Background / History

Team Magma Operations

Courtney worked as a scientist before becoming captain of Team Magma’s Action Team. At Meteor Falls, she deployed Camerupt against Xia You’s Raikou while Team Magma and Team Aqua were holding Professor Cozmo. After Xia You and Misty freed the professor, she pursued them through the caves 615.

She subsequently organized an encirclement, requested reinforcements, and stationed a squad to guard against Team Aqua. Xia You’s group proved stronger than expected, and Shelly’s arrival left Courtney caught between opposing forces. She withdrew after the operation failed 616 617.

During the struggle over Deoxys, Courtney deliberately targeted Xia You, identifying powerful interfering Trainers as a greater obstacle to Team Magma’s ambitions than the difficulty of finding Groudon. Zinnia intervened to protect him. Courtney later withdrew when the Legendary Birds returned, then redirected her forces against Team Aqua to prevent her rivals from capturing Deoxys 670 671 672.

At Mt. Pyre, she accompanied Maxie and Tabitha in the attempt to seize the Red Orb. Recognizing Xia You among the shrine’s defenders, she immediately warned Maxie that their situation had become dangerous 704.

Abandonment and Rescue

At Team Magma’s underground harbor, Maxie ordered Courtney to remain behind and delay Xia You, giving her a self-destruct controller. She understood that he was abandoning her but accepted the assignment, blaming herself for the organization’s repeated failures 708 709.

Courtney intended to kill herself and Xia You in the explosion. His reminder that other Team Magma members and their Pokémon remained in the base briefly shook her resolve, but she ultimately activated the device. The resulting explosions destroyed the underground harbor rather than the entire base 709.

Xia You pulled her beneath Deoxys’s protection and escaped through the water with Milotic. Unable to swim, Courtney nearly drowned; Deoxys carried them to a clifftop, where Xia You revived her. His decision to save her despite her attempt on his life challenged her loyalty to Maxie 709 710.

Defection During the Groudon Crisis

Courtney experienced repeated visions of Groudon attacking Maxie and Team Magma. After Shelly explained that Primal Reversion would bring destruction rather than the better world their organizations envisioned, Courtney supplied Maxie’s coordinates and guided Xia You there on Dragonite. She initially insisted on seeing the truth for herself 708 710.

Her warning preceded Groudon’s Hyper Beam attack, which killed Team Magma members behind Maxie and Tabitha. Xia You then appeared with her, presenting her as his prisoner while Gengar stole the Red Orb 712.

During the ensuing conflict, Camerupt protected Courtney from bombardment. Maxie and Tabitha later took her hostage and demanded the Red Orb in exchange for her life. Following this treatment, she fully committed herself to Xia You’s side and fought Team Aqua alongside him and Shelly 714 716 718.

Courtney subsequently helped monitor Team Magma, captured Tabitha when he attempted to escape by speedboat, and assisted people stranded in the sea as the island broke apart. She delivered Tabitha into custody and received special amnesty from the International Police as an informant 718 741 744.

Special Operations Team

In Kanto, Courtney and Shelly established guarded warehouse bases near the Biker Gang’s bar. Courtney offered to accompany Xia You to Sinnoh, anticipating that he would clash with another criminal organization there. Xia You instead tasked both women with building a mobile Special Operations Team of fewer than ten members, appointing Shelly as captain 797.

Their work expanded into reconnaissance and joint operations with the International Police. Courtney also became Xia You’s lover, while continuing to address him as “Boss” 1003 1004 1095.

Operations Against Team Galactic

Courtney and Shelly scouted Team Galactic’s Veilstone Building and joined Looker’s raid against Mars and her elite members. Their combined assault helped drive the defenders back, although Mars escaped from the rooftop 1003 1009.

The pair later investigated Mt. Coronet in hiking disguises. Their search uncovered a platform among the summit ruins but little additional information. During Xia You’s visit, he revealed that he had captured Dialga 1095.

In Celestic Town, Courtney confronted Cynthia after hearing her criticize Xia You. Shelly joined her, and the two battled the Champion in the street. The gathering crowd forced an end to the fight before either side won. Cynthia subsequently sought information about their whereabouts 1106 1107 1108 1109 1129.

Courtney and Shelly also infiltrated the Dororo Steel Factory, helping expose Team Galactic’s occupation and the captivity of its owner, Mr. Dodoro. Later, Xia You sent them ahead to Mt. Coronet during the approach to Spear Pillar. Courtney joined the party escorting Cyrus and other prisoners downhill, but Necrozma intercepted them and escaped with Cyrus 1138 1165 1173.

Unova and the Capture of *Tide*

In Unova, Courtney and Shelly investigated attacks and unusual activity near a mountain observatory, suspecting a nearby Team Plasma base 1306.

Xia You later assigned them to seize Team Plasma’s ship in Driftveil City, providing its layout and sending Gengar as support. Accel☆Warrior repeatedly intercepted them on the way to the harbor. Aboard the ship, Courtney commanded their Pokémon and protected Shelly while she took control of its systems 1337 1340.

After the capture, Courtney searched the ship with Gengar and discovered Linda. She threatened to kill Linda to prevent her from revealing the operation, also invoking jealousy over how Xia You might react to Linda’s appearance. Shelly instead decided to hold Linda until Xia You could determine her fate 1341 1342.

By Xia You’s inspection, the women had remodeled the ship, removed Team Plasma’s backdoors, and learned its systems and weapons. Courtney proposed the name Blaze Queen, but Xia You selected Shelly’s suggestion, Tide 1403.

Under Maxie, her loyalty became self-destructive: she accepted responsibility for multiple failed operations and regarded a suicidal attempt to stop Xia You as her chance to make amends. Concern for her teammates nevertheless interrupted that resolve when she realized the explosion could kill them as well 708 709.

Her rescue redirected much of that devotion toward Xia You. She became openly affectionate, highly receptive to his praise, and increasingly inclined to believe him. Her scientific background and operational competence remain intact, but her reactions to his achievements are often emotional and admiring rather than analytical 718 744 927 1096.

She is intensely possessive and especially competitive with Shelly. Courtney deliberately provokes her rival through displays of affection toward Xia You, yet the two can cooperate effectively in combat and covert work 1007 1009 1340.

Her reform does not eliminate her recklessness or cruelty. When defending Xia You from criticism, she challenges Cynthia without regard for the difference in their standing and initially ignores attempts to stop their public battle. Her later threats against Linda show that secrecy and jealousy can still bring out a ruthless side 1106 1107 1108 1341.
