Background / History

Maiden’s Peak

Gastly had spent many years amusing itself with pranks before meeting Xia You; its exact age is not established. At Maiden’s Peak, it impersonated both a mysterious fortune teller and the beautiful woman associated with Maiden Rock. Its purpose was to revive a legend that people were gradually forgetting 33 34 36 37.

During the summer festival, Gastly’s maiden disguise captivated Brock. When Xia You exposed its identity, it put the group and their accompanying Pokémon to sleep. Kirlia independently released Xia You’s other Pokémon, including Zapdos, prompting Gastly to abandon taking Xia You and leave with Brock alone 34.

Brock was later found exhausted at Maiden Shrine. Xia You concluded that the genuine maiden’s spirit had drained Brock’s vitality and that Gastly had acted as her accomplice; Nurse Joy confirmed that Brock was exhausted but safe 35.

Joining Xia You

Xia You sought Gastly out because its strength and human speech would make it a valuable traveling partner. He drew it out at Maiden Rock by threatening to destroy the rock, then challenged it with Jolteon while promising not to use Zapdos 35.

Gastly defeated every Pokémon Xia You fielded. Nevertheless, it proposed calling the battle a draw because Zapdos remained unused and Gastly had expended considerable energy. Their conversation about dreams and goals persuaded it to leave Maiden’s Peak, travel with Xia You, and help him pursue a championship 36.

Gastly willingly entered Xia You’s Poké Ball, then immediately emerged because it disliked the dark, cramped interior. Before departing, it promised the genuine maiden’s spirit that, if it encountered her lover, it would convey her feelings. It also apologized to Brock for its earlier prank 37.

Saffron City and Silph Co.

At the Saffron Gym, Gastly met the Haunter Ash had brought from Pokémon Tower. The two immediately played together, exchanging faces. Xia You chose Kirlia for the Gym battle because he considered Gastly too strong—and too advantaged against Kadabra—to provide meaningful training 39.

During the Silph Co. infiltration, Gastly scouted Team Rocket’s positions and checked on the employees. It then incapacitated the surveillance-room guards, destroyed the control panel, and impersonated a guard over the walkie-talkie to conceal the sabotage 42 43.

Gastly helped clear the route upstairs with Hypnosis and remained with Sabrina and Zapdos to confront the Rocket executive Lance while Xia You reached the president’s office. After Team Rocket retreated, Xia You sent it to check for nearby dangers 44 45 46.

Evolution and Continued Travel

On the road toward Celadon City, Gastly demonstrated its control over its own evolution by becoming Haunter without warning. When asked to communicate with Magikarp, it failed to discern the Pokémon’s thoughts and suggested that battle experience or stimulation might trigger evolution instead 47 48.

After Magikarp became Gyarados, Haunter evaded its indiscriminate attacks and questioned Xia You about how to stop it. Later, while scouting near a warehouse, Haunter reported that there was no ambush but that a gravely injured person was inside 48 50.

Appearance

  • Gastly form: A black, balloon-like body surrounded by purple smoke. Its body doubles as its face, with sharp eyes, a large mouth, and two short fangs 34.
  • Maiden disguise: A transparent, hazy woman matching the shrine portrait, floating through the air 34.
  • Fortune-teller disguise: An old woman wearing a purple cloak 34.
  • Haunter form: The surrounding purple mist disappears; three pointed protrusions develop on each side of its reshaped body, accompanied by two detached claws floating in midair 48.

Personality

Gastly is mischievous, boastful, and quick to tease others. It delights in frightening people, startling both Brock and Sota Cerise, and openly describes wrecking things as its favorite pastime. Its teasing continues even during dangerous situations, including the infiltration of Silph Co. 37 38 42 44.

Its attachment to the maiden’s legend shows a more considerate side. Gastly wants her story remembered and offers to carry her feelings to her absent lover. It also values personal freedom, preferring to accompany Xia You outside its Poké Ball rather than remain confined 37.

Despite its overwhelming advantage in battle, Gastly accepts Xia You through approval rather than defeat. Initially without a dream of its own, it becomes interested in traveling and helping him become champion 36.

Abilities & Skills

Advanced Hypnosis

Gastly’s Hypnosis can affect the real world without first putting its targets to sleep. Its apparent transformations are attributed to this ability rather than to the move Transform 36.

  • Assumes the appearances of the legendary maiden, a fortune teller, Jolteon, and a Team Rocket guard 34 36 43.
  • Produces a wind that lifts people and scatters Jolteon’s Pin Missile attack 34 36.
  • Creates a swarm of flying skeletons to frighten opponents 34.
  • Puts multiple humans and Pokémon to sleep simultaneously 34.
  • Expands its hypnotic waves into an area attack, overcoming Charmander’s attempt to obscure its vision with Smokescreen 36.

Dream Eater

Gastly uses Dream Eater to finish sleeping opponents while recovering health 36.

  • Defeats Kirlia, Ivysaur, Squirtle, and Charmander after putting them to sleep 36.
  • The move restores health equal to half the damage inflicted 36.

Shadow Ball and Tongue Attacks

  • Shadow Ball: Overpowers Jolteon’s Thunder Shock, knocks out the paralyzed Jolteon, and destroys Silph Co.’s surveillance control panel 35 36 43.
  • Tongue attacks: Paralyzes Jolteon with a lick and renders a Team Rocket guard unconscious through similar contact 36 43.

Intangibility and Stealth

  • Passes through solid objects, including walls, enabling reconnaissance inside Silph Co. 34 42.
  • Hides in Xia You’s shadow while traveling 37 38 47.
  • Can vanish and reappear during combat; Xia You’s hand also passes through its body when he tries to silence it 36 44.
  • Its concealment is not undetectable: Sabrina notices it in Xia You’s shadow 39.

Human Speech and Impersonation

Gastly learned human language over its long life, allowing it to speak directly with Xia You and report reconnaissance findings 35 36 42.

  • Copies a Team Rocket guard’s appearance, voice, and tone convincingly enough to deceive another member over a walkie-talkie 43.
  • Its speech does not guarantee successful communication with every Pokémon: as Haunter, it cannot determine what Magikarp is thinking 48.

Voluntary Evolution

  • Evolves into Haunter at will, without a preceding battle or external trigger being shown 48.
  • Claims it can immediately evolve into its third form; this further evolution is not demonstrated in the provided chapters 48.

Relationships

  • Xia You — Trainer and traveling partner. Gastly willingly joins him after approving of his character and championship ambitions 36 37.
  • Maiden’s spirit — Helps preserve her legend and promises to convey her feelings if it finds her lover 37.
  • Brock — Target of its maiden impersonation and abduction. Brock accepts its later apology 34 37.
  • Kirlia — Opponent who protects Xia You during their first confrontation; later works alongside Gastly against Team Rocket 34 36 44.
  • Sabrina — Ally during the Silph Co. rescue. She detects Gastly’s concealed presence and is surprised by its ability to speak 39 42 45.
  • Ash’s Haunter — A separate Pokémon encountered at the Saffron Gym. The two bond immediately through playful face-making 39.

Notable Quotes

“Actually, this is just Hypnosis. But my Hypnosis no longer needs to put anyone to sleep to affect the real world!” 36

“I mean that you've earned my approval. Now, take out your Poké Ball. I'm willing to become your Pokémon and help you achieve your dream!” 36

Trivia

  • Gastly is a central figure in Xia You’s Maiden Rock story, which Yoshino Cerise begins adapting into a manga. Xia You describes it as “actually the protagonist” in one sense 37 38.
  • Although exceptionally strong for its species, Gastly admits that it would have little chance against Zapdos 35.
