"As far as basic compatibility went, anyone could have done well. Among them, I chose the Pokémon whose type I understood relatively well."
"Understood?"
"In terms of typing, Hagana is Steel/Ground. Thanks to Zweilous, I'm used to dealing with Ground types, but that's only Zweilous. My understanding is still shallow. Scizor has Bug typing as well, and as I am now, I don't understand it well enough to bring out his best in battle. But Kirimoyama is an Evil-type. Thanks to Little Black, I'm more familiar with Evil types, so I thought he'd be the best one to battle out of the three."
All three Pokémon seemed likely to work well with Kaim. But the fact that any of them could do well also meant that he could not base his decision on that alone.
So Kaim decided to choose a Pokémon with a type he knew well. He was more familiar with the Fighting typing of Blaziken and Lucario, the Steel typing shared by Lucario and Metagross, and the Evil typing of his partner and ace, Little Black.
Kirimoyama had a familiar type among the candidates. Kaim thought that, with his understanding of Evil types, he might be able to handle Bisharp well, so he decided to choose Bisharp.
"That's fine. As long as you've thought it through, there's no problem."
"It affects the Pokémon's life, too. He's not just a Bisharp; he's also my Pokémon."
"That sounds like you. It's a good thing."
"Yeah."
"So, as a Gym Trainer, do you want to battle with Lucario, Metagross, and Chillachile?"
"I don't think so. Depending on the opponent, Lucario might not even get a turn."
Lucario was Kaim's longest-serving Pokémon after Kuroki and Blaziken. He had also joined after Kaim became Cynthia's apprentice, so he had received considerable training.
