Background / History
Bulbasaur lived among the Pokémon of the Garden of Mystery, a secluded basin protected by a wall of vines and centered on a huge dead tree. Xia You selected it after watching it wander away from the group to collect Berries. Rather than ambushing it, he stepped into view, prompting Bulbasaur to take a defensive stance and brandish its vines 3.
During the capture battle, Bulbasaur resisted Ralts’s Confusion, retaliated with Vine Whip and Leech Seed, and anticipated a Teleport well enough to land a body charge. Ralts ultimately knocked it unconscious by throwing it into a tree, allowing Xia You to catch it. Xia You photographed the habitat before leaving and later agreed with Professor Cerise that its location should remain secret 4.
Initially wary of its new Trainer, Bulbasaur backed away when released at camp. Xia You apologized for the battle, welcomed it into his family, and offered vegetable chowder. After hesitation, Bulbasaur lowered its guard and ate. Subsequent battles, shared travel, play, and training brought them closer; by their arrival in Cerulean City, it fully accepted Xia You as its Trainer 4 5 6.
Appearance
In its original form, Bulbasaur is a sturdy, four-legged Pokémon resembling a green frog 3 4.
- Eyes: Bright red 3.
- Markings: Dark green patches across its body 3.
- Back bulb: A garlic-shaped flower bud from which it extends vines and launches seeds 3 4.
- Evolved form: As Ivysaur, its coloration deepens and four banana-like green leaves grow beside the bud 21.
Personality
Bulbasaur is combative and persistent. When first confronted, it quickly shifts from surprise to a battle stance, and it continues attacking Ralts despite being restrained and repeatedly injured by Confusion. It also shows tactical awareness by predicting Ralts’s reappearance after Teleport 3 4.
Its fighting spirit can make it susceptible to provocation. Eevee’s taunting nearly causes it to abandon ranged attacks and charge recklessly, but it follows Xia You’s instruction to maintain pressure instead. Later in the same battle, it independently recognizes an opening and delivers the finishing Vine Whip without waiting for another command 6.
Outside battle, Bulbasaur becomes comfortable with its teammates. At Cerise Park, it enthusiastically chases Squirtle, Eevee, and Charmander, prompting Xia You to remind it to conserve energy for the upcoming Gym challenge 19.
Abilities & Skills
Vine Whip
Bulbasaur extends two vines from its back bulb, using them for both ordinary tasks and combat 3 6.
- Picks Berries from trees while living in the wild 3.
- Maintains repeated ranged attacks to exhaust a faster opponent 6.
- Binds, lifts, and slams opponents, including a Squirtle protected inside its shell 10.
- Holds Geodude suspended for a close-range finishing attack 17.
- Can miss agile targets or opponents that retreat underwater 6 8.
Leech Seed
Bulbasaur fires a seed from its bulb. Upon attaching to an opponent, it sprouts binding vines and drains the target’s stamina 4 8.
- Restrains Krabby and prevents it from escaping back into the pool 8.
- Continues draining strength while Bulbasaur attacks with Vine Whip 8.
- Can be evaded with Teleport or intercepted by a stream of bubbles 4 10.
Tackle
Bulbasaur charges on all fours and strikes with its body 6.
- Meets Eevee’s charge head-on; both Pokémon are hurt, but Bulbasaur recovers first because it has more stamina remaining 6.
- Uses a Growth-enhanced Tackle against Krabby, though Harden limits the damage 8.
Growth
Growth surrounds Bulbasaur with a faint green glow and increases its attack power 8.
- Gains an additional boost from the plentiful sunlight entering the Cerulean Gym through its glass dome 8.
- Leaves an opening for Krabby to land Water Gun while Bulbasaur is using it 8.
Razor Leaf
Bulbasaur produces numerous glowing green leaves and launches them as fast-moving projectiles 16.
- Strikes Geodude before it can close the distance 16.
- Shatters most of the rocks from Rock Throw, although fragments still hit Bulbasaur 16.
- Cancels out Electabuzz’s Shock Wave in a direct clash 20.
- Remains available after evolution; Ivysaur uses it in the group attack against Zapdos 22.
Sleep Powder
Bulbasaur shakes its bud to release phosphorescent pollen that spreads across a substantial portion of the battlefield 21.
- Catches Electabuzz at close range and puts it into a deep sleep 21.
- Creates an opportunity for uninterrupted Razor Leaf attacks; Lt. Surge’s shouting fails to wake Electabuzz before it is knocked out 21.
Physical Traits and Limitations
- Endurance: Continues fighting through Confusion, a damaging collision with Eevee, and fragments from Rock Throw 4 6 16.
- Limited speed: Cannot fully evade Squirtle’s tracking Water Gun; Xia You also judges it too slow to dodge Geodude’s wide-area Rock Throw 10 16.
- Type resistance: Its Grass typing reduces damage from Water- and Electric-type attacks, helping it withstand Krabby and Electabuzz 8 20.
- Sunlight response after evolution: The Pokédex states that Ivysaur becomes more active with sunlight and that its bud will bloom once it absorbs enough nutrients 21.
Relationships
- Xia You — Trainer and traveling partner. Their relationship develops from post-capture caution into trust, obedience, and effective battle coordination 4 5 6.
- Ralts / Kirlia — Teammate and original capture opponent. Ralts defeats it before capture and later travels alongside it and Xia You 4 5.
- Eevee — Initially an opponent whose taunts anger Bulbasaur; becomes a teammate after Bulbasaur defeats it. The two subsequently play and train with Xia You 6.
- Squirtle and Charmander — Teammates whose captures Bulbasaur helps secure. It later plays with both at Cerise Park 10 14 19.
- Chloe Cerise — Celebrates its evolution by gently stroking Ivysaur after the Vermilion Gym victory 21.
