chooses to pass a gifted True Dragon Soul Bone to her rather than absorb it himself 58 132 216.
Once he trusts Shi Quan, he becomes generous and openly affectionate. He brings him food during his stay at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, permits him to take any Immortal Herbs he wants, and jokes about his unusual cultivation gains and romantic complications 62 131 189 234.
Dugu Bo also willingly participates in deception. He feigns ignorance of the Aromatic Silk Beauty and stages a discovery of his looted garden, although his anger at its actual destruction is genuine 144.
