Xia You arrived in Vermilion City after winning his seventh consecutive battle aboard the ship and registered for the Indigo League. He received a Badge Case and learned he would need to visit a laboratory to add Kanto information to his Pokédex.

• Xia You's Ralts defeated a middle-aged man's Rattata, earning its seventh straight victory.
• Xia You disembarked in Vermilion City with Ralts and headed to the Pokémon Center to register for the Indigo League.
• Nurse Joy registered Xia You from Vaniville Town in the Kalos Region and gave him an Indigo League Badge Case.
• Nurse Joy told Xia You that Cerise Laboratory or Professor Oak's Laboratory could expand his Pokédex to include Kanto.

Xia You visited Cerise Laboratory in Vermilion City and asked Professor Cerise to upgrade his Pokédex for use across all regions. After the upgrade, he said he planned to catch Kanto’s three starter Pokémon before challenging Gyms.

• Xia You met Chloe Cerise outside Cerise Laboratory, and she brought him inside to meet her father.
• Professor Cerise’s Yamper approached Xia You’s Ralts, then backed away when Ralts’s hands began to glow.
• Xia You asked Professor Cerise to upgrade his Kalos Pokédex, and Professor Cerise completed the upgrade in the laboratory.
• Xia You met the assistants Chrysa and Ren and told them he planned to catch Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur.

Xia You learned that the Garden of Mystery might lie north of Vermilion City and set out with Ralts to find it. After reaching the hidden Bulbasaur habitat, he approached a lone Bulbasaur and began a confrontation.

• Professor Cerise told Xia You that wild Bulbasaur had been seen deep in the forest north of Vermilion City and explained the Garden of Mystery legend.
• Xia You said goodbye to Chloe and Yamper, then bought camping and travel supplies in Vermilion City.
• Xia You and Ralts crossed into a dense forest, where his phone lost its signal and Ralts used Confusion to clear their way through the undergrowth.
• After hearing Pokémon cries, Xia You and Ralts broke through a thorny wall of vines and found a basin filled with Bulbasaur around a huge dead tree.
• Xia You watched the Bulbasaur with binoculars, then approached one that had wandered away to pick Berries.
• The Bulbasaur took a battle stance and lashed out with Vine Whip when Xia You and Ralts confronted it.

Xia You caught a Bulbasaur in the Garden of Mystery and brought it back to Vermilion City, where it began settling in with his other Pokémon. After Professor Cerise praised Xia You's care for Pokémon and research instincts, he invited Xia You to become a Special Researcher at the laboratory.

• Xia You used Ralts to defeat and catch a Bulbasaur in the Garden of Mystery, then photographed the secluded habitat before leaving.
• Xia You welcomed the wary Bulbasaur into his family over a camp meal, and it lowered its guard to eat.

• Xia You told Chloe he planned to strengthen his team and eventually challenge the Indigo League, beginning with the Cerulean and Pewter Gyms.
• Goh joined Chloe and Xia You, revealed that he wanted to collect every Pokémon, and became interested in Xia You's Ralts.

Xia You caught Eevee after Bulbasaur defeated it, then reached Cerulean City and watched the three beauties’ water ballet before asking Sakura for a Gym battle. Sakura recognized that he had come to challenge the Gym, leaving the match yet to begin.

• Bulbasaur wore down Eevee, defeated it in a collision, and then knocked it out with Vine Whip, allowing Xia You to catch it as his third Pokémon.
• After two days of travel, Xia You arrived in Cerulean City and saw a wanted poster identifying Jessie and James as Pokémon thieves.
• Xia You learned that Sakura, Ayame, and Penny held the Cerulean Gym while Misty was not yet its Leader, and he waited for their water ballet to end.
• Xia You watched the three beauties perform their water ballet before heading to the aquarium to find them.
• After mistaking Xia You for a reporter or autograph seeker, Sakura realized he had come to challenge the Gym, and he confirmed it.

Xia You used the floating platforms to defeat Penny’s Goldeen with Eevee in the Cerulean Gym battle. Ayame then sent out Krabby, and Xia You chose Bulbasaur to face it.

• Sakura explained that Xia You had to defeat all three sisters, each using one Pokémon, to pass the Gym challenge.
• Penny challenged Xia You with Goldeen, which used its speed and the water to pressure Eevee.
• Xia You had Eevee tip a floating platform, trapping Goldeen’s horn and leaving it stuck above the water.
• Eevee recovered from Goldeen’s Supersonic and knocked it out with Tackle, giving Xia You the first victory.
• Ayame sent out Krabby, and Xia You recalled Eevee and chose Bulbasaur for the next battle.

Xia You defeated Ayame’s Krabby with Bulbasaur, then began his final battle against Sakura’s Seel using Ralts. Sakura’s Icy Wind froze the pool and slowed Ralts, leaving the battle unresolved.

• Ayame had Krabby climb onto Bulbasaur’s platform, where the Pokémon traded attacks until Bulbasaur freed itself from Vice Grip and bound Krabby with Leech Seed.
• Xia You ordered Bulbasaur to finish Krabby with Vine Whip, winning his second consecutive battle and leaving only Sakura to face.
• Sakura sent out Seel, and Xia You recalled Bulbasaur before choosing his final Pokémon, Ralts.
• Ralts dodged Seel’s Aqua Jet with Teleport, but Sakura’s Icy Wind froze the water and slowed Ralts despite its escape.

Xia You defeated Sakura, Ayame, and Penny at the Cerulean Gym, earning the Cascade Badge as Ralts evolved into Kirlia. After he left, Misty decided to begin her own journey to become a great Trainer.

• Ralts copied Seel's Thick Fat Ability, resisted Ice Shard, and used Magical Leaf to injure Seel.
• Ralts trapped Seel with Confusion and slammed it onto the ice, leaving it unable to battle and giving Xia You the victory.
• Ralts evolved into Kirlia, which shyly bonded with Xia You as Sakura awarded him the Cascade Badge.
• Misty arrived after Xia You had left and, after hearing about the Gym battle, vowed to set off on a journey the day after tomorrow.

Xia You traveled to Blastoise Island and caught a Squirtle after battling it with Bulbasaur. After evading the island’s approaching Blastoise and returning to Cerulean City, he set off for Pewter City, where a green-haired Trainer stopped him with a challenge.

• Xia You reached Blastoise Island by fishing boat and found a group of Squirtle and Wartortle living there.
• Xia You challenged a curious Squirtle and had Bulbasaur defeat it by trapping it with Vine Whip and slamming it against the ground.
• Xia You caught the unconscious Squirtle, then heard a powerful roar and felt the ground shake as the island’s Blastoise approached.
• Xia You hid from Blastoise until the fishing boat returned, then spent the night recovering at a Pokémon Center in Cerulean City.
• Xia You sent Professor Cerise photographs of the island and headed toward Pewter City with his four Pokémon.
• A green-haired man stopped Xia You near the edge of Cerulean City and asked him to accept a challenge.

Xia You accepted Xiaoming’s challenge at his wilderness Personal Gym, where the boastful trainer aimed for his hundredth consecutive victory. Their battle began with Xia You’s Kirlia facing Xiaoming’s well-trained Sandshrew, and neither Pokémon had gained a decisive advantage yet.

• Xiaoming challenged Xia You to a one-on-one battle at his Personal Gym outside Cerulean City.
• Xiaoming explained that he had won 92 battles in a row and wanted to reach 100 before traveling to challenge Gyms.
• Xiaoming sent out Sandshrew, and Xia You chose Kirlia after checking Sandshrew’s Pokédex entry.
• Sandshrew’s Rollout missed Kirlia’s Double Team, and Kirlia used Confusion to lift and slam Sandshrew.
• Sandshrew quickly used Defense Curl to withstand Confusion, and Xia You recognized its strength and close coordination with Xiaoming.

Xia You defeated A.J.'s Sandshrew after Kirlia evaded Fissure, then accepted a commission from Professor Cerise to deliver a prototype instrument to Professor Oak's Laboratory. On his way to Pallet Town, he stopped in Viridian City and agreed to carry a shop parcel for Professor Oak as well.

• Kirlia dodged Sandshrew's Fissure with repeated Teleports and defeated it with Magical Leaf.
• A.J. accepted his loss, vowed to rebuild his winning streak, and promised to challenge Xia You again.
• Professor Cerise asked Xia You to deliver a secret prototype instrument to Professor Oak's Laboratory, and Xia You agreed.
• Xia You traveled to Viridian City, where he told Chloe he was heading to Professor Oak's Laboratory.
• A shop clerk asked Xia You to take a parcel ordered by Professor Oak to Pallet Town, and Xia You agreed.

Xia You delivered Professor Cerise’s Prototype and a parcel of Poké Balls to Professor Oak, then continued toward Pewter City through Viridian Forest. After defeating a young samurai’s Pokémon, Xia You provoked him into challenging Pallet Town’s rookie Trainers.

• Xia You delivered the Prototype and the parcel of Poké Balls to Professor Oak, who said Gary would begin his journey the next day.
• Xia You entered Viridian Forest, battled several wild Pokémon, and chose not to catch a Pidgeotto or Butterfree.
• A young samurai challenged Xia You and sent out Pinsir, which Squirtle quickly defeated.
• The young samurai sent out Caterpie, and Squirtle defeated it without being switched out.
• Xia You told the young samurai that Pallet Town’s rookie Trainers were strong, prompting him to vow to defeat them.

After two days searching a volcano near Pewter City, Xia You lured a Charmander away from its group and captured it with help from his Pokémon. At the Pewter City Pokémon Center, he celebrated collecting all three Kanto starter Pokémon while the bewildered Charmander began adjusting to its new trainer and companions.

• Xia You searched the volcano for Charmander, and Eevee eventually led him to a group of Charmander, Charmeleon, and Charizard.
• Xia You devised a plan to lure one Charmander away using a modified flashlight and food, then had his Pokémon hide nearby.
• Xia You picked a careless Charmander and drew it away from the group with the flashlight beam.
• Xia You's Pokémon ambushed the Charmander and knocked it unconscious, allowing Xia You to capture it immediately.
• Xia You celebrated at the Pewter City Pokémon Center, where the newly caught Charmander looked confused as Xia You urged it to eat.

Xia You met Ash and Misty at the Pewter Pokémon Center, and the three went to challenge Brock at the Pewter Gym. Ash began the first battle against Brock with Pikachu facing Onix.

• Xia You recognized Ash and Pikachu arguing with Misty about the Pokémon League and introduced himself.
• Misty recognized Xia You as the Trainer whose Kirlia had beaten her sister, while Brock’s father mocked Ash’s plan to challenge the Gym.
• Xia You agreed to travel with Ash and Misty to the Pewter Gym, where Brock limited each challenger to two Pokémon.
• Ash claimed the first turn, and Brock sent out Onix to face Ash’s Pikachu.

Ash’s Pikachu lost to Brock’s Onix, and Xia You stepped in to battle Brock with Bulbasaur against Geodude. Bulbasaur struck Geodude with Razor Leaf and endured the fragments of Brock’s Rock Throw.

• Ash sent Pikachu against Brock’s Onix, but Pikachu panicked, was trapped by Bind, and could not hurt Onix with Thunder Shock.
• Ash conceded the match, then Xia You praised him and said he believed Ash could become a Pokémon Master with enough training.
• Brock sent out Geodude, and Xia You chose Bulbasaur to fight it.
• Bulbasaur hit Geodude with Razor Leaf before it could approach, and Brock answered with Rock Throw.
• Bulbasaur used Razor Leaf to shatter most of the rocks, but fragments struck it as it stood its ground.

Xia You defeated Brock’s Geodude and Onix to earn the Boulder Badge. Ash ran off after watching the battle, while Xia You and Misty left him to recover and expected him to return to challenge the Gym.

• Bulbasaur defeated Brock’s Geodude with Razor Leaf after catching it with Vine Whip.
• Xia You sent out Squirtle against Onix, and Squirtle used Withdraw to withstand Rock Tomb before Rapid Spin broke Onix’s Bind.
• Squirtle struck Onix with Water Gun, then countered its Dig ambush with Bubble and defeated it with another Water Gun.
• Brock admitted defeat and awarded Xia You the Boulder Badge, his second Indigo League badge.
• Xia You discovered Ash had run off, and Misty said she did not know where he had gone.

Xia You spent time with Misty in Pewter City before deciding to leave for the next Gym, while Ash prepared to challenge Brock again. Back at the Cerise Laboratory, Professor Cerise offered Xia You a room and a place for his Pokémon in the newly completed Cerise Park.

• Xia You and Misty visited the Pewter Science Museum and shared a meal, where Misty explained her goal of becoming a Water-type Pokémon Master and her reason for following Ash.
• Xia You predicted Ash would return to challenge Brock, and the next morning Ash told Xia You and Misty about his special charging training with Pikachu.
• Xia You told Ash and Misty he was leaving for the next city with a Gym because they were rivals pursuing the Indigo Conference.
• Xia You returned to Vermilion City and visited Professor Cerise, who praised him for delivering the Prototype.
• Chloe met Xia You's Pokémon and admired Kirlia, while Professor Cerise showed Xia You the room he had arranged and the completed Cerise Park.

Xia You visited the newly completed Cerise Park with Chloe before taking her to challenge Lt. Surge for the Thunder Badge at the Vermilion Gym. Kirlia began battling Surge’s Raichu, and its Magical Leaf broke through Raichu’s Thunder Shock and struck it.

• Xia You and Chloe toured Cerise Park while their Pokémon played, and Chloe explained that Professor Cerise had invited Xia You to inspect the newly completed park.
• Xia You invited Chloe to watch him challenge the Vermilion Gym, and she agreed to come along.
• At the gym, Lt. Surge set a challenge requiring Xia You to defeat two Pokémon and sent out Raichu as his first opponent.
• Xia You chose Kirlia to battle Raichu, while Lt. Surge mocked his choice and ordered Raichu to use Mega Punch.
• Xia You ordered Magical Leaf, and Kirlia’s leaves pierced Raichu’s Thunder Shock and struck it.

Xia You defeated Lt. Surge’s Raichu with Kirlia and began the second round of the Vermilion Gym challenge with Bulbasaur against Electabuzz. The battle was still underway, with Electabuzz landing a Thunder Punch on Bulbasaur.

• Kirlia struck Raichu with Magical Leaf, avoided its Thunderbolt using Teleport, and knocked it down with Confusion.
• Xia You remembered Raichu’s lack of speed moves and used Confusion to stop its Body Slam and fling it to the ground.
• The referee declared Raichu unable to battle, and Lt. Surge sent out Electabuzz for the second round.
• Xia You switched to Bulbasaur, whose Razor Leaf canceled out Electabuzz’s Shock Wave.
• Bulbasaur struck Electabuzz with Vine Whip, but Electabuzz pushed through and hit it with Thunder Punch.

Xia You defeated Lt. Surge at the Vermilion Gym, earned the Orange Badge, and received a Thunder Stone as a gift. After Professor Cerise asked him to investigate the nearby power plant, Xia You offered Eevee a choice of evolution, and Eevee touched the Thunder Stone as electricity flared around it.

• Bulbasaur put Electabuzz to sleep with Sleep Powder, then defeated it with Razor Leaf and evolved into Ivysaur.
• Lt. Surge gave Xia You the Orange Badge and a Thunder Stone, which Kirlia caught with Confusion before Xia You accepted it.
• Xia You and Chloe returned to the Cerise Laboratory, where Professor Cerise asked Xia You to investigate unstable power at the nearby Unmanned Power Plant.
• Xia You discussed Eevee's possible evolution and offered it the Thunder Stone; Eevee touched it, and electricity flashed through the dormitory.

After Jolton evolved, Xia You went to an abandoned power plant near Vermilion City and discovered Zapdos feeding on electricity. He ordered his Pokémon to attack the Legendary Pokémon, beginning a battle to capture it.

• Jolteon evolved, and Xia You praised its new form.
• Xia You entered the old power plant with his Pokémon to investigate it.
• Xia You heard a cry and followed it to the main power room, where Zapdos was drawing electricity from the generators.
• Xia You decided to capture Zapdos and ordered Kirlia, Ivysaur, Jolteon, Squirtle, and Charmander to attack together.
• Zapdos unleashed an electric wave, and Xia You began the battle by calling out moves for his Pokémon.

Xia You and his Pokémon battled Zapdos in the power plant, enduring its devastating attacks until Jolteon’s Volt Absorb helped turn the fight around. Xia You finally caught Zapdos, leaving him stunned as the Poké Ball clicked shut.

• Zapdos broke free of Kirlia’s psychic grip and attacked Ivysaur, but Charmander’s Smokescreen helped the Pokémon evade its Drill Peck.
• Xia You’s Pokémon pinned Zapdos down and attacked together, but Zapdos summoned a thunderstorm and unleashed powerful moves that damaged the power plant and battered the team.
• Jolteon absorbed Zapdos’s Thunder with its Volt Absorb Ability, allowing Kirlia and Ivysaur to restrain Zapdos while the others struck it.
• Xia You’s first Poké Ball failed to hold Zapdos, and Zapdos knocked down all of his Pokémon except Jolteon with another Thunderbolt.
• Jolteon used Quick Attack to defeat the weakened Zapdos, and Xia You caught it with a second Poké Ball.

Xia You secretly caught Zapdos, persuaded Professor Cerise to increase his Poké Ball limit, and trained his Pokémon against Zapdos. After setting out from the laboratory, he reunited with Ash, Misty, and Brock in Vermilion City.

• Xia You returned to the Cerise Laboratory and told Professor Cerise that he had caught Zapdos, asking him to keep it secret.
• Professor Cerise updated Xia You’s Pokédex permissions, increasing his carrying limit from six Pokémon to twelve.
• Xia You released Zapdos at Cerise Park and ordered his Pokémon to attack it as a sparring partner.
• After a day’s rest, Xia You left the laboratory and ran into Ash, Misty, and Brock.
• Ash showed Xia You his three badges, while Misty and Brock explained that they had gone easy on him in battle.
